Now, logically, I want to say no. I don’t walk around tossing salt over my shoulder or fearing black cats. But if we’re being honest… I also refuse to say things like “Wow, nothing has gone wrong today!” because I know the universe is listening.

It’s easier to fool people… Weekly Recap 4/27/2026

Someone once said: “It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.”

The quote is usually attributed to Mark Twain, though there’s no real evidence to support that. Despite not knowing for sure where it came from, it’s still a great quote.

Now, it’s certainly not something I “live my life by,” but it has been on my mind a lot recently. You know, due to the state of the world and everything.

Most people (maybe it’s not fair to say “most”—if you think it’s unfair, substitute “many”) don’t ever reevaluate beliefs. They form an opinion and then run with it until they die. And it doesn’t matter how much evidence comes up to the contrary.

Good morning and happy Monday, friends.

Our coven celebrated an early Beltane this past Friday. There was magick and food and even some improvised Maypoles. We made honey jars and had a lot of fun. Pan and Aphrodite were up on the altar.

Unfortunately, I’m not feeling very well this morning so I’m going to keep it rather brief. If you’re bored, you can go and watch this silly short video I made.

Over the last week, I’ve been wrapping up final projects and papers for my Spring semester. I had to make a video presentation that ended up being almost 30 minutes long. Ridiculous!

In other news, I’m working on a new episode of M3 (hopefully out later this week) and—because people have asked for it quite a few times—a video on making a simple fluid condenser.

Since my birthday occurred while we were in Boston last week, we postponed celebrating. On Saturday, we went out to a diner, spent a nice day at home, and then got takeout from my favorite Indian restaurant.

I did not take a picture of our takeout dinner, but if you close your eyes and picture delicious Chicken Tikka Masala, then you’ll be somewhere in the right ballpark.

«El hombre europeo busca ser el centro del mundo» – Esta frase no deja de resonar en mi cabeza últimamente, especialmente después del despertar colectivo que ocurrió tras el famoso apagón español. 🌱💭

Lo que empezó como un simple corte de luz el 28 de abril en España terminó iluminando algo mucho más turbio y profundo. Mientras toda Latinoamérica se llenaba de memes (porque así somos nosotros, nos reímos hasta de la muerte y convertimos el caos en comedia), muchos españoles dejaron salir su racismo sin filtros.

Y no, no fueron solo trolls de internet o cuentas anónimas. Incluso personas que se autodenominan «feministas radicales» mostraron su verdadera cara. 😬

¿En serio? ¿Ese es tu feminismo? 🤨

El Colonialismo No Quedó En 1492, Solo Cambió De Forma 🗿👑

La colonización no terminó cuando nos «independizamos». Se transformó en algo más sutil pero igual de dañino: la colonización de nuestras mentes y narrativas.

Cuando les señalamos su racismo, responden con un clásico:

«No soy racista, soy feminista y blanca (supongo)»

🤡 Como si no pudiera ser ambas cosas a la vez…

Nos Quieren Hasta Quitar Cómo Nos Nombramos ✋🏽⛔

No les bastó con el oro y la tierra. Ahora quieren decirnos cómo debemos llamarnos:

• No somos «latinos» según ellos (porque eso son solo ellos, los descendientes de Roma 🙄)
• Quieren que nos llamemos «hispanoamericanos», un término que nos recuerda constantemente que estuvimos bajo su dominio

La Risa Como Resistencia: Lo Que No Entienden De Nosotros 💪🏽😂

Cuando un latinoamericano se ríe de una situación difícil, no está normalizando la precariedad – está resistiendo. Es nuestra forma de sobrevivir sin volvernos locos, de hacer comunidad en medio del caos.

Que haya tanto drama por un día sin luz mientras muchos tienen la capacidad de tomarse los contratiempos con humor, dice más de su falta de perspectiva que de nuestra supuesta «conformidad» con problemas estructurales.

El Privilegio De Indignarse Por 24 Horas Sin Electricidad 📱⚡

La realidad es diversa en toda Latinoamérica. En México, por ejemplo, los apagones no son comunes, y en muchas ciudades latinoamericanas el servicio eléctrico es tan estable como en Europa. Lo que sí compartimos es una capacidad de adaptación ante diferentes circunstancias, algo que injustamente se interpreta como señal de conformismo desde la perspectiva eurocéntrica.

Feminismo Que No Ve El Colonialismo No Es Feminismo 🚫♀️

El verdadero despertar que tuve fue entender que el feminismo que no reconoce las violencias estructurales del colonialismo es simplemente otra forma de opresión.

Por eso me estoy sumergiendo en el feminismo decolonial, porque necesitamos una perspectiva que:

• Reconozca las jerarquías raciales que el colonialismo impuso
• No infantilice nuestras formas de resistencia
• Entienda que la sororidad no puede ser selectiva

Quiero aclarar algo importante: no estoy en contra de los españoles. Mi crítica no va dirigida a un pueblo entero, sino específicamente contra quienes hablan con condescendencia, racismo y xenofobia hacia nuestros pueblos latinoamericanos. Son esas actitudes concretas las que merecen ser señaladas y cuestionadas.

No escribo esto desde el odio. Lo escribo desde la profunda decepción hacia quienes dicen luchar por todas, pero solo defienden a las que se parecen a ellas.

Si una «mentada de madre» en un meme te ofende más que la precariedad estructural que sufren millones de personas, entonces no estás combatiendo jerarquías – las estás reforzando.

Lo Que El Apagón Nos Enseñó A Todos 💡🌎

Este episodio nos mostró que aún tenemos mucho camino por recorrer. Que bajo la superficie de discursos progresistas pueden esconderse las mismas estructuras coloniales de siempre.

Pero también nos dejó ver que ya no nos callamos. Que señalamos las contradicciones, que cuestionamos los privilegios y que nuestra risa también es una forma de poder.

Paediatrics Posting. The posting of tiny human beings.

Looking back, I feared entering into the Paediatrics posting. I think I say that for almost every posting.

However, it was one that I fell in love with before I even off-tagged, as mentioned in one of my articles previously.

The stress level was not as bad as it was in other postings mainly because we were dealing with children. Not to say that treating them is easier, in fact it isn’t as they tend to fight back, scream or cry a lot.

I mean they’re just children.

But perhaps when I do come to work, the smile on their cute faces were enough to alleviate some of the stress and checking them clinically involves a skill as they are easily triggered. 

I would find myself playing with them or calming them down. Most of the time if I were to auscultate them, they would either start playing with it, swat it away or start crying.

The Paediatrics posting is the place I started eating again amidst the stress. Irregardless of the amount of patients and work to do, there is always time for lunch or at least our superiors will make sure of that. 

It was also the place where I enjoyed the long rounds in the morning and afternoon as well as I would present to specialists. 

I made a good friend with a medical officer who I still keep contact with albeit having left the posting. I enjoyed the days where I would be allocated to work with him. 

Having worked both in the general ward and nursery ward, the experiences were different but enjoyable nonetheless.

If there is a posting I wouldn’t mind repeating, it is the Paediatric Posting and I hope you do or will or had enjoyed this posting just as much as I did.

Paediatrics Posting. The posting of tiny human beings.

Looking back, I feared entering into the Paediatrics posting. I think I say that for almost every posting.

However, it was one that I fell in love with before I even off-tagged, as mentioned in one of my articles previously.

The stress level was not as bad as it was in other postings mainly because we were dealing with children. Not to say that treating them is easier, in fact it isn’t as they tend to fight back, scream or cry a lot.

I mean they’re just children.

But perhaps when I do come to work, the smile on their cute faces were enough to alleviate some of the stress and checking them clinically involves a skill as they are easily triggered.

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

I am half-Filipino. My mother is from the Philippines and my father, a Malaysian, like me.

Growing up, I was neither close to my mother’s or father’s side. However, between these two, I am somewhat culturally inclined towards my mother’s side through some of her simple heartwarming dishes that she cooked growing up as well as some of the Filipino songs she would play or the Tagalog words she would incorporate in her daily conversations.

Two of the simple dish my mother would prepare would be pasta or bolognese spaghetti and Buko salad.

1. Spaghetti

Originally, spaghetti is a form of pasta and a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine.

However, it also serves as one of the staple Filipino dishes.

My mother would usually make a batch of bolognese spaghetti occasionally and on New Year’s Eve, as that is what my maternal grandmother used to do while she was growing up.

It is rather simple and easy as well and she would go crazy with the cheddar cheese topping. Over the years, as she started to dwell into vegetarianism and eventually become one for a lifetime, she created her own variation of a vegetarian version.

2. Buko Salad

Adapted from https://www.kawalingpinoy.com/buko-salad/

“Buko” salad is a form of Filipino fruit salad.

“Buko” refers to a young coconut fruit and “Buko” salad consists of the young coconut itself.

It is a simple dish which has many variations.

My mother would usually mix with nata de coco of various colours, avoiding the colourless ones, corn, a huge can of mix fruits and other canned fruits before finally mixing it with evaporated milk, cheddar cheese and “buko”.

She will the separate it into containers and freeze it and have it on New Year’s Eve.

Growing up, my family would be seated at the dining table with other dishes prepared on New Year’s Eve for us to dine in together at midnight and every year, these two dishes remains a staple.

Daily writing prompt What would your life be like without music? View all responses

Utterly boring.

As far as I could recall, I have always associated studying with music.

Perhaps it is because while growing up, my mom had always filled the house with music and made me sit at a corner to study whether I liked it or not, I had to study.

Eventually, I’ve grown used to, to studying with music or reading with music.

In high school, I discovered the kind of music that I like as well as the suitable time for me to study.

Thus, music and studying goes hand-in-hand or I will not be able to focus.

Eventually, I shift to Podcasts and Audiobooks while I am going about doing my chores or cooking, I am either listening to these or music.

Even my daily morning writing has jazz or lo-fi playing in the background.

There are days of course when I do not feel like listening to my music or is simply not in the mood for other musics.

Thus, “lo-fi” or “jazz” are my go-to. Still musical nevertheless.

Daily writing prompt What would your life be like without music? View all responses

Utterly boring.

As far as I could recall, I have always associated studying with music.

Perhaps it is because while growing up, my mom had always filled the house with music and made me sit at a corner to study whether I liked it or not, I had to study.

Eventually, I’ve grown used to, to studying with music or reading with music.

In high school, I discovered the kind of music that I like as well as the suitable time for me to study.

Thus, music and studying goes hand-in-hand or I will not be able to focus.

Eventually, I shift to Podcasts and Audiobooks while I am going about doing my chores or cooking, I am either listening to these or music.

Even my daily morning writing has jazz or lo-fi playing in the background.

There are days of course when I do not feel like listening to my music or is simply not in the mood for other musics.

Thus, “lo-fi” or “jazz” are my go-to. Still musical nevertheless.

I like to borrow my quote-to-live-by from the keyboard player for Spinal Tap. He said, “have a good time, all the time.”

No… sorry, I can’t back that up. I’m full of it. I don’t live my life that way. I more live my life by a quote from the drummer from Spinal Tap. He said, “the law of averages says you will survive.” Actually, Marty DiBergi said that, not the drummer. He said it to the drummer and the drummer agreed… and then shortly after the drummer exploded on stage.

So that might not be a good quote to live by either.

Google used to have a good quote and I would like to say I try to live my life by it, even if Google does not. Google said, “don’t be evil.” I would expect most of us could live by that pretty successfully without much effort, but if that is the case how does one explain the maga cult and the rise of fascism worldwide? That’s the exact opposite of don’t be evil. That’s a bunch of psychotics embracing evil and being as evil as humanly possible all day long.

Crap.

I guess I don’t really have a quote to live my life by. I love my wife and I love my kids and I love my family and I love my friends and I try to be a good employee and a good supervisor and I try to play the guitar as much as possible and I try to embrace the chaos that is the occasional run-on sentence.

Other than that… I guess… have a good time all the time.

If we truly look at we humans have achieved over the centuries, what we have created, it has been a reflection of how we wish to improve things.

A sculptor looks at stone and wishes to make it in a different image, an artist finds a way to decorate a blank canvas, a writer empowers imagination through words on blank pages – and we all decorate time. In fact, we regularly graffiti the tyrannical walls of time with our creativity.

We criticize by creating, our every invention a way an attempt to improve upon what already exists – or we would not create it at all.

Too often we get into a spiral of criticizing things without actually making things better, like over-exuberant sculptors working on sandstone with a sledgehammer, when maybe what we should be doing is simply building something different.

Sadly, it is not as easy these days to build great things- large companies seem to have sucked all the air out of the room in many contexts – but it doesn’t stop us from creating the small things, the little things that make the big things, the words that make the sentences that make the paragraphs.

I often have to remind myself of Michelangelo’s words: Criticize by creating.
