Fantasy with Friends: Dark Academia
Briana and Krysta at Pages Unbound are hosting a fantasy discussion meme this year called Fantasy with Friends. Since fantasy is my favorite genre, I thought it would be fun to take part. This week, their question is:
Do you enjoy dark academia fantasy novels? What are some themes you enjoy seeing discussed in dark academia (ex. ethics in academia, corruption, classism, etc?) Do you think the genre does a good job exploring such themes in general, or are many books focused mainly on the aesthetics?
I am not a fan of academia of any sort in any genre. In theory, I like the idea of exploring school and magic, and I think there are a lot of possibilities there. But academia in fantasy, whether dark or otherwise, isn’t really my cup of tea.
There are older readers who enjoy reading about younger age groups and the things that impact them, like school and first romances. I am not really one of those readers. School was a long time ago now, and I don’t really feel the need to revisit it. Even the thought of going back to graduate school doesn’t interest me, and I’m the child who loved school. Maybe I loved school a little too much back then and burnt myself out…
But now I’m inching ever closer to my solidly middle age years. I have two school-aged kids, and now I feel stuck back in school. I volunteer in their schools when I can, I keep up with all of their school work, my younger one only likes to do her homework when I’m sitting with her, and my older one always tries to make me do his math with him (he’s almost a teen and has almost nailed down all the things I despise). I feel like I’m stuck in an endless loop of school. I don’t mind reading about school when I read to them, but for my own pleasure? No thanks!
All the trials and tribulations in any school setting does not appeal to me anymore. Dark academia has never appealed to me, though I believe I have read one or two over the years. Sometimes the story just sounds to interesting that I can overlook the dark academia. But I just can’t stomach the idea of young adults dealing with all that darkness and blood and death and whatever else dark academia throws at students. I’m a mother. I can’t stand the thought of willfully throwing my child into dangerous situations. Whenever I come across dark academia where the students are somewhere around 20 years old, I just can’t. The only thought that goes through my head is: what possessed this child’s guardian(s) to send them to this horrific school? I’m sorry, but I just can’t. Because while the protagonist always seems orphaned or similarly situated, I can’t believe every student at the school is in the same boat. My mother’s heart just wants to grab my kids and hold onto them and never send them back to school, but that would be a really bad idea in the real world.
So, no, I don’t enjoy dark academia. If a story is compelling enough, I might pick it up. Higher Magic by Courtney Floyd and An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson are literally the only academia titles coming to me right now, and I’m still questioning why I picked up the latter.

A handwritten 1890 library card refers to a term that doesn't exist in any historical record, but why is the 1924 ledger now turning damp to the touch?
If anyone can verify this independently, please do.
