Part of the appeal of authoritarianism is its simplicity - the promise that one strong leader can cut through complexity and solve every problem. Democracy's messiness, frustrating incrementalism, and constant compromise are features, not bugs, but they make for a hard sell, even if the alternative is worse.

Weirdly, this reminds me of something I wrote about Darkseid's search for the Anti-Life Equation, which he deploys in Final Crisis:
The Anti-Life Equation is so terrifying because it’s not just mind control, it compels the surrender of free will. Those who have submitted spout slogans about how it justifies anything, how it’s so much easier than the struggles of life and love. It’s insidious, because psychological research has shown that decisions do take effort, and it is easier to offload tough decisions to a schedule, a policy, a leader, etc. The brain likes taking shortcuts around cognitive load.
There’s an appeal to never having to worry about making the wrong choice.

Climate change means, from #Russia's POV, that they will have more land and resources to exploit(just look what it does for them re: the north pole) so why wouldn't its leader do everything they could to prevent other nations--who will be destroyed by it--from mitigating it? (said rivals also including China ) After all, that also knocks out a lot of competition.
