King Dan & the King’s man: Daniel O’Connell & Sir Walter Scott

He was a native Irish speaker but he discouraged the use of the language because he felt that English was the means of advancement. he insisted on addressing his meetings in English, sending interpreters out among the crowd to translate his words into Irish. He was described as having "indifference to the fate of the [Irish] language". 2/2

Not only did Mary #Wollstonecraft visit Ireland and like it, she was an important influence on #DanielOConnell
A liberal who corresponded with Jeremy #Bentham for a time and tirelessly campaigned against slavery & for Catholic Emancipation, and Repeal, O'Connell sent his children to the school of Wollstonecraft's sister in Dublin.

4 Feb: #DanielOConnell in 1830 became the first Roman Catholic to take his seat in the House of Commons in Westminster since the Test Acts of 1673 and 1678. https://www.parliament.uk/about/living-heritage/evolutionofparliament/parliamentaryauthority/revolution/overview/catholicsprotestants/
O'Connell had defeated William Vesey-FitzGerald in a #Clare by-election on 5 July 1828, but could not take his seat until the Catholic Emancipation Act 1829 was passed https://www.parliament.uk/about/living-heritage/evolutionofparliament/2015-parliament-in-the-making/get-involved1/2015-banners-exhibition/rachel-gadsden/1829-catholic-emancipation-act-gallery/
O'Connell was returned unopposed on 30 July 1830.
