A few weeks ago I bought my first bike bag to enable me to more easily transport my bike on mass transit - especially trains and buses/coaches.

I bought the Ground Effect (NZ) made Tardis. Here's the 4-star review I just left them on their site.

Tough, flexible and compact - a great bag

When the bag is delivered you get your first real idea of just how compact it is when empty and folded away! It's about A4 size but about 25cm thick - this ain't no folio.

Although the packing is fairly intuitive, the bag lacks instructions (it would be useful if they were printed on the inside like some tents have). The video on Ground Effect's website isn't up-to-date with the most recent design but, like I said, it's fairly intuitive.

If you haven't stripped your bike in this way, then I suggest you get someone to help who has because there are all sorts of tips - e.g. marking the bars and seat - that are assumed knowledge in the video. I've done it a couple of times before but, even so, it can be tricky. I took my wheels, bars and rear derailleur off, got a couple of bits of cardboard for extra protection between wheels and frame but left the pedals on - I think it adds a little extra protection and seemed to have little effect on the packing or portability.

I bought this for a coach trip and it was perfect! I loaded it on and off and noticed that it barely shifted and I would expect a similar experience on a train. The Tardis easily meets the generous size criteria for Murrays coaches and is the right size for country rail travel in NSW. Larger bike cases would offer more protection and stability but may not meet the criteria for train travel.

It fits easily into the boot or backseat of a car or taxi and although I did carry the bag a few hundred metres, I wouldn't want to walk much further with it.

Overall, I am stoked with my purchase! It was delivered quickly, met my expectations and will enable some interstate trips by public transport.

Got a new D lock for my bicycle and it has a sticker on it saying it is Sold Secure Diamond rated, and I’m wondering whether I should peel that off - while it might be a deterrent “that will be hard to break, maybe not” it could equally attract attention “explicitly good lock, must be worth nicking!” My instinct is to get rid of the sticker…

Do any biketooters out there have a view/ advice/ experience?

Found the best way to lube my chain using paraffin. Previously I was using a regular pot in which I heated the wax, but that was terrible to clean afterwards.

I now use a silicon shape heated in the oven and the cleanup is a breeze. The wax can even be recovered and reused.

On _why_ I use paraffin, well, it's because the chain and drive-train are much cleaner all year round. The downside is that it needs to be done a bit more often.

I've wanted to fit a rear facing camera to the handlebars of my road and mountain bikes to better capture close passes but I struggled to find a suitable camera/mount combo. I finally decided that a Tooocycling DVR80 combined with a Topeak BarXtender offered the best solution. The mount is fairly heavy but very solid and can be adjusted for various angles. After years on WAHOO cycling computers it’s time to check what others have done in between.

First candidate: Hammerhead Karoo 2. Setup process is seamless. Maps are loaded. (that’s one of the pain points on the ROAM)

First impression of the UI: ugly. Just ugly. Maybe I can get used to it because everything else works fine? 🤔
