A 250 meter high mountain of salt dominating this nice valley. Back when Germany was divided, West Germany decided that is was just fine to make a huge pile of NaCl right where the border made a small “peninsula” into east.
The salt is a residual product from potassium Produktion. 2,9 mio tons a year is deposited.

Tomorrow we leave the lowlands, fields, marshes and flat horizons. Tomorrow we walk into Harz and over Brocken mountain top at 1100 m. From now on at the next long time it will be up and down each day.

We stumbled upon Marienborn memorial to divided Germany. I highly recommend the exhibition. Is it understated but got under my skin. Huge and desolate but reeks of efficiency in control.

Today have been a big birds day. We saw red kites constantly, but also an eagle (most likely a white tail see eagle), many cranes, 3 storks.
We have followed the river Elbe for two days now and are not tired of walking on top of dikes. The water level is rather high, but I think that is normal for spring. We don’t see the old border much, but then we come across remnants kept for history.

Today have been a nature day. We saw signs of wild boar, a beaver including a beaver dam, and a pack of red kites. You can almost see them in the picture. iPhone is not good for nature photography 😀

Our fist encounter with the old border between east and west. Almost as if we had planes it, we came by the border museum “Grenzen museum”, and then we step foot on the old patrol road.
