Learning through problem-solving
Maybe this was a symptom of my upraising, but I am a believer in learning through figuring out how things work. I was a technologist when people struggled with new tech. VCRs, radio alarms, computers, microwaves, dishwashers, etc. I usually ended up getting tasked with knowing and operating them on behalf of my parents, teachers, etc. My process was "scientific." We still read aloud even though Fleur is school age. We focus on chapter books, so it takes longer, so no longer a couple books a night. More like a chapter a night. Reading is good for creativity and empathy, not just vocabulary. It's a way to expose oneself to alternative perspectives. We learn about the world through nonfiction. And about ourselves in fiction. It makes me curious how people pick the names for their child. The choice and even the process are deeply personal. It tells quite a bit about how they think. How did you pick really important names? Homework
I hated homework as a kid. It seemed so pointless. Needlessly repetitive and rote when I understood the concept. Or, I didn’t understand it at all, so I just stared at the page.
I was also feral. In 2nd through 4th grade, I walked across the street from school to the public library or more rarely a mile-plus home. Either way, for over an hour and sometimes two, I was left to my own devices. Mostly with other kids my age.
