The Caramelized Alibi

The new mystery in Speranza: Christmas murders with a tad of Caramel..

The autumn sun in Speranza was the color of aged parchment, casting long, lazy shadows across the village market as the first hint of December’s frost began to bite. In the heart of the village, the grand Christmas tree stood as a towering spire of green, but its festive beauty was eclipsed by a scene of magnificent chaos. Beneath the lowest branches, nestled amidst a dusty pile of forgotten histories and the vibrant silk wrappers of the season, lay the body of the visiting gourmet critic.

A Bittersweet Discovery

The air around the Piazza, usually thick with the scent of Anna’s roasted coffee and Altea’s fine tobacco, was now cloyed with the smell of burnt sugar and sea salt.

The victim was found slumped against the tree’s base, his face serene but his eyes wide and unseeing.

He clutched a “Caramel Gold” bar from Marisa’s Mint Chocolate house, the silver-wrapped treat half-eaten.

A faint, sweet, floral scent—reminiscent of hyacinth but with a sharp, chemical undertone—hung in the frigid air.

Ispettore Salomone arrived looking profoundly weary, his patience already thinner than a poorly brewed Earl Grey.

The Feline Sentinels

Back at La Pagina che Fa le Fusa, my sanctuary of rosemary and old paper, the atmosphere was one of quiet tension. My two furry proprietors, sensing a dissonant note in the village’s harmony, began their own investigation.

Toe, the sleek black Maine Coon, ignored the festive bustle and began an obsessive ritual of batting at a small, ornate silver sachet he had found snagged in the tree’s tinsel.

Ashwaganda, the ginger sage with amber eyes that held the wisdom of ages, sat pointedly in front of a new pot of calendula flowers, letting out a soft, insistent meow.

He stared directly at the “Caramel Gold” wrapper I had brought back, his “gold stare” signaling a truth hidden in the sugar.

The Wisdom of the Blue Book

I turned to my chair of bordeaux velvet and opened the strange book I had bought for a handful of coins: Days of your Dreams. Bound in faded peacock-blue leather and penned in shimmering silver ink, its pages rustled with a soft, dry scent of pressed flowers. I searched for an entry on “Gold” and “Salt,” and the script began to shift into a cryptic prophecy:

“Where the serpent eats its tail, the sweet gold is snared. Look not for what was taken, but for the ‘smoke’ that never burns. The truth is found where the earth is youngest and the fox hides its dye.”

The Shadow on the Threshold

The investigation took a chilling turn when the door to the shop—hidden under an ivy-covered stone arch—creaked open. A man stood there, as smooth and polished as river stones, holding a silver-stamped ledger that mirrored the emblem of a sleeping cat and a key.

“Signorina Hopes,” he boomed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling like a retired opera diva’s. “The caramel was a masterful forgery, a distraction for the real prize hidden within the tree’s heart.”

Moira felt a jolt go through her. This was not just a case of a poisoned critic; it was the violent beginning of a new story, one involving a contested inheritance, a forger’s touch, and the “lullaby of death” hidden in a scent of caramel.

Cancer. The disease we all know, but few truly understand

Cancer. It’s a word we’re all familiar with, yet it’s one of the most misunderstood diseases out there. People often ask, “Why haven’t we cured cancer yet?” Sometimes with a hint of conspiracy, as if there’s a miracle cure hidden away by Big Pharma. The truth? Cancer isn’t a single disease. It’s a collection of over 200 different diseases, each with its own quirks, mutations and survival tactics.

As someone studying health science and planning a future in cancer research, I see this misconception a lot. So, let’s break it down: why is cancer so difficult to treat and why we don’t yet have a universal “cure”.

1️⃣ Cancer is not one disease

Cancer is a collective term for over 200 distinct diseases, each originating in different types of cells in the body. These include common cancers such as breast, lung and colon cancer, as well as rarer forms like sarcomas and brain tumours. Each type of cancer can behave very differently, with unique growth patterns, molecular drivers and response to treatment.

One person’s breast cancer might be driven by hormones (oestrogen and progesterone receptors), while another’s is HER2-positive, meaning it relies on a completely different molecular pathway. Some lung cancers are linked to smoking, while others are caused by genetic mutations like EGFR or ALK. This complexity is why cancer treatment has to be personalised as it’s not just about “curing cancer,” it’s about understanding each cancer.

2️⃣ Cancer is a genetic disease, but not always inherited 

At its core, cancer happens when cells acquire genetic mutations that let them grow uncontrollably. Some of these mutations are inherited, but most occur randomly or due to environmental factors (think UV exposure, smoking or even just the natural wear and tear of aging).

Even when two people have the same type of cancer, their tumours may have completely different genetic mutations. This means treatments that work for one patient might not work for another. It also means that even when we develop highly targeted therapies, cancer can still outmaneuver us by acquiring new mutations that make it resistant to treatment.

3️⃣ Cancer within cancer

One of the most frustrating things about cancer is that it doesn’t stay the same. Even within a single tumour, not all cancer cells are identical. Some are more aggressive, some are more resistant to drugs and some can lie dormant, waiting for the right moment to spread.

This is called tumour heterogeneity and it’s one of the biggest reasons why cancer is so difficult to treat. Think of it like trying to fight an army where every soldier has a different strategy: some are easy to defeat, but others are stealthy, adaptable or outright resistant to attack. Even if an initial treatment wipes out most of the cancer, the surviving cells can regroup and become be more resistant to treatment or capable of spreading (metastasising) to other organs, while others may remain dormant and return stronger than before. This is why many cancers relapse after treatment. Which brings us to…

4️⃣ Cancer learns how resist treatment

Cancer’s ability to resist treatment is a major challenge in oncology. Resistance can arise through several mechanisms:

• Mutations that make them drug-resistant – Just like bacteria can evolve resistance to antibiotics, cancer cells can mutate to escape chemotherapy or targeted therapies.
• Pumping drugs out of the cell – Some cancer cells develop molecular pumps that literally eject chemotherapy drugs before they can take effect.
• Hiding from the immune system – Some cancers produce signals that trick immune cells into leaving them alone, which is why immunotherapy has been a game-changer for certain cancers but again it doesn’t work for everyone.

This constant evolution is why a treatment that works at first might stop working over time. It’s also why cancer research is always racing to stay ahead.

5️⃣ The tumour microenvironment: cancer’s secret weapon

Cancer doesn’t grow in isolation. It hijacks its surroundings to create an environment where it can thrive. Tumours send signals to stimulate angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, so they can steal nutrients and oxygen. The problem? These new blood vessels are often disorganised and leaky, leading to low-oxygen (hypoxic) regions in the tumour. Hypoxia not only makes cancer cells more aggressive but also makes them resistant to radiation therapy.

Even the immune system gets manipulated. Normally, our immune cells patrol the body, looking for rogue cells to eliminate. But tumours can reprogram immune cells to help them instead turning what should be the body’s defence system into unwitting allies.

This is why treatments like immune checkpoint inhibitors (e.g., anti-PD-1, anti-CTLA-4) have been revolutionary. They help “reawaken” the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells but again, not all cancers respond to these therapies.

6️⃣ Side effects and toxicity

One of the biggest challenges in cancer treatment is that traditional therapies like chemotherapy and radiation aren’t very selective. They target rapidly dividing cells which includes cancer cells, but also healthy cells in places like:

• The gut → causing nausea and digestive issues
• The bone marrow → leading to low blood cell counts and fatigue
• Hair follicles → resulting in hair loss

Newer treatments, like targeted therapy and immunotherapy, aim to be more precise, reducing these side effects. But even targeted therapies aren’t perfect because, as we’ve established, cancer cells are constantly changing and finding ways to escape.

7️⃣ So… Can we ever “cure” Cancer?

Despite all these challenges, cancer treatment has come a long way. We now have precision medicine, which allows doctors to tailor treatments based on a patient’s unique tumour profile. Drugs like HER2 inhibitors for breast cancer and BRAF inhibitors for melanoma have transformed survival rates for some patients.

The problem? Cancer still finds ways around these treatments. No single approach will ever be enough, which is why cancer research continues to focus on:

• Combination therapies – Using multiple drugs at once to prevent resistance.
• Early detection – Catching cancer before it spreads makes treatment far more effective.
• Immunotherapy advancements – Training the immune system to fight cancer in a way that doesn’t rely on traditional drugs.

Studying cancer has only made me realise how much we still don’t know. It’s frustrating, fascinating and constantly changing which is exactly why research never stops.

So, when people ask me personally, will we ever “cure” cancer? I usually respond with probably not in the way people imagine. Reframing the question to: Will we get better at treating it? Absolutely. The more we understand about cancer’s complexity, the better we can target its weaknesses.

Until then, research continues. Because while cancer is an expert at adapting, so are the scientists.

Es curioso cómo hay personas que se ponen súper sensibles cuando las etiquetan en un post. Lo he visto muchas veces, y a veces me mandan mensajes como este:
«¿Por qué me etiquetas, estas tontita? No me interesan tus publicaciones.» 🤷‍♀️

La verdad es que, ni sabía que existías. Pero cuando me mencionan en alguna publicación, si me da curiosidad, ¡claro que voy a abrir el post! 😅 Si no me interesa, simplemente sigo con lo mío. Es solo un toque rápido, no pasa nada. 🤷‍♀️💨

El síndrome del personaje principal… 😅

Pero lo mejor de todo es que algunos se creen el personaje principal de toda la película. Se toman las cosas demasiado a pecho y se olvidan de que hay millones de personas en Facebook y que no todo está centrado en ellos. 📸😬

Y por supuesto, no falta el que empieza a darle «me divierte» a todas las publicaciones, como si fuera un spam. 😂

Something that no one understands… besides Three dimensional Calculus? Physics? Astronomy? Stuff like that?

About half of the people in the United States don’t seem to understand that fascism is both a thing (a bad thing at that) and un-American. I don’t understand how people don’t seem to get that, but they don’t. Fascism is idiotic and yet trump won the presidency in 2016 and got about half of the votes in 2020 and got the nomination for the nazi, umm I mean republican party just this month. What the ever loving fuck?

People don’t understand that weaving between lanes on the highway makes the traffic jams worse. Yeah, I just got to work after an hour and 40 minutes in gridlock. Morons changing lane for no benefit or no reason just make the stupid situation worse.

What else can I put here… I’m sure I can come up with something… I don’t know. I guess the anti-nazi one is enough for today.

Just remember folks, fascism is bad. Really bad.
