A large, robust rusty lark with a short crest, hefty bill, and prominent rufous wing panel that is obvious in flight. Pairs are resident in open grassland and grassy savanna. It is most conspicuous when it perches up singing a sweet, simple song of 2-3 whistled notes such as “treee-treeloo”. The similar Red-winged Lark is larger than Sentinel Lark and less compact, with a longer tail and blackish patches on the sides of the neck.

Told from similar but much rarer and slightly bulkier White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant by slender, all-dark bill (pale below on young Black-billed), and pale eyes (darker on young).

Large, mostly white raptor that cruises over lakes, rivers, and coastal waterways in search of fish. Impressively widespread: found on every continent except Antarctica. Mostly white head and underparts; dark brown back. In flight, holds wings with a kink in the wrist (shaped like an "M"). Stick nests are conspicuous on top of channel markers, utility poles and high platforms near water. Often seen plunging feet-first into water from high in the air to grab fish.

Female is similar but duller, with no indigo belly patch, a whitish throat, paler underparts, and a pale brown crown. Listen for its song, a series of well-spaced explosive but mellow “byow!”s. Widely distributed but uncommon to locally common; inhabits hill and lowland dipterocarp forests, where it seems to favor dry ridges, hilltops, and limestone areas.

Large, long-billed dark sunbird with red shoulder tufts that are often hidden. Males have very long tail streamers and are dark iridescent green in breeding plumage, and gray-brown with some green patches in non-breeding plumage. Females are dark gray-brown. Found in grassland and heath habitats at very high elevations. Vocalizations include metallic calls and a quick, scrambled song. Similar to Malachite Sunbird, but generally found at higher elevations, and looks darker in all plumages; female lacks white edges to the tail.

Medium-sized antbird with pale blue facial skin. Look for warm brown back and gray head; males have entirely gray body, females brown. Frequently flicks tail down and slowly raises it back up. Sticks to the understory in mature forest, where it can be difficult to get a clear view. Usually in pairs. Distinctive song: two or three whistles, the last note dropping in pitch.

Medium-sized woodcreeper with a short bill. Found in the lower to middle levels of humid forests where it moves restlessly. Rather uniform rufous-brown overall with a brighter tail and a buff throat. Often associated with army-ant swarms and sometimes follows mixed-species flocks, but can also be encountered alone. The northern subspecies lacks the buff throat and has more rufous in the wings and tail.The song is a long (~60 seconds) series of “tchip-tchip-tchip” notes.

Often detected by its loud “ki-ki-ki-ki-ki,” which steadily increases in pace and ends in a trill.

A fairly small, long-tailed bird of lowland and foothill forest interior. Plain brown underparts and head with rufous wings and rump. Black tail with obvious white tips which it often keeps fanned and cocked. Does not normally co-occur with other brown fantails. Possible overlap with Arafura Fantail although that species has black face and chest markings. Similar to female Rufous Fantail but Rufous-backed is found at lower elevations and lacks the rufous underparts and head. Voice, a lazy, downward series of slurred whistles, sounding like ‘Three Blind Mice’.

A tiny, long-tailed, fluffy gray ball of a bird. Distinctly drab brownish-gray with a stubby dark bill. Multiple populations differ slightly: eye color ranges from dark to pale, and some have black cheeks. Constantly in motion; active, twittering flocks move quickly through bushes and trees. Listen for their high-pitched, scratchy calls. Found in brushy woodlands and pine-oak forests in western North America, south to Guatemala.

A tiny, long-tailed, fluffy gray ball of a bird. Distinctly drab brownish-gray with a stubby dark bill. Multiple populations differ slightly: eye color ranges from dark to pale, and some have black cheeks. Constantly in motion; active, twittering flocks move quickly through bushes and trees. Listen for their high-pitched, scratchy calls. Found in brushy woodlands and pine-oak forests in western North America, south to Guatemala.

A medium-sized kingfisher of mangroves and forested streams in the lowlands. Black face, blue crown and bright white throat are characteristic. Underparts of males vary geographically, some with rufous or dark bellies and a white crescent. Females have white belly. Perches in the understory, scanning below for its prey of fish or crabs. Very difficult to see. Somewhat similar to Azure Kingfisher, but Blue-black Kingfisher is distinctly larger with a dark chest or chest band. Call, a short nasal series “weeh-wiwiwi!” with an initial longer, rising note, then shorter falling notes.

Elusive dark quail found in the interior of humid tropical forest in lowlands and foothills. Forages stealthily in forest interior, usually in pairs or small groups, and usually runs rather than flies when disturbed. Sexes look alike, with erect crest, blackish throat, and white polka dots on breast. Sometimes in same areas as the much smaller Singing Quail, which is much more easily seen.
