John Calvin, Swiss Reformer, considers Paul’s appeal for Jerusalem famine in 2 Cor 8:8: “I speak not by commandment.” God demands some sort of help, but doesn’t specify the exact amount. The rule of love as the guide.
If “God everywhere” commands this, why isn’t Christian memosphere full of this— we see more analyses of how each suffering class has made its own bed!

Laurens Hickok, Presbyterian moderator, contrasts slavery in Hebrew Scriptures vs in his day. That service had an end period and prevented slavery of brethren. And bible didn’t recognize slavery among other peoples.
Do we only consult the holy texts for license to do as we please, or should we check the fine print for required restraint for the benefit of others?
