I bought a 2 TB #Samsung portable #SSD last year for ~ 240€. Its current retail price, is quite literally double that. Almost 500€. Absolutely batshit insane.
There is no #inflation that makes prices double in a year. It's just the #datacenter apocalypse and the infinite #LLM circlejerk of the Big Seven.

This is where the data center in Trinidad is allocated, but is not necessarily the data center.
Given a drought watch in Trinidad for September, and lack of announcement, I suspect it is not the ai data center. I do understand the NIMBY. Maybe this weekend I will drive down and take a look.
More transparency would alleviate concerns.

The world’s first 1PB SSD could become a reality sooner than many people expect.
Kioxia and Sandisk have demonstrated next-generation QLC NAND with 2Tb per die and extremely high areal density. With enough NAND dies, the technology could theoretically enable a single SSD with around 1PB of capacity.
But reaching 1PB isn’t simply a matter of adding more flash. Packaging, controller design, power consumption, thermals, endurance, and data reliability all become much harder at this scale. A massive SSD also creates challenging failure and rebuild scenarios.
Still, the direction is clear: NAND density continues to rise, while AI and data-center workloads are creating demand for ever-larger local storage.
The 1PB SSD may sound crazy today—but the underlying NAND technology is already moving in that direction.

Do AI agents really need one CPU per GPU?
AMD has suggested that the rise of AI agents could push data-center CPU-to-GPU ratios toward 1:1. But is that actually supported by the evidence?
The answer is more complicated.Real-world studies show that AI agents can generate significant CPU workloads. In one production trace, code execution and tool calls took as long as or longer than model inference in more than 27% of requests. Database search can also dominate latency.
But that doesn’t prove a 1:1 CPU-to-GPU ratio. Existing studies measured individual configurations—not how many CPUs are actually needed per GPU. In fact, the workloads are highly variable, making a single ratio a poor sizing metric.
The bigger trend is clear: AI infrastructure is adding a dedicated CPU/orchestration tier for code execution, tool calls, databases and sandboxes.
The real question may not be CPU vs. GPU count, but how much CPU compute, memory and power each AI workload actually needs.

Kioxia and Sandisk’s latest QLC NAND reaches 2Tb per die and 37.6 Gb/mm² density, making a roughly 1PB SSD technically achievable with about 4,096 dies.
But the NAND is only part of the challenge. Packaging, controllers, thermals, endurance, cost—and especially the huge failure/rebuild domain—still need to be solved.

AI agents can create significant CPU workloads through code execution, tool calls, database searches, and orchestration. But that doesn’t necessarily mean data centers need a 1:1 CPU-to-GPU ratio.
The key issue is workload variability. Instead of counting CPUs versus GPUs, infrastructure may need to be sized around actual CPU compute, memory, and latency requirements.

J'ai fait un constat assez frappant en analysant les IP des instances du Fédiverse : la décentralisation logicielle masque une énorme centralisation des infrastructures. Je n'avais jamais vu autant de domaines pointer sur les mêmes IP* !
J'ai pris la liste des instances, résolu leurs DNS et récupéré les ASN correspondants.
Rien que sur cet échantillon : Automattic, Cloudflare, Fastly, OVH, Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Rackspace, netcup, etc.
Une instance peut être française, son admin français, son domaine en .fr… mais son infrastructure repose sur les mêmes géants du cloud. Pour l'autonomie et la souveraineté numérique du Fédiverse, il y a encore un sacré chemin à faire !
* J'exclue les IP qui servent à masquer les IP réelles bien sûr.
