Oh my, I just bought something from eBay for the first time in 15+ years — wish me luck! My last experience (selling a laptop then) was super stressful, when the buyer ended up being a fraudster and it took months to get the money...

This time I ordered a dry heat press for my silver gelatin prints, very similar (but larger) to what I had in my first darkroom 35-40 years ago... My current approach pressing fiber prints under 20kg of books takes far too long and isn't scalable (in time and also for larger print sizes), plus the resulting quality from the press will be better too! 🤩

New 10x8" silver gelatin print. This one took a lot of refining, back and forth and test strips to achieve the right balance between brightness, contrast (esp. in the brighter parts of the clouds) and smooth mid-tone transitions. So even though this is a contact print from a digital negative, this was the first time in ages (i.e. decades) that I used some physical dodging to soften the horizon and emphasize the haze in the distance a tiny bit more...

Two small new prints from this afternoon, this time not Kallitype but contact printing on silver chloride FB paper, developed with Adox MCC. The increase in depth and detail is just wonderful and the feel of the final results an instant throwback to my early darkroom adventures ~40 years ago... 😍

The pictures are of two of my favorite places in recent years. Larger prints will be available for purchase in September.

Making Of A Kallitype (Part 1)

I recorded and edited a short 8-10x timelapse recording of the first stages of my Kallitype development process. Starting with mixing the photo emulsion, brush coating the paper, contact printing (UV exposure), heating developer and then showing the first two stages of actual development & clearing. Final result shown at the end, a 15x11" framed print (also posted here recently)...

(Please let me know if you'd like to see more like this... Personally, I find it quite ASMR-capable, even at this high speed, but even more so at real time. The whole process is quite therapeutic in these times!)
