The estate agent had called it the long gallery, and the name had outlived everyone who gave it. Forty feet of cold light, portraits nobody had looked at in a decade, and at the end of it, the man who had bought all of it, standing with his hands behind his back.
"You wrote," he said, "that you wanted one thing back."
I had written three lines and rewritten them nine times. "My mother's letters. Eleven of them. They went with the furniture in the sale. They're worth nothing to anyone but me."
"Nothing in this house is worth nothing."
"Name your price," I said.
His mouth moved, almost a smile. "Would you pay it?"
"Try me."
"One evening," he said. "You'll dine with me, and you'll tell me the truth. Your father. The debts. All of it. And you'll let me listen."
"Why would you do this?"
"Because I have owned this house for a year," he said, "and you are the first person to ask it for anything human."
I should have said no. I took the letter instead, and counted the hours all the way home.
