She felt free and realized that her freedom was a particularly miserable one

Imprisoned by choice! Why would someone willingly step into a cage?

Driven by internalized ideals of endurance and self-sacrifice, a female hunger artist* is pushing her body beyond its limits, longing for recognition. In a society that promises liberation while enforcing visible and invisible constraints, she becomes trapped by the very beliefs that claim to set her free.

In this physical, urgent, yet playful performance, a dancer, a musician, and a responsive sound installation interact. Metal tubes transform from a cage into a maze of resonating pendulums.

Who is truly free? At a time when algorithms and social norms quietly shape our choices, and complex realities are reduced to headlines, political polarization grows. Through this work, we create space for reflection where conversation alone often fails.

About the makers

Isa Schmidbauer - contemporary dancer and choreographer - is in love with movement and searching for meaningful expression. Isa completed her BA at HfMT-Cologne, working with choreographers such as Tamara Gvozdanović, Gustavo Gómez, Sade Mamedova, Anton Lachky and Sigal Zouk. She has performed in theatre productions and independent scene projects, among others at Rozbark Theatre and at Theater Münster. She has also appeared in film projects and is exploring acting. She worked as an assistant director for Opera Spanga, collaborating with Ivgi & Greben. Her own works have been performed and developed at CCD Cologne, Splendor Amsterdam, and the Auftakt Festival in Cologne.

Jón Kleinehanding - singer and sound artist - creates unexpected live experiences, breaking the laws of physics with innovative soundscapes and sound installations. Jón studied jazz guitar at FÍH Reykjavík before pursuing a degree in jazz/pop vocal education at HfMT Cologne. Throughout his career, Jón has collaborated closely with the sound artists Rochus Aust and Verena Baré, at several Soirée Soniques and the Centre Court Festival in Cologne. He served as a curator for Containerklang #22, a contemporary music series for emerging artists. As a choir singer, he has performed at opera houses like MiR Gelsenkirchen and Staatstheater Darmstadt.

Each year in September, Amsterdam Fringe Festival showcases a mixture of theatre, performance and dance, created by new, upcoming and untamed talents.

We present a multidisciplinary program containing over 55 artists of diverse backgrounds, origins and futures. Our festival is a free zone for experiment and offers a stage to new makers and their stories. Amsterdam Fringe Festival is an ode to theatrical madness, independent minds and a plea to artistic freedom. A warm, intimate embrace of experimentation at its core: the outcome might be extremely surprising.

The entire city is our playground: from a garden to a bar and into a theatre, north to south; for 11 days you can find us at 23 locations, spread across Amsterdam.

Imprisoned by choice! Waarom zou iemand vrijwillig een kooi binnengaan?

Onze hongerkunstenares, een vrouw gedreven door idealen van uithoudingsvermogen en zelfopoffering, drijft haar lichaam tot het uiterste, verlangend naar erkenning. In een samenleving die bevrijding belooft, maar tegelijkertijd zichtbare en onzichtbare beperkingen oplegt, raakt zij gevangen in precies die overtuigingen die haar vrijheid zouden moeten schenken.

In deze fysieke, urgente maar tegelijk speelse voorstelling gaan een danser, een muzikant en een interactieve geluidsinstallatie met elkaar in dialoog. Metalen buizen transformeren van een kooi tot een doolhof van resonerende slingers.

Wie is werkelijk vrij? In een tijd waarin algoritmes en sociale normen ongemerkt onze keuzes sturen en complexe werkelijkheden worden gereduceerd tot krantenkoppen, neemt de politieke polarisatie toe. Met dit werk creëren we ruimte voor reflectie, daar waar woorden alleen soms tekortschieten.

Isa Schmidbauer – hedendaagse danseres en choreografe – houdt van beweging en is op zoek naar expressieve uitingsvormen. Isa voltooide haar bacheloropleiding aan de HfMT in Keulen, waar ze samenwerkte met choreografen als Tamara Gvozdanović, Gustavo Gómez, Sade Mamedova, Anton Lachky en Sigal Zouk. Ze trad op in theaterproducties en onafhankelijke scène-projecten, onder andere in het Rozbark Theater en in Theater Münster. Ze speelde ook in filmprojecten en verdiept zich in acteren. Ze werkte als regieassistent voor Opera Spanga, in samenwerking met Ivgi & Greben. Haar eigen werken zijn uitgevoerd en ontwikkeld bij CCD Keulen, Splendor Amsterdam en het Auftakt Festival in Keulen.

Isa Schmidbauer – hedendaagse danseres en choreografe – houdt van beweging en is op zoek naar expressieve uitingsvormen. Isa voltooide haar bacheloropleiding aan de HfMT in Keulen, waar ze samenwerkte met choreografen als Tamara Gvozdanović, Gustavo Gómez, Sade Mamedova, Anton Lachky en Sigal Zouk. Ze trad op in theaterproducties en onafhankelijke scène-projecten, onder andere in het Rozbark Theater en in Theater Münster. Ze speelde ook in filmprojecten en verdiept zich in acteren. Ze werkte als regieassistent voor Opera Spanga, in samenwerking met Ivgi & Greben. Jón studeerde jazzgitaar aan de FÍH Reykjavík, voordat hij een opleiding jazz/pop zangpedagogiek afrondde aan de HfMT Keulen. Gedurende zijn carrière heeft Jón nauw samengewerkt met de geluidskunstenaars Rochus Aust en Verena Baré, tijdens verschillende Soirée Soniques en het Centre Court Festival in Keulen. Imprisoned by choice! Why would someone willingly step into a cage?

Driven by internalized ideals of endurance and self-sacrifice, a female hunger artist* is pushing her body beyond its limits, longing for recognition. In a society that promises liberation while enforcing visible and invisible constraints, she becomes trapped by the very beliefs that claim to set her free.

In this physical, urgent, yet playful performance, a dancer, a musician, and a responsive sound installation interact. Metal tubes transform from a cage into a maze of resonating pendulums.

Who is truly free? At a time when algorithms and social norms quietly shape our choices, and complex realities are reduced to headlines, political polarization grows. Through this work, we create space for reflection where conversation alone often fails.

About the makers

Isa Schmidbauer - contemporary dancer and choreographer - is in love with movement and searching for meaningful expression. Isa completed her BA at HfMT-Cologne, working with choreographers such as Tamara Gvozdanović, Gustavo Gómez, Sade Mamedova, Anton Lachky and Sigal Zouk. She has performed in theatre productions and independent scene projects, among others at Rozbark Theatre and at Theater Münster. She has also appeared in film projects and is exploring acting. She worked as an assistant director for Opera Spanga, collaborating with Ivgi & Greben. Her own works have been performed and developed at CCD Cologne, Splendor Amsterdam, and the Auftakt Festival in Cologne.

About the makers

Isa Schmidbauer - contemporary dancer and choreographer - is in love with movement and searching for meaningful expression. Isa completed her BA at HfMT-Cologne, working with choreographers such as Tamara Gvozdanović, Gustavo Gómez, Sade Mamedova, Anton Lachky and Sigal Zouk. She has performed in theatre productions and independent scene projects, among others at Rozbark Theatre and at Theater Münster. She has also appeared in film projects and is exploring acting. She worked as an assistant director for Opera Spanga, collaborating with Ivgi & Greben. Her own works have been performed and developed at CCD Cologne, Splendor Amsterdam, and the Auftakt Festival in Cologne.

Jón Kleinehanding - singer and sound artist - creates unexpected live experiences, breaking the laws of physics with innovative soundscapes and sound installations. Jón studied jazz guitar at FÍH Reykjavík before pursuing a degree in jazz/pop vocal education at HfMT Cologne. Throughout his career, Jón has collaborated closely with the sound artists Rochus Aust and Verena Baré, at several Soirée Soniques and the Centre Court Festival in Cologne. He served as a curator for Containerklang #22, a contemporary music series for emerging artists. As a choir singer, he has performed at opera houses like MiR Gelsenkirchen and Staatstheater Darmstadt.

Each year in September, Amsterdam Fringe Festival showcases a mixture of theatre, performance and dance, created by new, upcoming and untamed talents.

We present a multidisciplinary program containing over 55 artists of diverse backgrounds, origins and futures. Our festival is a free zone for experiment and offers a stage to new makers and their stories. Amsterdam Fringe Festival is an ode to theatrical madness, independent minds and a plea to artistic freedom. A warm, intimate embrace of experimentation at its core: the outcome might be extremely surprising.

The entire city is our playground: from a garden to a bar and into a theatre, north to south; for 11 days you can find us at 23 locations, spread across Amsterdam.

Imprisoned by choice! Waarom zou iemand vrijwillig een kooi binnengaan?

Onze hongerkunstenares, een vrouw gedreven door idealen van uithoudingsvermogen en zelfopoffering, drijft haar lichaam tot het uiterste, verlangend naar erkenning. In een samenleving die bevrijding belooft, maar tegelijkertijd zichtbare en onzichtbare beperkingen oplegt, raakt zij gevangen in precies die overtuigingen die haar vrijheid zouden moeten schenken.

In deze fysieke, urgente maar tegelijk speelse voorstelling gaan een danser, een muzikant en een interactieve geluidsinstallatie met elkaar in dialoog. Metalen buizen transformeren van een kooi tot een doolhof van resonerende slingers.

Wie is werkelijk vrij? In een tijd waarin algoritmes en sociale normen ongemerkt onze keuzes sturen en complexe werkelijkheden worden gereduceerd tot krantenkoppen, neemt de politieke polarisatie toe. Met dit werk creëren we ruimte voor reflectie, daar waar woorden alleen soms tekortschieten.

Over de makers

Isa Schmidbauer – hedendaagse danseres en choreografe – houdt van beweging en is op zoek naar expressieve uitingsvormen. Isa voltooide haar bacheloropleiding aan de HfMT in Keulen, waar ze samenwerkte met choreografen als Tamara Gvozdanović, Gustavo Gómez, Sade Mamedova, Anton Lachky en Sigal Zouk. Ze trad op in theaterproducties en onafhankelijke scène-projecten, onder andere in het Rozbark Theater en in Theater Münster. Ze speelde ook in filmprojecten en verdiept zich in acteren. Ze werkte als regieassistent voor Opera Spanga, in samenwerking met Ivgi & Greben. Haar eigen werken zijn uitgevoerd en ontwikkeld bij CCD Keulen, Splendor Amsterdam en het Auftakt Festival in Keulen.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival toont ieder jaar in september 11 dagen lang een mixmash van theater, performance en dans van nieuw, opkomend en ongetemd talent.

We presenteren een multidisciplinair programma van ruim 55 makers/ groepen, met uiteenlopende achtergronden, herkomsten en toekomsten. Ons showcasefestival is een vrijhaven voor experiment en biedt een podium aan nieuwe makers en verhalen.
