  1. Saw there are commits to make running on . That‘s one of the greatest Open Source apps for sure. Have to check whether they already succeeded.

  3. @gperson Yes we do! It's very cool indeed 😎️

Though it's very experimental, also the lack of darling releases for a lot of years, and for the very long time the latest ones having serious bugs making them unusable, our build system is painfully designed around the limitations of those old builds. But at least, once everything is figured out and scripted, things work reliably! 🙂️

I've heard that #Darling released a new version last month, we will likely evaluate it. 😉️

Next version of Unvanquished which should come in some days will still be built using the old Darling because of all the possible pain from working around limitations we don't know yet. 😄️

But yes, it starts being usable for the one not afraid and with enough endurance and problem-solving skill, and it should become easier and easier in the future. Go Darling Go! 🚀️
  4. Just love how @curioustommy keeps working on . If some day I could run 3 on my Linux machines I‘d give a party where eveyone had to show up wearing a turtleneck sweater and we‘d eat carrots all the time.

  9. @jonmsterling @wmlive @sgharms Well, it ends up being nostalgia software for NextStep/OpenStep fans and people who like approaches like Nextspace.

  10. @david_chisnall I think there are great projects like that were well worth to contribute to. But eventually to me it‘s this: still is fun, but its time is over, looking at activities on GitHub the ecosystem declines.

  16. @[email protected] I recommend you consider #AsahiLinux. It is specifically designed for #Apple hardware.#Darling is coming along quite well and is able to run your #macOS software.

  17. @curioustommy You‘ve done amazing work with . But for real world usage you need UI toolkits. And I think it‘s obvious having UIKit and AppKit is too much for any project out there. So having AppKit and being able to start my old apps from would just be phantastic.

  18. The situation with how Nintendo is handling the Nintendo Switch emulators (Ryujinx & Yuzu) makes me think about our plans to support non-macOS platforms on Darling in the very distant future.

The thing that sucks about non-macOS platforms is that Apple requires all apps released in the App Store to be encrypted with their Fair Play junk...

While I don't see Apple being as aggressive as Nintendo, when it comes to their legacy software/ecosystem. I worried that Apple may be compelled to pull a Nintendo if Darling's (hypothetical) iPadOS implementation becomes good enough to handle a decent handful of modern apps.

One advantage TouchHLE has over Darling is that the emulator only supports 32bit iOS apps. Darling, on the other hand, is intended to support modern apps (which Apple may find as a threat).

I'm tempted to convince our group to drop the idea of supporting non-macOS platforms on Darling...

  19. @bugaevc Btw, installed , which was very smooth and easy. Integration into the Linux shell is impressive, almost feels like working on a . I tried to execute a couple of apps, but even the oldest and simplest failed. So that looks like a lot of work. 😉🫣

But thank you for that impressive work done so far. 👍💚

  20. With some unmerged hacks/workarounds, I managed to get Darling to successfully execute an arm64 macOS executable on Linux!

More work needs to be done though before this can be merged into the master/main branch.
