  1. ASHWAGANDA

The Book of the First Warmth In the beginning, there was only the cold hard floor, and it was bad. Then, the Great Ginger Spirit stretched his long paws and said, “Let there be soft things.” And suddenly, there were wool blankets, bordeaux velvet chairs, and warm spots of sunlight on the rug. Ashwaganda looked at the soft things and saw that they were very good. He curled into a perfect round circle, wrapped his thick ginger tail over his nose, and took the first holy nap. The world was finally at peace.

The Book of the Tall Servants The world was soft, but Ashwaganda knew he could not open the heavy metal cans by himself. The cans held the sacred wet food. So, he decided to allow the Humans to exist. He allowed them to be tall so they could reach the high shelves where the best treats are hidden. He gave them soft hands so they could scratch right behind his ears.

He chose Moira to be his head servant. He gave her the tea shop so she would always have a warm fire for him to sleep next to. The duty of Moira and all tall servants is very simple: serve the food the moment the sun comes up, never touch the belly unless asked, and never, ever move your legs when a cat is sleeping on them.

The Holy Rules of the Bowl Listen closely to the true laws of the soft paws.

First, the bottom of the food bowl must never, ever be seen. If you can see the bottom of the bowl, the bowl is completely empty, even if there is food around the edges. You must sit next to it and sing the loud song of deep sadness until a tall servant comes to fix this terrible mistake.

Second, the best time to run extremely fast from one side of the house to the other is in the exact middle of the dark night. You must sound like a heavy horse. This reminds the humans who is truly awake and in charge.

Third, a closed door is a great insult. You must scratch at the wood and cry until the tall servant opens it. Once the door is open, you do not have to go inside. You only need to sit right in the middle of the doorway, looking outside, to prove that you hold all the power.

The Book of the Black Shadow A king of the warm sunlight needs a brother in the dark. Ashwaganda accepted Toe, the black Maine Coon, as his holy partner. While Ashwaganda claims the soft blankets and the center of the room, Toe rules the high wooden shelves. Toe is the silent watcher with green eyes. Toe strikes at the dust in the air. Together, the orange fire and the black shadow keep the tea shop totally safe from the cold wind and the strange people who come to buy tea.

The Promise of the Red Dot There is a very old secret story. It speaks of a small, bright red light that moves fast across the floors and walls. Many brave cats have chased it. No cat has ever caught it. But the holy truth says that one day, Ashwaganda will stretch out his mighty ginger paw and trap the red dot forever. On that day, the grand victory will bring endless plates of fresh salmon, the sweet smell of rosemary will fill the air forever, and it will never be time to wake up.

  2. A New Recipe for Trouble

The air in the hills above Speranza was biting and crisp, carrying the raw, earthy scent of decaying leaves and wet pine. Moira led the way, her sturdy leather boots crushing the frost-tipped grass with a rhythmic crunch. She knew this ancient trail blindfolded, having walked it countless times to gather chamomile, wild rosemary, and the elusive mountain mint. Behind her, Elio the chef struggled to keep a steady pace, heavily out of his element. He was a man accustomed to the flat, polished tiles of a modern commercial kitchen, not the rugged, uneven roots of a centuries-old forest.

Despite his heavy breathing, Elio refused to let the conversation die. They had been arguing since they left the cobblestone perimeter of the village. “It is a matter of consistency, Moira,” Elio insisted, dodging a low-hanging oak branch. “A steel pasta machine guarantees that every single ribbon of dough is exactly the same millimeter thick. It cooks evenly, it plates beautifully, and it removes human error from the equation.”

Moira stopped and turned, her breath pluming in the cold air. “Human error is what gives the food a soul, Elio. When you make sfoglia tirata al mattarello, the wooden rolling pin creates micro-abrasions in the dough.” She looked at him with the stern authority of a village elder, even though she was far too young for the title. “Those tiny, imperfect grooves are what hold the heavy meat ragù. A machine makes the pasta too slick, too perfect, and the sauce slips right off into a sad puddle at the bottom of the bowl.”

Elio wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, despite the chill. “But tradition must leave room for innovation. I am preparing coda alla vaccinara for the mayor tonight. If I rely only on the old ways, it is just another heavy stew. The wild mallow will cut through the richness with a fresh, botanical edge.”

“Mallow in an oxtail stew is a gimmick,” Moira replied plainly, turning back to the steep path. “If you cook it low and slow for six hours, the fat renders, the meat falls from the bone, and the celery provides all the aromatic balance you need. You are trying to fix something that is not broken.”

“I am trying to wake up a village that has fallen asleep at the dining table,” Elio muttered, though he hurried to catch up with her brisk pace.

They climbed higher, leaving the familiar sight of Speranza’s terracotta roofs far below them. The woods here grew denser, the trunks of the ancient trees thick with dark green moss. The sunlight struggled to pierce the canopy, casting long, twisting shadows across the damp forest floor. The cheerful chirping of the village birds faded, replaced by the heavy, silent weight of the deep woods.

“We are close,” Moira whispered, her voice instinctively dropping in the quiet space. “Tread carefully. The ground is soft near the spring.”

They emerged into a small, shadowed clearing where a narrow ribbon of water trickled down a rocky embankment. The air here was sharp with the smell of wet stone and cold water. Along the muddy bank, small, vibrant green leaves clustered tightly together.

Elio’s face lit up with genuine triumph. “The wild mallow,” he breathed, dropping to his knees in the damp soil. He pulled a pristine white cloth bag from his apron pocket. With the delicate precision of a surgeon, he began to pinch the tender leaves from their stems.

Moira watched him, offering a quiet nod of approval. For all his talk of machines and modern tricks, he handled the fragile plants with absolute respect. Perhaps the chef had a soul after all.

“There are some wild primroses just under that overhang,” Moira pointed to a large, flat gray stone embedded in the bank.

Elio shifted his weight, his boots sinking an inch into the mud. He reached under the stone, feeling for the soft petals of the primrose. Instead, his fingers scraped against something hard, cold, and unnaturally smooth.

“That is not a rock,” Elio said, his brow furrowing. He dug his fingers deeper into the freezing mud, gripping the edge of the buried object. He pulled hard, grunting with the effort, until a thick layer of earth gave way with a wet, sucking sound.

He pulled it out and set it on the moss between them. It was a metal box, about the size of a large dictionary, heavily encrusted with decades of rust and dark river mud. The hinges were thick and archaic.

Moira felt the temperature in the clearing drop. Her medical instincts flared, a sudden spike of adrenaline rushing through her veins. She knelt beside Elio and used a fallen twig to scrape away the thickest layer of mud from the lid.

Beneath the grime, a carving was revealed. It was a serpent, its body coiled in an intricate, endless knot, its mouth wide open to swallow its own tail. It was not a crude drawing, but a masterfully engraved piece of art.

“What is this doing out here?” Elio asked, wiping his muddy hands on a spare towel from his pocket. “It looks like it has been buried for fifty years. Maybe more.”

Moira did not answer immediately. Her mind raced back to The Days of the Dreams, the ancient blue book locked safely inside her tea shop. The book had warned of debts, of poisons, of dark birds seeking nests. It had never mentioned a coiled snake buried in the mud, but the heavy, oppressive energy radiating from the rusted iron was undeniable. It felt exactly like the dark magic that had recently invaded her village.

“We should leave it,” Moira said firmly. She stood up and took a step back. “It does not belong to us. The woods hide things for a reason, Elio.”

Elio looked at her as if she had suggested boiling pasta in cold water. “Leave it? Moira, this is a piece of history. There could be old coins inside, or village records, or jewelry. We cannot just leave a mystery sitting in the mud.”

“Some mysteries are meant to stay buried,” she countered, her voice tight. “You have your mallow. Let us go back.”

But the chef was already shaking the box. It was incredibly heavy, and a dull, solid thud echoed from within. Something heavy was wrapped in fabric inside. Elio’s curiosity was a powerful, reckless force.

“I am taking it back,” Elio declared, tucking the heavy iron box under his arm. “If it is dangerous, we will give it to Ispettore Salomone. But I am not walking away from this.”

Moira wanted to argue, to demand he drop it in the river. But she knew that if Elio took it to the police, Salomone would open it blindly. If it contained a curse, a poison, or a dark artifact, the whole village could be at risk. She needed to be the one to open it, with her cats and her book nearby for protection.

“Fine,” Moira said, her voice sharp with dread. “But you bring it to my shop. Not your kitchen. Not the police station. We open it together behind closed doors.”

Elio nodded, surprised by her sudden intensity. “Deal. To the tea shop.”

The walk back down the hill was agonizingly slow. The rusted box seemed to drain the energy from the air around them. Elio, who had been so talkative on the way up, was completely silent now. He shifted the heavy iron from one arm to the other, his breathing ragged.

Moira kept her eyes on the path, but her senses were on high alert. The woods, which had always been her sanctuary, now felt like they were watching her. Every snapping twig sounded like a footstep. Every gust of wind felt like a warning whisper.

“It is incredibly heavy,” Elio finally muttered, pausing to adjust his grip. “What kind of metal is this? It feels like lead.”

“Don’t stop,” Moira urged, checking the lengthening shadows. The sun was beginning its descent, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and dark orange. “We need to get back before the dark settles.”

They finally breached the tree line and stepped onto the paved stone of the village edge. The warm, yellow lights of Speranza were flickering on in the shop windows. The smell of woodsmoke and roasting garlic drifted through the air, a stark contrast to the cold, ancient dread Moira felt in her chest.

Elio headed straight toward his modern kitchen, his mind seemingly back on his dinner service. Moira grabbed his sleeve.

“No,” she said softly but firmly. “You promised. Bring it to La Pagina che Fa le Fusa.”

Elio blinked, as if waking from a trance. “Right. Yes. Let’s get it open. I need to start my coda alla vaccinara soon anyway.”

Moira unlocked the heavy wooden door of her shop and pushed it open. The familiar, comforting aroma of dried chamomile, crushed rosemary, and old paper rushed to greet her. The warmth of the room was a physical relief against her cold skin.

Ashwaganda, the massive ginger cat, immediately stood up from his wool blanket. He did not purr. He stared directly at the rusted box in Elio’s hands, the fur along his spine standing straight up. From the top bookshelf, Toe let out a low, vibrating growl, his green eyes wide and locked on the iron snake.

“Your cats are very dramatic,” Elio noted, setting the heavy box down on the thick oak counter with a loud clank.

“They have good instincts,” Moira replied, locking the door behind them and flipping the sign to ‘Closed’. She walked behind the counter and reached underneath, quietly resting her hand on the hidden blue leather cover of her book.

“We will need a strong tool,” Elio said, inspecting the rusted latch. He pulled a thick, steel oyster knife from his chef’s coat. “This should provide enough leverage to break the rust on the hinge.”

Moira did not stop him. She stood back, her body tense, ready to react to whatever sprang from the dark interior.

Elio wedged the tip of the thick steel knife under the iron latch. He grunted, pushing his entire body weight down onto the handle. The metal screeched, a horrible, high-pitched sound that made both cats hiss in unison. With a sharp crack, the rusted lock snapped.

The chef slowly lifted the heavy iron lid. It creaked backward, releasing a puff of stale, dry air that smelled faintly of dried roses and copper.

Moira leaned in, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Inside the box, resting on a bed of decaying crimson velvet, was a single, beautifully bound notebook. The cover was made of pure white leather, untouched by the mud or the dampness of the earth. But it was not the pristine leather that made Moira gasp.

Stamped into the center of the white cover, in brilliant, shining silver, was the exact same emblem that graced her own magical book. A sleeping cat, curled protectively around an ornate key.

It was a second book. A twin to The Days of the Dreams.

Elio reached his flour-dusted hand toward the white cover. “It’s just an old journal,” he said, sounding slightly disappointed. “No gold. No coins.”

“Do not touch it!” Moira shouted, her voice echoing off the wooden beams.

Elio froze, his hand hovering an inch above the silver cat. He looked at Moira, shock registering on his face. The quiet, calm tea shop owner looked genuinely terrified.

Before Elio could pull his hand back, the silver ink on the white cover began to glow. A faint, icy blue light pulsed from the emblem, casting sharp shadows against the walls of the shop. The magic in Speranza was no longer a secret Moira carried alone.

  4. Let’s get real!

    What bothers you and why?

📌Disclaimer: Please note that if you click on any of the links and make a purchase, I will be receiving a small commission at NO extra cost to you📌

    Hey there, lovely readers!

Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of pet peeves.

Yep, we’re talking about those little things that just get under your skin and make you want to scream into a pillow.

What bothers you and why? Buckle up because we’re about to take a wilde ride through some common annoyances.

    1. Slow Internet

Let’s kick things off with a classic: slow internet.

Is there anything more infuriating than watching the spinning wheel of death while trying to stream your favourite show?

Or worse, when you’re in the middle of an important Zoom meeting and your screen freezes in the most unflattering way possible.

Seriously, is it too much to ask for a stable connection in the 21st century?

    2. Telemarketers

    Next up, telemarketers.

These persistent callers have an uncanny ability to ring just as you’re sitting down for dinner or when you’re in the middle of a relaxing bath.

    The worst part?

They always seem to have the most important and irrelevant offers just for you.

“Congratulations! You’ve been selected for a free cruise!” Thanks, but I’ll pass.

    3. Overly Loud Chewing

Can we talk about loud chewers for a second?

There’s something about the sound of someone chomping away on their food that can drive even the most patient person up the wall.

It’s like they’re auditioning for a role in a sound effects department.

If I wanted to hear that, I’d turn on an ASMR video.

    4. Endless Email Chains

How about those never-ending email chains?

You know the ones where everyone feels the need to hit “Reply All” with their two cents.

Before you know it, your inbox looks like a novel, and you’re stuck scrolling through 47 messages just to find the original point.

Can we all agree to use “Reply All” sparingly?

    5. Misbehaving Technology

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, right?

But when your printer decides to have a meltdown right before an important deadline or your phone battery dies at 20%, it feels like the universe is playing a cruel joke.

Don’t even get me started on autocorrect—no, I did not mean “ducking.”

    6. Slow Walkers

And then there are the slow walkers.

You’re in a hurry, weaving through the crowd like a ninja, and then you get stuck behind someone who seems to be taking a leisurely Sunday stroll on a Tuesday morning.

It’s like they’re walking through molasses, and all you can do is smile politely and wait for an opening.

    7. Leftovers with No Expiration Date

Here’s a fun one: leftovers in the fridge with no expiration date.

Is this container of spaghetti from last week or last month? Who knows!

It’s a game of culinary roulette, and the stakes are high.

Do you risk it, or do you toss it? The struggle is real.

So, there you have it—my list of things that bother me and why.

From slow internet to leftover roulette, these little annoyances can really test our patience.

But hey, they also give us something to laugh about (eventually).

What bothers you and why? Share your pet peeves in the comments below—I can’t wait to commiserate with you!

  5. Home Decor Gone Wrong: Laughing Through the Chaos

📌Disclaimer: Please note that if you click on any of the links and make a purchase, I will be receiving a small commission at NO extra cost to you📌

Home decor projects are supposed to transform our spaces into beautiful, cosy sanctuaries.

But sometimes, even with the best intentions, things go hilariously wrong.

Let’s dive into some funny stories of home decor mishaps and share tips on how to keep your cool when chaos ensues.

    **1. The DIY Disaster**

    – **Story**: Inspired by a trendy DIY project on Pinterest, you decide to create a stunning accent wall using reclaimed wood.

Halfway through, you realize you’ve miscalculated the amount of wood needed and now have a patchwork wall that looks more like a jigsaw puzzle than a rustic masterpiece.

    – **Tip**: Measure twice, buy once. Always purchase a little extra material to account for mistakes.

    And remember, imperfections add character!

    **2. The Furniture Fiasco**

    – **Story**: You fall in love with a massive vintage dresser at a flea market.

Without measuring your space, you buy it, only to find it won’t fit through your front door.

Now, it’s an unwelcome lawn ornament until you figure out what to do with it.

    – **Tip**: Measure your doorways, hallways, and the intended space before purchasing large furniture.

If you’re unsure, bring a friend for a second opinion.

    **3. The Paint Panic**

    – **Story**: You decide to freshen up your living room with a bold new paint colour.

After a few hours of painting, you step back and realize your vibrant choice looks more like a fluorescent nightmare.

Your living room now resembles a neon sign.

    – **Tip**: Always test paint colors on a small section of the wall first and view them at different times of the day.

If you make a mistake, don’t panic—paint is relatively easy to fix.

    **4. The Curtain Catastrophe**

    – **Story**: You order beautiful new curtains online, only to find out they’re too short for your windows.

Instead of elegant drapes, you’ve got awkward high-water curtains that make your windows look like they’re wearing capris.

    – **Tip**: Measure your windows’ height and width before ordering curtains.

If you’ve already made the mistake, consider adding a coordinating fabric panel at the bottom to lengthen them.

    **5. The Assembly Agony**

    – **Story**: That flat-pack furniture seemed like a bargain until you started assembling it.

Three hours in, you’re surrounded by an assortment of screws and mysterious parts, and the instructions might as well be in another language.

    – **Tip**: Take your time, follow the instructions step by step, and don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Sometimes, an extra pair of hands makes all the difference.

    **6. The Rug Riddle**

    – **Story**: You buy a gorgeous area rug online, but when it arrives, it’s way too small for your living room.

Now, it looks like a tiny island in the middle of your sea of furniture.

    – **Tip**: A rug should be large enough to fit under all major pieces of furniture in a room.

If you’re in doubt, bigger is usually better.

    **7. The Lighting Lunacy**

    – **Story**: In an effort to brighten up your home, you install new light fixtures.

But instead of a warm, inviting glow, you get blinding interrogation room lighting.

Now, every flaw in your decor (and skin) is painfully visible.

    – **Tip**: Choose light bulbs with the right colour temperature for the mood you want to create.

Warm white (2700K-3000K) is usually best for living spaces.

    **8. The Art Arrangement Anarchy**

    – **Story**: Determined to create a gallery wall, you enthusiastically start hanging frames without a plan.

The result is a chaotic, uneven mess that looks more like a crime scene than an art display.

    – **Tip**: Lay out your frames on the floor first to plan the arrangement.

Use a level and painter’s tape to mark the wall before hammering in nails.

    **9. The Plant Predicament**

    – **Story**: You add a touch of green with some houseplants, but within weeks, they’re wilted and sad.

Turns out, your green thumb is more like a black thumb.

    – **Tip**: Choose plants that suit your home’s lighting conditions and your care abilities.

Start with low-maintenance plants like succulents or snake plants.

    **10. The Accessory Overload**

    – **Story**: Eager to decorate, you fill every surface with trinkets and decor pieces.

Instead of a stylish look, you end up with a cluttered mess that feels more like a flea market than a home.

  6. Superstitious? Me? Pfft… Unless the Universe is Listening.

    Are you superstitious?

📌Disclaimer: Please note that if you click on any of the buttons and make a purchase, I will be receiving a small commission at NO extra cost to you📌

    Am I Superstitious? Let’s Just Say… It’s Complicated.

This morning, my son and his buddies threw out a dangerous question: “Are you superstitious?”

Now, logically, I want to say no. I don’t walk around tossing salt over my shoulder or fearing black cats. But if we’re being honest… I also refuse to say things like “Wow, nothing has gone wrong today!” because I know the universe is listening.

So, am I superstitious? Let’s just say I respect the possibility of unseen forces—but I’m also not afraid to test them.

Wanderlust Chronicles Page-Turners Galore Silver Screen Escapes Glam Squad Essentials Chic Chronicles Tiny Treasures Home Sweet Home Nail Envy Gifts Galore

    Let’s break it down.

    1. The ‘Don’t Jinx It’ Rule (AKA, I’m Not Stupid)

You ever confidently say something, only for life to immediately slap you in the face?

🔹 Example: “Ugh, I never get sick.” Boom—suddenly, I’m drowning in tissues and self-pity.
🔹 Pain Level: 9/10. Because why does the universe have to be so petty?

✅ How I Handle It: I knock on wood. Every time. Even if it’s fake. Even if people are watching. If I forget? You best believe I’m mentally whispering “no jinx, no jinx, no jinx” to undo the damage.

    2. The ‘Something Feels Off’ Rule (My Sixth Sense is Real)

I don’t know if it’s energy, instinct, or just years of experience with people being sketchy, but if something feels wrong, I listen.

🔹 Example: Walking into a place and feeling an immediate, unexplainable sense of nope.
🔹 Pain Level: 10/10 if ignored. Because the ONE TIME I brushed it off, I ended up in a situation I never should have been in.

✅ How I Handle It: If my gut tells me to leave, I leave. No debating, no justifying. The last thing I need is to become the main character in a bad horror movie.

    3. The ‘Ghosts? Prove Me Wrong’ Rule (I’m Ready for This Fight)

Unlike most people, I don’t fear ghosts, Ouija boards, or haunted places—I’m fascinated by them. Do I believe in spirits and the paranormal? Not really.

But am I willing to test it? Hell yes.

🔹 Example: While some people refuse to step foot in a haunted house, I’m the one saying, “Alright, if something’s here, show yourself.”
🔹 Pain Level: TBD. But honestly, if a ghost did prove me wrong, I’d be more excited than scared.

✅ How I Handle It: If the supernatural wants my attention, it better bring receipts. Until then, I’m keeping my skepticism and my curiosity wide open.

    So, Am I Superstitious?

Let’s put it this way—I don’t live in fear of bad luck, but I also don’t poke the bear (except when it comes to ghosts, apparently).

If knocking on wood, trusting my instincts, and challenging the unknown keeps things interesting, then I’m all in.

    Now, tell me—are you superstitious?

Or are you the type to laugh in the face of fate?

Drop your thoughts in the comments… but if your luck suddenly changes, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

  7. NSFW Ink Dreams: Where Would You Put Yours?

What tattoo do you want, and where would you put it?

Some people want a discreet infinity symbol on their ankle.
Others want angel wings between their shoulder blades.
    Me?

I want the Joker and Harley Quinn… tangled in sin… on my inner thigh.

Yes, you read that right. I already have six tattoos—each one a slice of my story—but this?
This one’s going to be my masterpiece.

Why settle for basic when your thighs are prime real estate for chaos, colour, and the promise of a little danger?

    Why the Inner Thigh, though?

    Well, darling, that’s easy.

    It’s hidden… until it’s not.

It’s intimate. Naughty. A secret meant to be earned.

And every time I cross my legs or shift in bed, I’ll know there’s a beautiful madness resting just beneath my skin.

The Joker, smirking with toxic charm.
Harley, wide-eyed, wild, loyal in all the wrong ways.
The ultimate ride-or-die pair—etched into my flesh, just inches from all the fun.

Honestly? If you’re going to mark your body forever, make it interesting.
Make it tell a story… or whisper one between parted thighs.

More Tattoos. More Mischief. More Me.

My body is already a canvas of secrets and symbols.

    Not just to look.
    But to wonder.
To imagine what else might be hiding underneath the lace and leather.

So, yes—my Joker and Harley thigh piece is still in the works.
But the rest of my skin? Hungry. Ready. Waiting for the needle to tell another scandalous tale.

  8. My Secret Obsession: Dark Romance Audiobooks & The Voices That Make Me Swoon

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

📌Disclaimer: Please note that if you click on any of the links and make a purchase, I will be receiving a small commission at NO extra cost to you📌

What’s Something Most People Don’t Know About Me?

If you asked Chat Ludlow, the commanding king of the dark Fae and richest man on Earth, what most people don’t know about him, he’d probably smirk and say, “Everything. They only see what I let them.”

That, my friends, is what I’m aiming for here—a little mystery, a little intrigue, and a lot of fun.

So, what’s something most people don’t know about me?

Well, I’m not just a dark romance enthusiast—oh no. I’ve got layers, much like Chat’s intricate plans to make Belle his forever (cue the swoon).

My Secret Obsession? Dark Romance Audiobooks 🎧

Yup, you read that right. While I live for crafting my own sizzling stories, I’ve got another obsession that’s just as intense: dark romance audiobooks. And not just any narrators will do—no, no.

My go-tos are the deliciously deep voices of Aiden Snow and Teddy Hamilton.

There’s something about the way they bring the tension, passion, and raw emotion of a story to life that keeps me hooked for hours.

Think of it as the Chat Ludlow experience—dangerous, seductive, and oh-so-intoxicating. Much like Belle, I can’t help but swoon every time those voices take over my headphones.

Just like how Chat’s deep, commanding voice sends Belle into a fluster, audiobooks narrated by these legends have the power to take any romance to the next level.

If you’re not already obsessed, trust me—you’re missing out on the ultimate audio romance experience.

Why Audiobooks? Because They Let You Escape.

Life, much like the worlds Chat and Belle navigate, can get overwhelming.

Between work, life, and the chaos in between, we all need a way to escape. And for me, that’s pressing play on a dark romance audiobook and letting those velvety voices take me into another world.

It’s a bit like falling headfirst into one of Chat’s steamy power games—except this time, it’s Aiden Snow telling me all the dirty details, and I don’t have to lift a finger.

When you listen to Aiden Snow or Teddy Hamilton, it’s like having your very own Chat Ludlow right in your ear, whispering all those dangerously sweet nothings.

What’s not to love? You can dive into a world of Fae kings, ruthless CEOs, and unrelenting passion—all while folding your laundry (because multitasking is key, am I right?).

    Everyone loves a good escape.

Whether you’re listening to a podcast or, like me, you’re falling for a brooding fictional alpha on audio, there’s something magical about immersive experiences.

What This Says About Me (and Chat)

Now, I know what you’re thinking—What does an obsession with dark romance audiobooks have to do with writing or being Chat Ludlow’s obsession?

Well, everything, actually. People expect you to be a certain way based on what you create, but there’s always more beneath the surface.

For example, Chat may come off as a dominant, ruthless man in control of everything, but underneath it all, he’s fiercely in love with Belle—someone who softens his edges and makes him vulnerable.

Similarly, when I’m not writing, I’m melting into the worlds created by my favourite narrators, where love, danger, and passion intertwine in a way that’s just so satisfying.

Your Turn: What Don’t People Know About You?

Okay, now it’s your turn. I’ve spilled my secret—dark romance audiobooks narrated by the dreamy Aiden Snow and Teddy Hamilton. Chef’s kiss, right?

What’s something about you that people don’t expect?

Do you also escape into stories when life gets overwhelming, or is there another secret passion you’re hiding?

Drop a comment below and tell me your favourite audiobook narrator or what surprising hobby you’re obsessed with.

You never know—you might just find a fellow audiobook addict (and I’ll definitely be here fangirling alongside you).

But as the first fiery bite hits your tongue like a flamethrower in a chili factory, you quickly realize that you may have underestimated the true meaning of “Thai spicy.” Cue the frantic gulps of water and the impromptu fire-breathing performance that leaves your fellow diners both impressed and slightly concerned for your well-being.

    2. The Mystery Meat Mishap

You’re feeling adventurous, so when the menu at that quaint little bistro in Paris lists “escargot” as the house specialty, you decide to throw caution to the wind and give it a try. But as you take your first tentative bite of the slimy delicacy, you can’t shake the sinking feeling that you may have just eaten something that was alive mere moments ago. Cue the existential crisis and the fervent vow to stick to more familiar fare for the remainder of your culinary adventures.

    3. The Cultural Conundrum

You’re determined to immerse yourself in the local culture, so when your gracious host in Tokyo presents you with a steaming bowl of what can only be described as “mystery soup,” you graciously accept with a smile and a bow. But as you tentatively take a sip and try to identify the various unidentifiable floating objects, you realize that sometimes, cultural immersion comes with a side of gastrointestinal distress. Cue the polite nods and the silent prayers for a speedy recovery as you struggle to maintain your composure in the face of culinary adversity.

  10. The Red Dirt Audit

The neon sign of the servo flickered against the vast, bruised sky of the Outback, casting a rhythmic, sickly green glow over the red dust. The Three Best Friends—Liam, Dax, and Dev—had been driving for ten hours, their old 4WD chockers with server-grade hardware and a beat-up esky full of lukewarm water. They were performing the ultimate hard yakka: tracking a digital ghost to a physical location.

“Fair dinkum, this place is isolated,” Liam muttered, stepping out into the dry heat. He adjusted his glasses, his mind still racing with the content audit he’d been performing on the fly. He knew that to beat the Raven, they had to be beyond reproach. He had spent the drive ensuring their own documentation followed the most rigorous standards, providing informative, unique page titles for every log entry they created. He knew that for each web page, they needed a short title that described the content and distinguished it from others.

Dax climbed out of the passenger seat, immediately checking his handheld light-meter. “She’ll be right, Liam,” he said, though his eyes were fixed on the servo’s flickering signage. Even here, Dax couldn’t stop being a designer. He noticed the signage lacked sufficient contrast between the foreground and background, a cardinal sin in his book. He knew that foreground text needs to have sufficient contrast with background colors to be readable for people like Elias or Lexie.

    The Terminal in the Dust
Inside the servo, the air was thick with the smell of deep-fryer oil and diesel. In the back corner, next to a rack of faded bathers and fishing lure, sat a heavy, industrial-grade terminal. It was humming with a low-frequency vibration that made the floorboards rattle.

“There it is,” Dev whispered. He moved toward the machine, his fingers already itching to check the code. “The Raven’s physical gateway.”

Dev knew that to dismantle this, he would have to use appropriate mark-up for headings, lists, and tables to understand the machine’s hidden structure. He reached for the keyboard, but stopped. The screen was a nightmare of unnecessarily complex data blocks.

“It’s a trap,” Dev said. “Look at the interface. They haven’t provided clear and consistent navigation options. There’s no site map, no search, just a single, pulsing cursor. It’s designed to make you feel lost”.

    Decoding the Raven’s Form
A form suddenly popped up on the screen, demanding an administrative bypass code. It was a masterpiece of inaccessible design:

The form elements did not include clearly associated labels.

There were no instructions or guidance to help users complete the form.

The input requirement for the date format was not described.

The system used a CAPTCHA that was purely visual, with no audio alternative for someone like Lakshmi.

“You little ripper,” Dax whispered, but not in a good way. “They’re using color alone to convey information here. The ‘Required’ fields are just red boxes with no asterisks or labels. If you can’t see that specific shade of red, you’re stuffed”.

Liam stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. “I can fix the content. Dev, get me into the markup.”

Dev bypassed the visual CAPTCHA by injecting a script that identified the non-text content through its metadata, though the Raven had tried to hide it. As the code bloomed across the screen, the trio saw the “Raven’s” true face. The “Shadow of the Raven’s Wing” was a script that intentionally removed the lang attribute from the html tag, making it impossible for screen readers to identify the primary language of the page.

    The Audit Begins
“We need to audit this and flip it,” Liam commanded. “Dax, check the viewports.”

Dax began testing how the page information presented in different sized viewports. He ensured that when font size was increased by at least 200%, the content didn’t clip or require horizontal scrolling. “The Raven’s site breaks at mobile sizes,” Dax reported. “It’s not responsive design; it’s a digital wall”.

Liam focused on the text. He began rewriting the Raven’s cryptic error messages. Instead of saying “System Error 404-X,” he provided specific, understandable explanations and suggested corrections. He wrote in short, clear sentences and paragraphs, ensuring the information was as simple as possible for the context.

Dev, meanwhile, was doing the hard yakka in the backend. He was ensuring that every interactive element was keyboard accessible, especially the custom-made buttons the Raven had hidden in

tags. He used tabindex=”0″ to add those elements into the navigation order so they could receive focus.

“I’m also adding WAI-ARIA to provide information on the function and state of these custom widgets,” Dev grunted. “The Raven used aria-expanded=”false” on elements that were clearly open. It was a deliberate attempt to confuse assistive technology”.

    The Raven Speaks
Suddenly, the terminal’s speakers crackled to life. It was an audio-only file, a podcast-style message with no transcript provided.

“They’re pulling a swifty,” Liam said, reaching for his headset. “They think because there’s no text, we can’t index the threat.”

“No dramas,” Dev replied. He quickly ran a speech-to-text algorithm, creating a real-time transcript that included not just the spoken information, but also the important sounds—like the distant caw of a bird in the background.

The transcript read: “You think you’re clever with your WCAG guidelines. But the desert doesn’t care about meaningful sequence. The sand doesn’t have a logical reading order. You’re carrying on like a pork chop in a world that has already moved past you”.

    The Counter-Strike
The Three Best Friends didn’t flinch. They knew that providing easily identifiable feedback was the key to a successful interaction. They weren’t going to let the Raven’s unnecessarily technical language stop them.

“Dev, use the progressive enhancement strategy,” Liam said. “Ensure the core functionality is available regardless of the technology the Raven is using to block us.”

Dax added whitespace and proximity to the new interface they were building over the Raven’s ruins, making the relationships between the content more apparent. He styled the headings to group the related content, reducing clutter and making it easier for the next person who stumbled upon this servo to understand what was happening.

As the sun began to rise over the Outback, the terminal finally let out a long, defeated beep. The “Shadow” was lifted. The form now had clearly associated labels for every control. The images had meaningful text alternatives. The link text was meaningful, describing exactly where the user would go next.

“Good on ya, team,” Liam said, wiping sweat from his brow. “We just turned a ‘rejected status’ claim into a fully approved, accessible reality”.

“But the Raven is still out there,” Dev reminded them, pointing to a set of coordinates that had just appeared on the screen, marked clearly with a descriptive label. “And it looks like the next stop is an abandoned opal mine.”

Liam looked at his friends, then back at the esky. “Well, it’s going to be a long drive. But she’ll be right”.

  11. Chapter 1: The High-Contrast Crisis

The rain outside didn’t just fall; it “carried on like a pork chop,” hammering against the corrugated iron roof of the studio. Inside, the air smelled of burnt espresso and ozone. Liam, Dax, and Dev—the Three Best Friends—were locked in a battle against a deadline that felt like hard yakka on a Saturday arvo.

    The Philosophy of the Studio

The trio didn’t just build websites; they built gateways. Their manifesto was simple: Writing for Web Accessibility wasn’t an afterthought—it was the foundation.

    • Liam (The Content King): He believed that for each web page, one must provide a short title that describes the page content and distinguishes it from other pages. He was currently obsessing over the “Space Teddy Inc.” homepage, ensuring the page name came before the organization name.
    • Dax (The Visual Architect): His monitors were filled with color wheels and luminance grids. He knew that foreground text needs to have sufficient contrast with background colors, a rule that applied to buttons and background gradients alike.
    • Dev (The Logic Master): Dev lived in the “code order.” He was currently ensuring that the order of elements in the code matched the logical order of the information presented. He often checked this by removing CSS styling to see if the content still made sense.

“If we don’t get this right,” Dev muttered, “we’re just pulling a swifty on every user who relies on a screen reader”.

    The Arrival of Elias

When the thud came at the door, it wasn’t the sound of a visitor; it was the sound of a warning. Elias, a retiree known to the boys as a frequent tester of their designs, stood in the doorway. He was a man who lived with low vision, hand tremors, and mild short-term memory loss.

“I couldn’t get through the ‘Space Teddy’ checkout,” Elias panted, his voice shaking. “It was the Shadow of the Raven’s Wing. It’s back.”

Dax went pale. “The Shadow? That’s just a myth developers tell to scare juniors.”

“It’s no myth,” Elias said, leaning on a desk. “It’s a deliberate design to exclude. It’s when a site uses color alone to convey information, like marking required fields in red without an asterisk”. “But this was worse. It was a shroud.”

The Mystery of the Raven’s Wing

The Three Best Friends gathered around Liam’s main terminal. Elias pointed a weathered finger at a specific block of text that seemed to shimmer and fade.

The Raven’s Wing (Definition): A technique used by rogue developers to create “unnecessarily complex” content that bypasses the need for clear and concise sentences. It creates a “lack of headings,” making the document nearly impossible to edit or navigate for assistive technology.

“Look at the code,” Dev whispered. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. “They haven’t just ignored the WCAG requirements. They’ve weaponized them. They’re using ambiguous link text like ‘click here’ to lead users into a loop”.

“And the images,” Dax added, his eyes narrowing. “There’s no meaningful text alternatives. For these informational images, they’ve used empty alt-text as if they were purely decorative”.

The First Clue: The “Superbear” Anomaly

As they dug deeper into the “Raven’s” source code, a name popped up that Liam recognized from a recent news article: Superbear.

“Wait,” Liam said, pulling up a local news site. “I just wrote about this. ‘Superbear saves the day… rescuing a young cat from a tree'”. He looked at the code Dev had unearthed. “The Raven is using the Superbear story as a mask. But look at how they’ve marked it up.”

    Dev pointed to the screen:

    • They used a <h2> for the title “Superbear saves the day”.
    • They included a <time> tag for “7 Aug 2015”.
    • But hidden inside an <aside> was a list of “Related Articles” that didn’t exist in the real world.

“Fair dinkum,” Liam breathed. “These links… ‘Superbear stands for mayor’. That never happened. They’re using WAI-ARIA roles like role="search" to hide a data-mining script”.

    The Friends’ Vow

The “Shadow of the Raven’s Wing” wasn’t just a technical glitch; it was a digital wall built to stop people like Lakshmi, the blind accountant, and Ian, the clerk with autism, from accessing the truth.

“We need to audit this entire city’s infrastructure,” Dax declared. “Starting with the contrast ratios of every government portal”.

“And I’ll start rewriting the instructions,” Liam said. “No more unnecessarily technical language. We need to describe input requirements, like date formats, so even someone as stressed as Elias can navigate ‘no worries'”.

“I’ll handle the keyboard accessibility,” Dev added. “I’ll ensure every custom widget, from accordions to buttons, uses tabindex="0" to stay in the navigation order”.

They looked at each other. The task was heaps big, but they were the best in the business.

    The Audit Checklist

Before they could head out into the “arvo” to confront the Raven, they had to prep their toolkit.

ToolPurposeContrast CheckerTo identify “insufficient” contrast that hides text.Screen ReaderTo hear the “info and relationships” hidden in the markup.Responsive DebuggerTo see how the “Raven’s” site adapts to a “narrow mobile phone”.Aussie GritTo ensure they don’t “pull a swifty” on their mission.

“She’ll be right,” Elias whispered, watching the Three Best Friends work. “As long as you keep the content clear and concise, the shadow can’t win”.

    To Be Continued…

  12. My New Year’s Eve – 2025

    Related Posts:

    31st December 2025. I was NOT oncall.

It was a Wednesday and it was a normal working day. Hence, at 7:45am, I left to work as usual and was there by 8am. It was the New Year’s Eve. I thought that maybe, just maybe, there would be less patients in the clinic.

The day started off smoothly. Surprisingly, there were many patients who came for their follow up followed by additional patients (the defaulters and walk-ins) but it was manageable. We went about our day, seeing each patient and when lunch time came, we went for our lunch break.

At 2pm, we went about our work, seeing patients as usual and I was taking my time with each patient. The patient load in the afternoon shift was lower compared to the morning shift and both my colleagues were done with their patient load.

Suddenly, a staff nurse barged into my room saying that there is a massive accident that just occurred nearby, 2 patients were already brought in and 2 more were on their way. They called in all available doctors (which were only the three of us) to help out.

I told my colleagues to head out and help out first while I rushed through the consultation of my final patient. After that, I rushed to the tiny Emergency Room of the clinic. My colleague who was oncall on that day was already attending to a child. I went over to the other patient, an old lady and did my primary survey and fast scan.

She was desaturating badly under room air and needed oxygen support. She had an open skull fracture, multiple abrasion and laceration wounds over her face, upper and lower limbs as well as rib fractures and on top of that, her left leg appears shortened and she has a closed fracture over her right lower limb.

I didn’t think that we should proceed with an x-ray at our clinic even if we had the facility at that time, the best would be to send them straight away to the hospital because she could deteriorate further any time. Thankfully, her GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) was full.

I was focused on my patient, stabilising while referring her to the specialists of various specialities as well as the emergency physician that when I finally got ready to transfer her out that I noticed the child that my other colleague was attending to. The child’s right arm was crushed and the distal limb of his right arm was pale and his right lung was obvious till mid-chest.

Just how in the world is he still awake? The poor child was crying out in pain…

Judging by the state of his and my patient’s injuries, it was definitely high impact.

The story was, the whole family were travelling back from Miri to Kuching. Both the parents were sitting in front and the father was driving whilst the two children and their grandmother were sitting at the back.

The father claimed that he was not speeding but as he was about to make a u-turn at a junction, he claimed to have hit the curb and the car turned many times into the other lane before finally stopping and the grandmother and one of the child were thrown out of the car.

It sounded like a very high impact collision. Thankfully, the parents and the other child were well and unscathed.

We had to transfer both patients in two separate ambulances to the Red Zone of the Emergency Department at Hospital Bintulu as one ambulance could only transport one patient at a time.

Upon arriving, I met my colleague and friend at the Red Zone of the hospital. After we have handed over to the medical officers and specialist in the Emergency Department, we headed back together. However, upon reaching back, there was another patient who came in who was extremely tachypnoiec.

Oh, here we go again… Another Red Zone referral…

We stabilised the patient and referred her to hospital again. The clock was already showing 10pm when we left. The journey to the hospital takes about 45 minutes to an hour for each journey and the both of us have yet to have our dinner. This time, I choose to accompany her for the referral, mainly for emotional support and also in hopes of stopping by McDonald’s to get a takeout.

Yes, we did stop by McDonalds after sending the patient safely to the hospital and yes, we used the ambulance and went through drive-through.

By the time we left, it was already 11pm. The journey takes around 45 minutes to an hour and it was raining heavily. At this point, I was wondering if we would end up celebrating New Year’s in the ambulance.

Me and my friend ate in the ambulance on the way back while we joked and exchange oncall stories. Thankfully, we reached a little before midnight. The day was completely unexpected, not to mention tiring but it was nice to have spent it with a friend.

It’s still the beginning of 2026, so if I’m not too late, Happy New Year!

If you are travelling anytime soon or in the future, do drive safely, stay within speed limits especially if it is raining. Remember to get your car and tyres checked before any long distance journey and NEVER drive under the influence.

    Stay safe always!

  13. 12 Hours Shift – Counting Down My Hours Each Time At Work

    Related Posts:

How do you waste the most time every day?

At the time of writing this article, which was back in June 2025, I was going through my 6th Rotation of my Housemanship which is in the Department of Emergency and Trauma. As a House Officer in the Emergency Department, we go by the 12-hours shift.

This meant, our shift is from:

    • AM Shift: 7am till 7pm
    • PM Shift: 10am till 10pm
    • Night Shift: 10pm till 10am

    In this department, they are strict in regards to adhering to a minimum of 60 hours per week in total. Thus, in a week, our schedule is as follows;

    • A total of at least 4 daytime shifts (AM or PM Shifts)
    • One night shift
    • One off day

That is provided one has off-tagged of course.

Perhaps, it is the “last paper syndrome” that I was experiencing being in the 6th and final rotation, I would be counting down my hours each day at work. Thus, upon arrival at work, I would start my “12-hours countdown“ on my phone.

On slow days, I made it a point to go to toilet every hour, technically my so-called “hourly break” whereas on busy days, the toilet break is the only time I could take a break. This is followed by ensuring I have at least one meal per day during my shift.

Otherwise, the schedule in the emergency department is relatively better as compared to my previous rotations. Nevertheless, the tiredness is still there.

  14. Reflection: 2 Months As A Floating Medical Officer

    Related Posts:

At the time of writing this article, I’m on leave which I took from the 1st of October till 15th of October, which my Head of Department (HOD) was more than kind enough to allow.

I needed the break, perhaps it was an adjustment disorder on my side but I was struggling. Physically, I caught up, I showed up and I was there but mentally, I felt left behind and lost and on most days, I was low.

Perhaps, it was out of tiredness as I have just recently off-tagged and in combination with my low mood, I felt demotivated and in general, felt that I have lost my love for medicine. I decided then that clinical life in the hospital was not for me. True, we were lacking doctors in various departments and hospitals in general across Malaysia. However, during that time, even if there enough manpower, I don’t think I would still want to continue.

I tried looking on the bright side, tiny things as well as the positive aspects of things to help me to get through the day.

Firstly, I’m thankful to be in a subspeciality department instead of the bigger and more hectic departments, I think I would have broken down within the first week itself. Secondly, I was in the department with the sweetest and kindest bosses who were more than happy to teach or lend a helping hand when needed. We are small in number, yes. But it felt like being part of a family.

I was happy, the environment was good, kind and non-toxic. However, mentally, I knew that this is not my place.

This further saddens me as I have always looked forward to being part of this lovely department. Yet, I knew, it’s just a matter of time before I slip and broke down. My body knew that I wouldn’t last long here nor do I foresee myself handling the complex and complicated cases here. If my interest is not here, how would I even make it through to specialise?

Amidst the business and my mind and body trying to keep up with the steep learning curve place before me, I was unable to view my options or to consider other departments.

I was just done in general and sadly, I wouldn’t be able to fulfil my quote in my medical school yearbook, I feel myself losing my will every single day nor do I find the strength within myself to serve.

Sadly,“sometimes what we like is not necessarily what is suited for us”, a fellow colleague told me and that hit me hard. I had no interest in other departments either or practicing in general at that point. All I could think of at that point was to quit and to hand in my resignation letter. After all, I have successfully completed my 2 years of internship / housemanship training. I can still locum if I wanted to. But of course, I didn’t enjoy it either. All I was ever passionate of was to teach. Thus, I considered changing my field and entering university as a lecturer did not sound appealing either as I did not like research at all.

Thus, after much contemplation, I approached my Head of Department (HOD) to validate my 30-day-resignation letter. My HOD is another kind soul who enquired to know what prompted me to come to such a decision. She signed my papers but advised me to consider changing departments instead of quitting.

However, at that time and at that current state of mind, I was fixed on my decision. Hence, the following week on a Monday, I submitted my 30-Days-Notice of Resignation, only to have it retracted the following day. Although I have handed in my 30-Days-Notice, a part of me felt a tinge of regret and sadness. Somehow, some part of me did not want to leave but I could not see any way out of this virtual box that I appear to be caged in.

My colleague and my parents played an important role in my decision to retract my resignation. Instead, despite my limited amount of leaves left for the rest of the year, I chose to take some time of work. Perhaps it was due to tiredness that contributed to my rash and impulsive decision.

On the 1st of October 2025, I took the first flight out and then throughout my leaves, I locummed at several General Practitioners. Remember when I said that I did not like locum either? This time, I decided to give it a second try and to keep an open mind.

The first GP I locummed at was a rather chill one with only 3 cases being seen throughout the whole day. The subsequent GPs were hectic and had multiple procedures, literally from the beginning of my shift till the end. In all of those times, I was the only doctor in the clinic. In my previous experiences, I have locummed at clinics which had 2-3 resident doctors.

Honestly, I don’t know how I managed to pull it off. Despite the hecticness and the patient load, I found myself looking forward to return and I enjoyed talking, listening and consulting the patients. It was fun. Slowly, I found myself enjoying and falling back in love with medicine and practicing medicine and thinking on how I could improve myself to serve better.

Then, I realised, perhaps venturing into family medicine might not be such a bad thing. True, there is abundant of family medicine doctors now and lack of doctors practicing in the hospital but that doesn’t mean that they are still not needed. Sadly, as much as I want to force myself to carry on and stay practicing in the hospital, I knew that it is not meant for me in the long haul or for me to last for even a year.

The opportunity to specialise is there but how can I continue if I can’t even see myself as one, or even have the inspiration?

Suddenly, the plan and my pathway seems clearer and I’m more than ecstatic to embark on my next journey. It was definitely the rest that I needed. To think and to reflect. If I were to stick to this journey, how can I do so for the long haul and at the same time, enjoy it?

I hope that in months or years to come, the decision to stay is the right choice. Perhaps, I still need time to discover my interest in this vast field. At times, I wish that it can be simple and that I would know what or which department I’m fitted to or destined to specialise in.

  15. My First Day As A Medical Officer In KKM

    Related Posts:

Housemanship or Internship for Doctors in Malaysia lasts for a duration of 2 years, upon completion of our medical school journey.

For some, they began shortly upon graduation whilst for others, they took a gap year.

I submitted my application to pursue my internship in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia (Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, KKM) shortly after my graduation but did not actually begin till 6 months later in 2023. Two years later, thankfully, I’ve completed and fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and possess a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC).

Post housemanship, I went on a 3-weeks-break and on the 21st of August 2025, I reported for duty as a Medical Officer.

Upon my completion of housemanship, one would have to go through a “floating period” of maximum 6 months prior to receiving their placement in whichever department, hospital or state of choice. Usually, the floating period occurs in the same hospital that one had completed their housemanship or internship in.

Thankfully, I was offered to float in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. However, I was diving into the world of Surgery with no experience or knowledge in basic suturing.

During my first day, I reported for duty at the Hospital Director’s Office to receive my “floating” placement letter, checked my remaining leaves and proceeded to Burn Ward of Sarawak General Hospital.

    The Burn Ward.

I’ve had good memories previously as a House Officer here and I was beyond ecstatic as well as relieved to be accepted into this department which is filled with understanding and helpful bosses.

I was then given orientation by one of the medical officers, clerked a burn patient that was just admitted and spent most of my time accompanying a fellow friend who thankfully is in the same department. Considering it was my first day and a rather slow one, I was able to return home at 5pm.

There’s just so much more that I have yet to learn. Hopefully, I’ll have both the mental and physical strength to push through.

Thankfully, the environment is one that is filled with love and encouragement.

  16. My First Day Of Locum And As A Medical Officer

    Related Posts:

A locum or locum tenens, is a person who temporarily fulfils the duties of another; the term is especially used for physicians or clergy.

    – Wikipedia.

The first time I ever tasted or ventured into locum or a so-called “part-time doctor” was on the 3rd of August 2025.

At that time, I was back in my hometown and on a 3-weeks-break post housemanship / internship at a small private clinic, yet to officially begin as a Medical Officer.

While I was in medical school, I would occasionally hear this term “locum” from my fellow seniors or batch mates, lecturers, parents or even friends of my parents. However, in order to locum, one would need to be fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and possess a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC). In short, I had to graduate medical school, finish my internship or housemanship first, then only am I able to dive into this.

Thus, upon acquiring my full MMC and APC licence, I was looking forward to locum. Looking forward to it as well as nervous to dive into this. Thankfully, I had just completed my final rotation in the Emergency and Trauma Department.

In the Emergency and Trauma Department, there are various zones in which the patients would be triaged into in terms of presenting complaints, severity and their vital signs. The least critical in severity would be triaged into Green zone. The Green zone is similar to a clinic setting, thus, it gave me some idea on the type of cases I would be expecting.

My first locum was just 3 hours long, from 7pm till 10pm. I figured that since I am just starting at that time, it would be better to start with minimal hours in order to get used to it and also.. if I would enjoy it.

The clinic was quaint and small but equipped with basic necessities and a scan machine. The only thing that it did not have, was an x-ray facility. The moment I sat down, the patients kept coming back-to-back. As soon as I was done with one, another came.

For a first-timer, I felt it was equivalent to the Green Zone in General Hospital whereby the cases were always there but the patient load was manageable.

    However, I was extremely scared.

Mainly afraid that I might accidentally jeopardise the patient’s safety in terms of mismanagement. Thankfully, by 9:30 pm, the clinic assistant stopped accepting new patients and prepared to close the clinic.

For a first experience, it was a good one despite it being rather terrifying for me.

But, we all have to start somewhere and build our confidence, don’t we?

  17. Life After Offtag In Emergency & Trauma | Housemanship Diaries

    Related Posts:

The tagging hours in the Department of Emergency & Trauma is from 7am till 10pm, for a total of 10 days and one off day per week. There are no assessments required to off-tag, only hours required to cash in.

During our tagging season, we were not allocated for night shifts as well.

For me, tagging in this posting felt like an eternity. I remembered counting down my days before I would finally “offtag” and be switched to regular working hours. I also remembered being extremely exhausted at the end of my shift, wondering how did my fellow colleagues managed to pull through.

Tagging in this posting as compared to the other postings was considered less stressful as we were not required to arrive early for morning rounds. We merely had to arrive on time and upon the end of our shift, we leave, as compared to other postings where we would stay back almost every time, cash in “unpaid overtimes.”

Finally after 10 days of tagging, I officially “off-tagged“.

So how was life after that?

    Much better. Thankfully.

Regular hours in the Emergency & Trauma Department meant working a 12-hours shift per day with an off day per week and a single night shift.

Basically, we had to ensure that in total, we had to meet the total 60-hours shift per week.

Thus are the timings for our respective shifts:

    • AM Shift: 7am – 7pm
    • PM Shift: 10am – 10pm
    • Night Shift: 10pm – 10am

If you have read my articles on “The Joy Of Working The Night Shift As A House Officer” as well as “My Favourite Time Of The Day At Work“, I mentioned that I absolutely love the night shift. The disadvantage of working the night shift is that we are usually alone and the night shift can be rather unpredictable.

However, it is not the same for me in this posting. Out of the shifts listed above, my favourite is the AM shift, 7am till 7pm. Initially, getting up for work at 7am is tough especially after working the PM shifts back-to-back. But after the initial morning sleepiness wears off, the day proceeds as usual and we return home at 7pm which is nice.

Life after offtag in this department ensured that I had adequate rest prior to my shift starting. No doubt, it is a 12-hours shift every time, we usually arrive and leave work on time as compared to other postings.

Nonetheless, I was still exhausted after every shift. Perhaps it was due to the accumulated mental and physical stress throughout the previous five postings that when I am finally blessed with extra rest, I am still tired.

If you are still in the tagging phase, be it in this department or others, please stay strong. Remember that it doesn’t last forever, it is merely over a certain span of days or weeks.

Keep showing up, keep doing the good work to the best of your strength and abilities and keep moving forward.

  18. Overcoming My Fear To Refer A Case I DO NOT KNOW | Housemanship Diaries

Click here for more articles & daily dose.

What fears have you overcome and how?

At the moment of writing this article, I am in my sixth and final rotation which is in the Department of Emergency Medicine, pushing into my third month.

One might think that as we become more senior in our current job, it gets easier or the fear fades.

Well, the anxiety certainly reduces but that does not mean that it disappears.

For me, the fear is still there as to who I would be working with or who I would be referring to and most of all, referring a case that I not know.

I’m sure we’ve all been there before. Especially upon arrival to work and to be absolutely clueless about the patient and their case and progress and to not have anyone handover the case to you.

Not that we won’t take the time to understand. It is just that, we will or at least I would take the time to digest the initial presentation, clinical examination and findings followed by the initial management of the patient and other teams as well as the current progress.

Once I have finally understood the issue of the patient from A to Z, then I can confidently refer the patient for a simple thing.

That’ll usually take me about 5-10 minutes, especially if there is just one too many writing. To others that may seem like an eternity.

The thing is they will somewhat give me a template of what to say in regards to the patient but I am still absolutely clueless and wishes to kindly absorb the pages and information about the patient before I walk into the battlefield.

This is because, one too many times, I will be asked about things totally irrelevant to the case of the patient which will take me some time and if I’m not so lucky, ended up being shouted at. I mean, that’s the worst that can happen right? Certainly reminds me of my early days of housemanship.

Maybe it’s a form of childhood trauma or maybe not, but I need to at least have a reason to defend myself and the patient.

It’s like a debate or a business deal which I find that I may need to fib or exaggerate myself in order to get a test approved or to refer, all for the sake of the patient or sometimes the superiors.

It’s alright but at times it can be rather annoying especially when they want it done in a minutes time.

The next that I have to actually open my mouth and communicate. Being an introvert, I can easily talk to people but I dislike being in groups, small talks or actually talking at times.

I find it exhausting and thus upon the end of my shift, I just need time to recuperate.

However, back to the question of this article, my fear, to refer to other departments, especially, if it is a case I do not know and to a tiger of a person who loves finding any fault just to reject the case is still present to this day and what have I done to overcome it? Nothing, really, just extreme patience.

  19. Part 2 – Life As A Peri Medical House Officer In Hospital Umum Sarawak | Main Building, Side Building, Infectious Disease Ward

    2. Main Building
    3. Side Building
    4. Infectious Disease Ward
    5. SDC (Surgical Daycare)

In this article, I will be sharing my experiences as a Perimedical House Officer covering main building, side building, SDC as well as the Infectious Disease (ID) ward.

As I previously mentioned in my previous article, the work begins from 7am till 6pm (short days), 7am till 10pm (long days) and 8am till 9am (night shifts).

Covering this part of the hospital meant taking care of “stranded patients” which are medical patients who are lodging in other department wards as there are no space or beds available in the main medical wards. Usually, patients like these are somewhat stable enough to be left on their own without constant supervision. Those that do require, are usually left in the Emergency Department or transferred straight to medical wards.

    The Main Building

Taking care of the Main Building meant that one would have to cover:

On some days, there would not be any perimedical patients in certain wards. Thus, there are days that we do not have to go to these wards. On bad days, there are perimedical patients on every floor and the patient count will be extremely high.

During my time serving in the main building, I was blessed enough to have a partner. Thus, despite the high volume of patients, it felt manageable.

Upon my arrival, I usually begin from the highest floor and work my way down. Thus, I begin from the 7th floor by checking with the TL or Team Leader to identify new cases and update the list followed by tracing the blood investigations.

This is to ensure that the patients are not missed during rounds.

I proceed with doing this in the wards of every floor till I am done prior to beginning my morning reviews.

Usually by then, the Medical Officers have arrived and are proceeding with their morning reviews.

Sometimes, we join in and sometimes, we are asked to review the other patients and on our own until the specialist arrives.

Upon the specialist’s arrival, we would all meet up at one place to begin out rounds.

Rounds in perimedical is similar to that in the ward. The only difference is that rounds are once daily and the patients are all around the place.

In between, there would be new transfer ins, attending to acute issues of which the nurses from other wards would call or inform the House Officers from other departments.

After that, it is followed by preparation of the coming morning bloods. The wards and bed numbers are labelled on top of the forms and kept in the ETD for the night House Officers to take.

    The Side Building

The Side Building is less hectic than main building and that meant we had to cover:

As usual, upon my arrival, I would begin at the topmost floor and check for any new patients as well as to trace the bloods.

After all of it is done, I begin my review in the ICU Extension 2 Ward. The ICU Extension 2 ward consists of unstable, intubated patients of various departments.

Usually by the time I begin my morning review, the specialist would have just arrived and we begin our rounds.

After the ICU Extension 2 is followed by Neurosurgical Ward since they are located at the same place, then Neurosurgical HDU.

Upon completion of morning rounds is followed by carrying out the active joblists, discharges and requesting for radiological scans.

Similar to Main Building, the coming morning bloods are prepped and kept at the Emergency Department for the night house officers to collect.

    SDC – Surgical Day Care

SDC is the Surgical Day Care as per the name. Usually patients who are admitted here come in on the day of the procedure itself and is discharged in the evening.

However, when the wards are fully occupied and the Emergency Department is overflowing with stranded patients, the SDC converts temporarily to host the stranded patients.

At max, the patient load is only two cubicles full and the patients being admitted there are usually relatively stable.

Similar to main building and side building, I begin my day with tracing the bloods, x-rays or any relevant radiologist reports before beginning my review and rounds with the medical officer and specialists.

    The Infectious Disease Ward

The Infectious Disease Ward or “ID Ward” is located in a building separate from the main or side building.

Previously, it used to be the House Officer’s Accommodation. However, it was subsequently converted into a ward.

The ward consists of two floors with each floor containing 6 isolation rooms for each floor. Upon entering the ward itself, one has to change into the hospital scrubs and prior entering the ward isolation rooms, one has to don apron, shower cap and gloves, the standard PPE.

The casenotes are not allowed to be brought in, thus all reviews are written outside.

What do I do if I were stationed to at the Infectious Disease Ward?

The house officer allocated to the ID ward are those from the Peri Pool, meaning our shift is from 7am till 6pm for short days.

Thus, upon my arrival, I would change into the hospital scrubs. Then, I would proceed to trace the bloods. The bloods sent from the ID ward are usually late. Thus. It would either be pending in the system or yet to be in the system.

Next, I will begin my reviews, first to the newly transferred in patients followed by the rest while awaiting the medical officer.

There is a whiteboard consisting of the names of the patients in the isolation rooms. Usually in the morning prior to entering the isolation rooms, we would have a short round and presentation with the ID consultant with the whiteboard.

Thus, during my time there, I would constantly update and personalise it according to my style which would be easier for me during my presentation with the ward consultant.

After that, we will all proceed to the isolation room. As House Officers, we are the scribe and assistants of the medical officers. Since, we are not allowed to bring the casenotes into the isolation room, thus we will type everything inside our phone and transfer it onto paper after our grand rounds with the patients.

Rounds at the Infectious Disease Ward is only once daily.

After the completion of rounds, just like any ward is the completion of active joblist.

Personally, I enjoyed my time in the Infectious Disease Ward a lot, mainly because I was given the autonomy to customise the board as I liked, present to the consultant myself and was asked multiple questions during rounds and having discussions which I find rather stimulating and enjoyable.

On top of that, I even had time to return home for a quick lunch every time I was stationed at this ward.

In the afternoon, some patients on high oxygen support may need arterial blood gases (ABGs) at certain time. If not, it is the preparation of coming morning bloods and transfer ins of any new patients.

Being in charge of the other places is considerably less hectic than being allocated in the Yellow Zone which can get rather crazy at times as there is massive movement of patients constantly. It actually feels like as if I am at KL Sentral during peak hours.

However, do not fear if you are allocated into the Peri Medical Pool. The workload can get extremely hectic and it can be rather messy. But, always try your best to learn as much as you can during your period serving there and to enjoy your journey.

  20. My Evening Routine In The Medical Posting | Housemanship Diaries

    Related Posts:

On most days in the Medical Posting, at least in the hospital that I’m practicing in, we are allocated to work the “Short Day” or “SD” shifts.

“Short Days” last till 6pm. Occasionally, we would have to work the “Long Day” shift or “LD” which lasts till 10pm or “on-night” which is the night shift.

On days where I’m allocated to work the short day shift, I try to leave work by 6pm. Most of the time, it is feasible while on some days, it is not so.

However, my evening routine is pretty much the same upon returning home irregardless of the time I leave work.

    1. Preparing My Dinner

I love to cook. However, considering I live alone, the meals that I prepare are usually many for one person. Thus, I would keep the extra, rendering me an extra meal prepped for a day or two.

Depending on my mood as well, should I be working the morning shift the following morning and I’m just too exhausted after work and there is no food, I would go for my regular comfort food, instant noodles.

My version of instant noodles involves sautéing chopped onions, curry leaves, mushrooms and diced chilli before adding the water and mixing the instant sachet powders into the broth. I usually add additional curry powder as I like the broth of my instant noodles to be extra soupy and not dry. Once it has come to a boil, I would crack two eggs into the gravy and boil it for a minute or two before adding “half” of the instant noodles and finally topping with some leafy vegetables.

Yes, that’s right, I only consume half. My instant noodles are extra soupy and has less noodles.

Partly because I love adding rolled oats into my broth, thus the whole meal would be too heavy for me if I were to eat all the noodles.

What do I do with the other half of the uncooked noodles?

I keep it and usually comes in handy if I were to cook stir fried noodles.

Photo by Amar Preciado on Pexels.com

Then, there are evenings where I’m filled with energy and the following day happened to be an allocated off day or my night shift, allowing me to cook something different.

Nevertheless, irregardless of my dish of choice for the evening, I would always prepare a set of chopped tofu and mushrooms which I would marinade with some oil, salt, crushed black peppers, diced chilli, slides garlic, curry leaves and some curry powder or chilli powder prior to air frying it.

Thus, by the end of 10 minutes, my dinner would usually be ready.

    2. Resetting My Room

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

I don’t go through a major spring cleaning in the evenings, just simple tiny actions to reset my room back to an “acceptable” state.

This includes folding my clothes and keeping them back in my cupboard and their designated places, taking out the trash and vacuuming.

Considering I wash my hair every morning prior going to work, there would be strands of hairs on the floor after drying my hair and dusts and tiny debris begins to gather. Thus, I would vacuum almost every evening.

Since I live in a studio apartment, this action is merely a 5 minute job.

    3. Preparation For The Next Day

Photo by Alena Darmel on Pexels.com

“Your morning begins the night before.”

I’ve forgotten where I’ve heard this but it’s what I’ve been practicing since I was a kid. Usually the night before, I would know of the set of clothes that I would be wearing the following day.

Next, I would prepare my jars of cold coffee. I usually save up spaghetti glass bottles or jam bottles to keep my tea or coffees or sometimes to be even used as drinking glasses.

I usually carry two 1.5L of flasks to work, one of it contains green tea and the other, my special prepped coffee.

After all of that is done, next would be…

    4. Unwinding for the Day

Photo by KATRIN BOLOVTSOVA on Pexels.com

This begins with me pampering myself with a hot long bath to wash myself of the stench and tiredness of the day, followed by donning myself in a soft, flowy night dress and going about my self-care nighttime routine.

Only after that would I have dinner as I usually fall into a state of food coma after eating.

This is then followed by me clearing the dishes for the last time and finally, heading to bed, which on some days, would be as early as 8pm. However, on average, it is usually around 9-10pm.

This is my evening routine in my Fifth Posting, the Department of Medical, as a House Officer thus far.

I often get questioned by my fellow colleagues as to why I would even consider cooking considering that there are a lot of steps or effort that goes into the process.

However, I do not find it tiring at all as it is my version of de-stressing.

Nothing calms my mind more than listening to music or putting a good show on Netflix while going about my dinner preparations with my phone in “Do Not Disturb” or “Sleep” mode.

  21. Surviving A Month Of Tagging In My Fourth Posting – Surgery | Housemanship Diaries

    Related Posts:

I tagged for almost a month here.

The tagging timing in the Surgical Posting is from 7am till 10pm which is same as with other postings, except Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G).

In the Surgical Posting, we all have to complete a compulsory 14-Day-Tagging period irregardless of having “off-tagged”. Entering the Surgical Department as a senior or fourth poster, we are allocated to special shifts such as night shifts in ward or night shifts in ethe emergency department (ETD).

This serves as an advantage to us seniors as we do not have to work the morning shift for one week straight prior to having an off day. It is also better as it allows us to recuperate in between by not having to go to work extremely early.

However, the disadvantage is that our tagging period is somewhat extended.

As I mentioned before, we are required to complete a 14-Day-Tagging period. The night shift is not counted. Hence, the tagging duration can go up to 3 weeks.

For me, it extended up to 4 weeks due to my medical leaves (MC).

During my first week of tagging, I took a day of medical leave due to extreme fatigue and in the second week, I took 3 days of medical leaves due to extreme fatigue and COVID-19.

At the time of writing this article, I am on a 6 weeks medical leave due to my ATFL injury.

Sometimes I wonder, if I will ever exit this posting and proceed with my last which is medical.

Back to the tagging part, thus my tagging period lasted for a month.

Going to work as a tagger, I would leave home around 5:45am – 6am. Partly because I’m just tired and felt like I needed more rest because there will always be an active issue in ward and I am only able to return home at 10pm.

In the evening around 7pm, I would go for dinner after handing over to the night colleagues and completing my tasks and on-call reviews for the day. Most of the time, it would be our first meal of the day.

Some days, we would be done by 8-9pm and on some days, earlier. Most of us, upon completing, would head for dinner and head home or to just head home straightaway.

This is wrong of course but we were simply exhausted and burnt-out during the tagging period. Thus, we grab the opportunity while we could.

Towards the end of my tagging period, I started bringing packed dinner boxes and reheating them as work prior going back.

Surviving the tagging period in the Surgical Posting was hard and tiring but eventually, it did came to an end.

Thus, if you have yet to enter the Surgical Posting, the tagging period is indeed tiring as with any posting. However, try to learn as much as you can and take comfort in the fact that it does come to an end.

  22. Do you remember life before the internet?

Warning: Slight mention of an attempt at CSA

I usually use writing prompts whenever I can’t fully think of something concrete that I want to write about. I would like to write a short story, or a series of short stories, but story-crafting takes a lot more energy than just typing words. Despite how much of it I have in drafts.

But, today’s prompt, is about a topic I can actually speak on. Why? Well, yesterday, I just turned thirty-nine. Yes. I was born in 1985. I have … glimmers of a memory of a time before we were all connected.

I remember sitting with my brothers as a child, a very young child, in front of a large wooden television. You know, the ones with the tube inside of them. And we’d be playing Super Mario Brothers together. It was a little house on the road down in New Jersey, and we had a neighbor who liked to skate on his long-board. Heck, I remember that house specifically, because every room was connected by doors in a circle, and you could run through it in seconds. But, I’m not writing this to recollect on the layout of a house I lived in toward the end of the eighties.

My Dad was a radio DJ, and there were things he needed at home to do his job. One of those things, was one of the first home computers you could get in the late eighties and early nineties. Now, I’m aware there were even older computers you could get or have, but I’m talking a DOS machine, that dialed into bulletin boards so that you could share your thoughts on a topic.

That was the extent of the internet we had when I was only five years old.

Before that, I don’t remember a lot. I just know that what my brothers and I did consisted of simply using our imaginations, playing videogames that were not online, heck, they didn’t even save our progress. And looking back at it now, it’s hard to imagine or grasp how I didn’t go nuts not having the entire world at my fingertips. But I didn’t! I was a kid.

I remember in another house, in the same state, one of my favorite cartoons were the Ninja Turtles, and we wouldn’t even dress up like them, we’d just run around the streets of the neighborhood pretending we were fighting crime. Yeah, I remember all of that. I remember the large gash in my forehead when I accidentally ran directly into the side-view mirror of a car.

But then you had the nineties, and I can’t really say fully that this was with the absence of the internet, because it was there, and it was in our house. But it wasn’t some interconnected thing where you logged on and spent hours babbling about politics and your thoughts on quantum physics. Nah.

The very first time I ever had tangible, live connections to other people online, at the same time, in one space, was a thing called Worlds Chat in like 1995. It still exists today!

You would log on and pick a two-dimensional avatar in something that looked like it was built in the same engine as Doom. And then you’d walk around in this … virtual chatroom, and just talk to people! That was … until a man somehow figured out that I was a child using this chat program, and propositioned me in a corner away from other chatters.

That was the last time I ever saw Worlds Chat.

I’m getting a little off-topic again, though. Mostly, life before the internet was a lot of phone calls, and no text messages. They didn’t exist. There was a lot of reading maps (a skill that is surely lost on generation z and alpha), and phone books. A phone book! What the hell is that?!

You see, we had these big old books that got updated yearly, and they’d have everyone’s name, address and phone number in them. And if you didn’t know someone’s number, you had to look them up in this book, a book that had literal yellow pages. I think you can see something like this in Back to the Future 1 or 2, and Terminator (I honestly don’t know if they’re still made today, in 2024).

    It was a wild time.

As a kid without the internet, I spent a lot of hours just playing with toys. Making up scenarios in my head. Stretch Armstrong needs to fight the G.I. Joes, and win! Because … Yeah!

Or, I’d run outside with my brothers, clasp my hands together, and pretend we were soldiers shooting at each other. That was back before things got a bit darker in the world, and you really didn’t want to just let your kids run wild in a neighborhood. But we did, we did that a whole lot.

Even when I started noticing girls, I didn’t really use the internet to … explore all that. At least not until I was well into becoming a teenager. But, by that point, we had Geocities, and AOL Instant Messenger. Artifacts of the past I wish they’d revive. I don’t think many people would object to their presence.

I guess the gist of the story here is that, life before the internet was … really simple. You didn’t think about the war across the ocean, because you didn’t really know about it. You didn’t think about millions of people within digital arm’s reach in devastating situations, or reaching the end of their lives, because you just did not know about these things, at all.

There was no such thing as engagement farming, or clickbait, hell, even spam email wasn’t really a problem. Not at least until the late nineties.

There weren’t Twitch streamers, or Youtubers, or Instagram influencers.

There was just … people going about their lives, in an entirely different way that we, well, will never, ever see again. I couldn’t tell you if people were happier back then, because I just didn’t notice. I also can’t really say whether it was intrinsically better or not, because honestly, I didn’t really have a concept of all of this back then to really think about and compare.

Would it be better if we didn’t have the internet we have today, and people just kind of sat in their homes reading books and watching television? Maybe, but maybe not?

But that’s just what life was, before the internet.

I’m 53 years old, of course I remember life before the internet.

I graduated from high school in 1989, which means it was still the 70’s when I started school. We had things called libraries that were full of books you could use to lean things. We had newspapers. I actually had a paper route for a while. We had news on TV that wasn’t propaganda for a political party. You could actually almost trust what you heard on the news. Most of it, at least.

When you wanted to meet new people you had to leave your house. When your phone rang you had to answer it. Can you believe that shit?

When you wanted to watch a TV show you had to wait until a specific time when it was being broadcast, and you had to tune to a specific channel on a television that had an antenna on it.

Yeah, there was life before the internet. I was there. It was oaky, but the internet is better. I mean, you wouldn’t be reading this literary triumph of a blog post without it, so clearly having the internet is better, right?

    Right?
