  1. 天地之间,
    其猷橐龠与。
    虚而不屈,
    动而愈出。

    The space between heaven and earth -
    Is it not like a bellows?
    Though it is empty it does not collapse;
    When put into motion it sends forth all the more.

  2. 为学日益,
    为道者日损。
    损之或损,
    以至亡为也。
    亡为而亡不为。

    Those who [toil at] their studies increase day after day;
    Those who practice the Way, decrease day after day.
    They decrease and decrease,
    Until they reach the point where they do nothing at all.
    They do nothing, yet there is nothing left undone.

  27. A Book for Our Time, written in 400 BC (only $2 on sale 🤗)

    If you want to get away from our present world, check out Laozi’s ‘Dao De Jing’, “a compassionate soul in a world torn by hatred and ambition, dominated by those that yearned for apocalyptic confrontations and prized ideology over experience

    By speaking out against the cleverness of elites and the arrogance of the learned, Laozi upheld the wisdom of the concrete, the humble, the quotidian, the everyday individual dismissed by the great powers of the world.”

    "Throw away holiness and wisdom, and people will be a hundred times happier. Throw away morality and justice, and people will do the right thing. Throw away industry and profit, and there won’t be any thieves. If these three aren’t enough, just stay at the center of the circle and let all things take their course."

    “When the great Tao is forgotten, goodness and piety appear. When the body’s intelligence declines, cleverness and knowledge step forth. When there is no peace in the family, filial piety begins. When the country falls into chaos, patriotism is born.”

    The #dao encourages me not to abandon, but to "disentangle" myself from the material world & return frequently inward.

    "We join spokes together in a wheel, but it is the center hole that makes the wagon move. We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want. We hammer wood for a house, but it is the inner space that makes it livable. We work with being, but non-being is what we use."

    "The #Tao is infinite, eternal. Why is it eternal? It was never born; thus it can never die. Why is it infinite? It has no desires for itself; thus it is present for all beings. The Master stays behind; that is why she is ahead. She is detached from all things; that is why she is one with them. Because she has let go of herself, she is perfectly fulfilled."

    "The #tao is called the Great Mother: empty yet inexhaustible, it gives birth to infinite worlds. It is always present within you. You can use it any way you want."

    [#taoteching #daodejing by #laozi #laotzu translated by Stephen Mitchell]

    The word for this passage, for me, is "graciousness." Yesterday, I read the #dao is impartial & nonaligned. But it is not cruel. It is empty because it keeps nothing to itself. I can always rely on it.

    "The Tao doesn’t take sides; it gives birth to both good and evil. The Master doesn’t take sides; she welcomes both saints and sinners. The Tao is like a bellows: it is empty yet infinitely capable. The more you use it, the more it produces; the more you talk of it, the less you understand. Hold on to the center."

    "The Tao is like a well: used but never used up. It is like the eternal void: filled with infinite possibilities. It is hidden but always present. I don’t know who gave birth to it. It is older than God."

    The #dao #tao is "infinity." It is everything, every being, molecule, atom, quark, boson, particle, wave, & force. It is time and everything time contains.

  39. "...Practice not-doing, and everything will fall into place."

    [#daodejing #taoteching by #Laotse #laotzu translated by Stephen Mitchell's]

    When I read Stephen Mitchell's translation of Laotse's words here, the word that comes to mind is "proportion." When I enjoy something, I tend to want more and more of it. Laotse warns me to be warry of 'too much of a good thing.' Instead of chasing the dopamine rush of excess, success and pleasure, I must remember the sage in Verse 2...(2/4)

  40. ...If I am to live in accord with the #dao, I must not work for the rewards, or the accolades. When it's time to work, I must not focus on all the possible outcomes but the work itself. And then move on. To have balance is to be present and perform mindfully, and diligently, and then let it go. Give it my best, and then forget it. (4/4)
