  1. On the Duplouich lens, the aperture diameter is in mm! I did some calcs and arrived at the following, based on a lens focal length of 145mm (measured):

    18 = f/8
    13 = f11
    9 = f/16
    6.5 = f/22

    Armed with this info, I loaded some Fomapan film to test. The good news is that it appears correct. The bad news is that the darkslide chewed the light seals, and only the first photo survived the light leaks. The photo printed on Fomatone paper:

  2. Solarization: Most digital photographers only know the effect as Photoshop filter, but here it's happening chemically in the darkroom... Created by extreme overexposure (here ~3x longer of my usual exposure time), the darkest parts of the image have become inverted, which in Kallitype then (temporarily) turns into these amazing orange tones, whilst the mids & highlights remain normal neutral grays, depending on developer used... During fixing and (especially) toning, the orange would then revert back into a more or less uniform dark brown and the effect disappears again, replaced by the classic overexposed look... Aesthetically though, the early & in-between stages are the most unique and interesting...

  7. Update, and third time's a charm... Smoother, sharper, better range and much less graininess. Actually can clearly make out the summit cross (maybe not in this phone pic and downsized JPG version)... 🤩

  12. The experiments, process adjustments and elimination of environmental factors shall continue until the desired results are obtained (and morale improves again... 😅)

    Also, Kallitype chemistry is a wondrous/finicky beast and reproduction requires strict discipline, cleanliness and detailed log keeping of pretty much any aspect... The main difference between these two prints is that the red one involved spraying/misting the paper with distilled water 15 mins prior to coating the emulsion... Almost looks like there was some contamination (i.e. tap water residue) in the spray head...

    The bottom one is very close to what I'm after in terms of tones and also shows that my overall process is now pretty reproducible (if I just stick to it!).

  17. Short 35 second video summary of a kallitype test print development from last night, showing the many different color changes a print undergoes before one can actually fully check the final result. With a trained eye, you can already make a determination quite early on, but in general each of the stages has potential to throw your expectations, sometimes tones even shift in the 24h-48h after initial drying...

    Btw. This print hasn't been fully cleared by purpose and the emulsion is still partially visible in the final print. I was saving time and here was only really after tweaking the overall tone & darks...

  18. Started creating browser-based calculators for quickly computing a bunch of recurring things in darkroom processing, so far:

    Scale amount by area:
    Given reference dimensions and amount, compute scaled amount needed for new target dimensions.
    Example: Compute drops of emulsion needed for a new print size

    Two-part solution ratio:
    For a total volume of a two-part solution with a A:B target mix ratio, compute how many units are needed of both A and B.
    Example: For N drops in total, compute how many drops are needed for A & B using a 1.2:1 target ratio

    Solution addition:
    Compute the amount of solution A (with given concentration) to add to another volume to achieve a certain target concentration (for solution A)
    Example: How many extra drops of a 25% contrast agent solution are needed to achieve a 5% solution with a certain base emulsion volume

    More calculators forthcoming... Feel free to ping me with any other useful formulas you'd like to have added...

  23. New UV lamp, new developer handling & my largest Kallitype print so far (~10x7 inch) — a shot of the iconic Oeschinensee cirque, surrounded by 3500+ meter mountains...

    The new light setup is ~10x slower than my other light box, but allows me to do much larger prints in the future. The developer is chemically still the same, but now heated to 40℃. The photo is originally from an old iPhone 6.

    The negative needs some more tweaking to increase contrast and maybe another minute or two of longer exposure...

    Really excited to be doing larger prints (next step is double size 11x15 inch), giving those fragile mountain landscapes much more presence in person and this old photo process emphasizing their timeless character...

  25. 🎞 Плівка, якої ще ніхто не бачив? Власноруч створена емульсія!

    https://youtu.be/F6Bg9MQVi4A

Fediverse — filmly.co.ua
    Де ми ділимося фото, обговорюємо камери, плівки й навіть темні кімнати — без алгоритмів і реклами.

    📩 Напиши в коментарях, що думаєш про плівку ручної роботи — чи хотів би спробувати?

    More prints from the darkroom. This time, a normal print/lith print comparison. Both on Fomatone fibre-based paper.

  27. Another print from my first lith printing session

    I used Moersch Easy Lith, parts A+B+D and Fomatone fibre paper. The top print is a normal print for comparison. The lith print turned out too yellow/red for my taste, so I toned it in Selenium toner. I'm quite pleased with my first attempt.
