So the archivist at the SFMTA Photo Archive was able to help me dig this up! I absolutely love this photo. However, the archive doesn't have much detail on it. The description for the photo says "Copy Photograph of Bicycle Riders on a Tandem Bicycle with a Baby Seat Likely in Golden Gate Park | Date Unknown" (though, not sure how unknown that date is given the "Date Taken" metadata for the photo says "31 December 1899" 😅 ).

I would love to get a better idea of the location where this photo was taken. I also assumed it was Golden Gate Park even before reading the description, but am not sure where in the park a path like this would have been located (if it's even actually in Golden Gate Park!).

Exactly how much she cycled and how much was travelling by boat or train with her bicycle is hard to tell as she embellished the story of her ride.

Heute an diesem Tag vor 145 Jahren wurde Marshall "Major" Taylor in Indianapolis geboren. Als Schwarzer Radrennfahrer und -profi wurde er massiv rassistisch diskriminiert. 1899 gewann er die Sprint-Weltmeisterschaft; ab 1901 startete er in Europa, wiederholt auch in Deutschland wie in Berlin.

Quite telling anecdote of early "heroic" cycle racing from France in the 1880s, involving later winner of inaugural Paris-Brest-Paris Charles Terront:

„On one occasion Terront was offered a rose by a pretty young girl just before the start of an important race. His wary trainer snatched it from him and smelt it. The rose had been chloroformed an the trainer almost passed out on the spot.“

Noch einmal Drew Buck und PBP: 2011 nahm er auf einem Peugeot aus dem Jahr 1900 mit entsprechender Kleidung teil. Und kam auch noch rechtzeitig ins Ziel.

Bei PBP sind bereits mehrfach Teilnehmer:innen auf historischen Rädern gestartet. Der Engländer Drew Buck fuhr 2007 als bretonischer Zwiebelverkäufer (mit künstlichen Zwiebeln) auf einer RetroDirecte mit zwei Gängen. Für den kleinen Gang muss man rückwärts treten: "It's like a Michael Jackson moonwalk, you feel like you're going backwards while you're going forwards".

Das eigentliche Ziel meiner Tour mit #Rennrad galt der #Fahrradgeschichte bzw. #CyclingHistory und lag in Swalmen: Das Denkmal im nach ihm benannten Park für Mathieu Cordang, genannt "Recordang", einem niederländischen Radrennfahrer, der um die Jahrhundertwende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert einen beeindruckenden Palmares hinlegte (u.a.: Stundenweltrekord, 2. bei Paris-Roubaix, olympisches Gold, uvm.), und der hier in Swalmen 1942 starb:
