  2. And the winner is… Weekly Recap 4/6/2026

Cats are obviously the best pet.

When you win the affection of a cat, you have become a god.

I’m not really sure what qualifies as the worst type of pet because I have an obnoxious adoration of all animals. If we look at it purely in terms of interactions, however, then fish are probably the strangest. Our environments are just too different.

I’ve never seen a goldfish nuzzle anyone. Have you?

Note: Fans of dogs need not reply to my opening statement. I’m not saying that I don’t like dogs. I do! It’s just that cats are better. And no matter how much you love dogs, you still know that I’m right.

Good morning and happy Monday, friends!

Last week, my book officially started shipping from Crossed Crow. And today, it’s been released on Amazon. Have you gotten a copy yet?

I’m obviously pretty excited about it, so I wrote a short post about how writing is alchemy. If you are reading and enjoying the book, then it would be awesome if you also leave a review somewhere. Help me raise it up from the depths of obscurity.

Over the weekend, Selene and I went to one of those classes where they give you step-by-step instructions on how to paint.

And we attempted to paint some sort of sunset-colored, moonlit sky over mountains.

For it being one of our first times attempting such a thing, I think we did a pretty great job. Honestly, I felt a little lost during certain parts, especially when we were blending, but hey… there’s actually some sort of a gradient in my painting, so… success?

    Regardless, it was fun.

We also got some munchies. Egg salad on a croissant? Yes please, I’ll try that.

I am currently uploading a new episode of M3 to Patreon as an early release for supporters. It features Amber Rae. It’ll be up as soon as Patreon stops throttling my transfer speeds—at the moment, it’s looking like it’ll take a couple of hours, but it keeps hitting 10% and then kicking me out. I’ll keep at it!

This month is pretty much the last push before my semester is over, so I’m off to go do some homework!

Don’t worry, more is coming soon. Stay tuned!

  3. Some Angels Don’t Have Wings

Sometimes, the miracles we pray for don’t arrive in grand ways.
Sometimes, they come quietly… walking on four legs, finding their way home.

We grew up with animals the way some people grow up with stories—always present, always part of life.

Dogs, cats, chickens, even pigs. They were not “pets” in the way people describe them now. They were simply there. Around us. With us. Like extended pieces of the family we didn’t question.

But if there was one that stayed with me… it was a dog named Tagpi.

He had a black spot on his body, nothing extraordinary to anyone else, but enough for us to name him, to claim him, to love him. Tagpi.

He slept in the same room as we did. Not outside. Not tied. Just there—curled in a corner or stretched near our feet, as if he understood that his place was wherever we were.

He wasn’t loud, but he was always watching. Always present. The kind of presence you only notice deeply once it’s gone.

One Christmas Eve, everything felt different.

My father had just gone through a mild stroke and was out of work. Money was tight in a way that children don’t fully understand, but can always feel. My mother was doing what she could—small jobs, whatever came her way—to keep things going. Medicines had to come first. Everything else came after.

That night, we didn’t prepare for a celebration.

There was no food on the table waiting for midnight. No anticipation of a feast. Just a quiet agreement, unspoken but understood—we would attend midnight mass, come home, and sleep.

Sometimes, survival asks you to be silent like that.

After mass, we walked home under a sky that felt both heavy and calm.

And then Tagpi came running toward us.

    Not empty-mouthed.

    Not playful.

    But carrying something.

    A plastic bag.

    Neatly tied.

Inside it—more than a kilo of pork.

    We stood there, confused.

My parents knew every meat vendor in our small town. The first thought was simple: maybe he took it from someone.

    So my mother asked around.

Vendor after vendor said the same thing.

    “No, not from us.”

    No one claimed it.

    No one was missing anything.

Even the plastic bag couldn’t be traced.

    There was no explanation.

    So we went home.

And for the first time that night, there was something on the table.

    Not abundance.

    Not excess.

    Just enough.

    Enough to cook.

    Enough to share.

Enough to turn a quiet night into something that still felt like Christmas.

My mother didn’t question it any further. She simply said thank you—to God, to whatever force allowed that moment to happen.

    And Tagpi?

He lay there, like it was just another ordinary night.

Looking back now, I don’t try to explain it.

    Some things don’t need logic.

Some things arrive when they are meant to.

Tagpi was never just a dog.

He guarded us like his life depended on it.

Stayed with us like he belonged.

Loved us in a way that didn’t ask for anything in return.

And on a night when we had nothing to give…

    he brought something home.

We cried hard when he died.

Not because we lost a pet.

But because we lost someone who, in his own quiet way, once reminded us that even in our hardest moments, we were not forgotten.

    Some angels don’t have wings.

Some come home… carrying exactly what you need. 🐾

He never spoke, yet he understood our hunger.

He never asked, yet he gave.

And in a world that often forgets…

    he remembered us.

  6. Daily writing prompt What animals make the best/worst pets? View all responses

I don’t think any pet is a bad pet if you love it. Some would be more… challenging than others, but in the interest of discussion let’s start with the good pet while I think of an answer for a bad pet.

You don’t have to scroll far into the history of this blog to figure out my answer. Cats. Cats are the best because they take work. There’s none of that unconditional love shit with cats. You have to earn their love and respect. You have to convince them that you’re their humans. It’s possible that they might think that we are their pets rather than the other way around, but that’s okay with me.

Okay… what animals make bad pets… besides none, of course. I was going to say something prone to serious violence like an alligator with anger management issues, or a rabid tiger. Instead I am going to borrow my answer from an early South Park episode.

An elephant would suck as a pet. As Kyle said on South Park, its poop would be bigger than your couch. If it tried to cuddle up against you it would squash you to jelly. That doesn’t sound like a terribly pleasant pet/human interaction at all! Yeah, an elephant as a pet would kind of suck.
