  1. Nagano, I’ve Missed You

I’ve missed riding in Nagano. If there’s one place I love riding my bike, it’s Nagano (and Gifu, actually).

I once rode from my house in Kasugai to Hiraya in Nagano, via Toki, Mizunami and Yahagi Dam, and arrived before 10:00am. A friend called and asked if I wanted to ride that day, and I replied, “I’ve just ridden to Nagano!” Absolute madness, looking back.

A couple of days ago, while out on a ride, I thought about riding in Nagano, but that pestering voice on my shoulder kept telling me not to. I woke up in the middle of the night with reasons not to ride there the following morning.

But I’d planned for that. Just like the old days, everything was ready to go. The bike was set, my clothes were neatly piled in the bathroom, my drink bottles were waiting by the door, and my bike computer, helmet, camera gear and everything else were already in the car. No friction. Just get in the car and drive.

So I did. I drove to Nagano, parked up in a quiet layby, got on my bike and rode.

And as usual, I didn’t regret it. I rarely regret bike rides. I needed this ride. It wasn’t particularly long and I made sure to take it easy. It’s not 2016. I don’t need to go fast and far anymore, and it’s time to enjoy riding more.

Halfway up the climb, in the middle of the long tunnel I had to myself, I shouted as loud as I could that I loved my wife and daughter. It echoed for about 20 seconds, and I felt emotional.

    Nagano, I’ve missed you.

The ride is here if anyone is interested. I rode it on my Curve GXR, with my Lumix S5 and 28-200mm lens.

  2. Bikepacking in Central Japan

I haven’t been bikepacking for a few years now. The bike still gets ridden, but the long trips have stopped. But the old urge is still there and my bikepacking gear remains stored away next to my bikes, ready to be dusted off sometime.

That desire to revisit those days gave me the idea of pulling all the rides into one place. Every route I’ve ridden and photographed. The Japan Alps, the Kiso Valley, the Kii coast, and further out. Shimanami Kaido. Lake Biwa. The Noto Peninsula. The gear I used and what I learned about sleeping in bus shelters (arrive late, leave early).

If you’re interested in bikepacking in central Japan, it might be of use. You can find the new page here.
