This morning, my son and his buddies threw out a dangerous question: “Are you superstitious?”

Now, logically, I want to say no. I don’t walk around tossing salt over my shoulder or fearing black cats. But if we’re being honest… I also refuse to say things like “Wow, nothing has gone wrong today!” because I know the universe is listening.

So, am I superstitious? Let’s just say I respect the possibility of unseen forces—but I’m also not afraid to test them.

🔹 Example: “Ugh, I never get sick.” Boom—suddenly, I’m drowning in tissues and self-pity.
🔹 Pain Level: 9/10. Because why does the universe have to be so petty?

✅ How I Handle It: I knock on wood. Every time. Even if it’s fake. Even if people are watching. If I forget? You best believe I’m mentally whispering “no jinx, no jinx, no jinx” to undo the damage.

2. The ‘Something Feels Off’ Rule (My Sixth Sense is Real)

I don’t know if it’s energy, instinct, or just years of experience with people being sketchy, but if something feels wrong, I listen.

🔹 Example: Walking into a place and feeling an immediate, unexplainable sense of nope.
🔹 Pain Level: 10/10 if ignored. Because the ONE TIME I brushed it off, I ended up in a situation I never should have been in.

I used to spend too much time on Farcebook just blindly scrolling and hoping not to catch a virus. Those days are behind me now.

I have accounts with Tik Tok and YouTube that I rarely get on. I never really learnt the ends and outs of Tik Tok so it sits idle. As for YouTube, I had been making videos but have removed most of them and now it also sits idle.

WordPress. My social media platform that has become a lifeline to keep in touch with some fantastic friends I have made since joining in 24′. I became a secluded self imposed hermit after the vid and slowly opened up to this wonderful world of engagement. I have found a family of courteous and like minded souls that can handle my rants and sometimes enjoy my silliness and off the wall thoughts.

It’s a welcome part of my life and my friends here encourage me to continue on my journey that started with not knowing what to say to publishing two books to my new endeavor of making music with the help of AI.

Does email count as social media? I use it to contact lost friends from here once in a while, to reach out and see if they are doing okay but that is rare too as I don’t want to pressure them into answering me, they left for a reason.

I have a cuz that follows me on here and that is our only contact as we live many miles apart and life gets in our way but I love hearing from him, ‘hey cuz, ROCK ON!’

I tagged for almost a month here.

The tagging timing in the Surgical Posting is from 7am till 10pm which is same as with other postings, except Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G).

In the Surgical Posting, we all have to complete a compulsory 14-Day-Tagging period irregardless of having “off-tagged”. Entering the Surgical Department as a senior or fourth poster, we are allocated to special shifts such as night shifts in ward or night shifts in ethe emergency department (ETD).

This serves as an advantage to us seniors as we do not have to work the morning shift for one week straight prior to having an off day. It is also better as it allows us to recuperate in between by not having to go to work extremely early.

However, the disadvantage is that our tagging period is somewhat extended.

As I mentioned before, we are required to complete a 14-Day-Tagging period. The night shift is not counted. Hence, the tagging duration can go up to 3 weeks.

For me, it extended up to 4 weeks due to my medical leaves (MC).

During my first week of tagging, I took a day of medical leave due to extreme fatigue and in the second week, I took 3 days of medical leaves due to extreme fatigue and COVID-19.

At the time of writing this article, I am on a 6 weeks medical leave due to my ATFL injury.

Sometimes I wonder, if I will ever exit this posting and proceed with my last which is medical.

Back to the tagging part, thus my tagging period lasted for a month.

Going to work as a tagger, I would leave home around 5:45am – 6am. Partly because I’m just tired and felt like I needed more rest because there will always be an active issue in ward and I am only able to return home at 10pm.

In the evening around 7pm, I would go for dinner after handing over to the night colleagues and completing my tasks and on-call reviews for the day. Most of the time, it would be our first meal of the day.

Some days, we would be done by 8-9pm and on some days, earlier. Most of us, upon completing, would head for dinner and head home or to just head home straightaway.

This is wrong of course but we were simply exhausted and burnt-out during the tagging period. Thus, we grab the opportunity while we could.

Towards the end of my tagging period, I started bringing packed dinner boxes and reheating them as work prior going back.

Surviving the tagging period in the Surgical Posting was hard and tiring but eventually, it did came to an end.

Thus, if you have yet to enter the Surgical Posting, the tagging period is indeed tiring as with any posting. However, try to learn as much as you can and take comfort in the fact that it does come to an end.

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

I am half-Filipino. My mother is from the Philippines and my father, a Malaysian, like me.

Growing up, I was neither close to my mother’s or father’s side. However, between these two, I am somewhat culturally inclined towards my mother’s side through some of her simple heartwarming dishes that she cooked growing up as well as some of the Filipino songs she would play or the Tagalog words she would incorporate in her daily conversations.

Two of the simple dish my mother would prepare would be pasta or bolognese spaghetti and Buko salad.

1. Spaghetti

Originally, spaghetti is a form of pasta and a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine.

However, it also serves as one of the staple Filipino dishes.

My mother would usually make a batch of bolognese spaghetti occasionally and on New Year’s Eve, as that is what my maternal grandmother used to do while she was growing up.

It is rather simple and easy as well and she would go crazy with the cheddar cheese topping. Over the years, as she started to dwell into vegetarianism and eventually become one for a lifetime, she created her own variation of a vegetarian version.

2. Buko Salad

“Buko” salad is a form of Filipino fruit salad.

“Buko” refers to a young coconut fruit and “Buko” salad consists of the young coconut itself.

It is a simple dish which has many variations.

My mother would usually mix with nata de coco of various colours, avoiding the colourless ones, corn, a huge can of mix fruits and other canned fruits before finally mixing it with evaporated milk, cheddar cheese and “buko”.

She will the separate it into containers and freeze it and have it on New Year’s Eve.

Growing up, my family would be seated at the dining table with other dishes prepared on New Year’s Eve for us to dine in together at midnight and every year, these two dishes remains a staple.

Utterly boring.

As far as I could recall, I have always associated studying with music.

Perhaps it is because while growing up, my mom had always filled the house with music and made me sit at a corner to study whether I liked it or not, I had to study.

Eventually, I’ve grown used to, to studying with music or reading with music.

In high school, I discovered the kind of music that I like as well as the suitable time for me to study.

Thus, music and studying goes hand-in-hand or I will not be able to focus.

Eventually, I shift to Podcasts and Audiobooks while I am going about doing my chores or cooking, I am either listening to these or music.

Even my daily morning writing has jazz or lo-fi playing in the background.

There are days of course when I do not feel like listening to my music or is simply not in the mood for other musics.

Thus, “lo-fi” or “jazz” are my go-to. Still musical nevertheless.

In the early days of social media I used the holy hell out of it. Yahoo 360 was first for me. It had a blog space. I started writing whatever crap popped into my head. Not long after I moved over to Myspace and planted my social media flag there. Again, I used the bejeezus out of the blog there. Everything I posted there has been ported over here. Back in 2006 I connected with a woman through Myspace. She was nice and charming and funny and wonderful and today she is my wife. How is that for a social media success story?

By 2008 Myspace was history and Jen and I both started Twitter and Facebook (Bookfayce) accounts. I used them a lot. I mean, a lot. In November of 2008 I also started a stand alone blog on Blogger. Two of them, actually. One was public and the other was private. I kept anything related to my kids on the private account. Everything from both blogs now lives on this blog, just like the Myspace stuff. In 2009 I started an account on what might be one of the original social media platforms. Flickr. No one uses it socially anymore, mostly, but it is still the best site for hosting photos. I have a few there. By “a few” I mean over 55,000… so yeah, I use the hell out it.

When Instagram came along I sort of saw it as a companion to Flickr. I opened an account right away but closed it after a while. Then after some time passed I opened another one and then closed it. I can’t remember how many times I did that. I just didn’t like the interface. Scrolling kept “accidentally” marking things as favorites and it drove me friggin’ nuts. Eventually I just gave in and kept an account live. I still pop in once or twice a day, mostly to look at Les Pauls. I post there now and then but I don’t really interact with anyone. It’s like Flickr. It is a social media platform, but I am not terribly social on it.

A few years ago I got fed up with all of it. Facebook was turning into a cesspool as the fascist maga cult was pulling in people I knew and they were getting louder and louder and the idiotic algorithm was showing me more and more of that garbage and I just decided I didn’t want to go there anymore. I’ve missed out on a lot of family and friends stuff, but from a mental health standpoint I feel better about the world. When I started the weight loss surgery process it was suggested that I join some support groups on Facebook, so that pulled me back in for a while, but eventually I had a good enough grip on the situation that I wasn’t learning anything new anymore so I backed off again. I still pop in now and then to see what people are going through with their recoveries, but I don’t do it often. Twitter went from a similar sort of cesspool vibe to an absolutely ridiculous den of scummy bullshit when that musk putz bought them out. I don’t use that at all anymore.

I’m trying to keep my toes dipped in the social media world via a few Twitter alternatives. I want to pick one and just use that when I need a social fix, or when I am bored and want to kill a few minutes. Threads has a good music community but given that it’s a bookfayce product it makes me want to vomit when I use it. Bluesky and Mastodon are okay but I don’t really have a community to connect with on either platform so I don’t use them often. This blog cross posts to Mastodon so there’s that at least.

So the answer to the actual question, How do you use social media is that I try not to. Not really, at least. I was 100% invested in it back in the oughts and early teens, but now I just feel like it’s mostly outlived its usefulness. Instagram, Youtube, Flickr… yeah, I still use those regularly but I don’t really use them as social media outlets. I get all of my public bitching and moaning ya ya’s out on this page. I still use this thing a lot. I mean, a lot. Way too much. I mean, way too much. Part of me wants to stop entirely but I doubt I have the will power for that. Although… I thought the same thing about Bookfayce once too. Maybe… Maybe it’s time to just quit cold turkey. Probably not today though. Yeah, I am sure I can quit any time I want. You know that song, right?
