Starship combat with #Manticore is also much more difficult than #ExtremeMode

Imagine, if you will, the total insanity of taking on a large incoming #Watchtower fleet with Manticore. I just splashed 26 ships in a mindbending 3D dogfight, with the hostiles using that extra dimension almost as well as I do, while being a lot tougher. I had to stay ahead of their fire and shake off missile lock immediately, looping in and through and around them to keep out of the crossfire, because (as I learned very early in trying Manticore) once shields are broken the ship is trashed after 1–3 hits.

It’s asymmetric warfare all the way, without any clear advantage to exploit but your own wits during daredevil maneuvers. You can’t adopt a brute force approach, because you can only have a max of 9 fleet ships so Watchtower will always have you outnumbered; since the Vanilla game only allows you to own 10 ships at a time, that’s where the mod caps it too (even with mods like #Darkstar installed that increase your owned fleet capacity IIRC).

I found this lovely little island just off the arctic coast on Bel II, just large enough for an outpost beacon and a Darkstar Omen LX200 X Ultra platform, a far enough swim to ensure the death of any mortal, and pose a serious health risk to Starborn

I stormed The Key, saved Shinya Voss, and talked down Delgado without killing a single Crimson Fleet pirate along the way. Arrested them all.

Well, except Mathias. For some strange reason the #NonLethalFramework mod didn’t allow me to handcuff him. So I just let him disappear into the aether like a Starborn at the end of the quest. It’s canonical-adjacent.

I happened to notice that #Watchtower fleets use an interesting but peculiar difficulty-scaling algorithm—the individual ships scale by level as normal, but the size of the fleets seem to keep growing as well. I haven’t quite mapped out the curve in my head but it seems to be polynomial.

In any case. It took me nearly 45 minutes last night just to loot all the damn ships from a large response fleet in orbit of Ka’Zaal.

PS: currently playing on #Darkstar #PunishMe difficulty, which compared to #Scarfield is disappointingly easy, however, works on both #PC and #Xbox which is not nothing
