  1. The March 2026 issue of 'Solid Copy', the newsletter of CWOps (cwops.org/current-month/), features a paper of mine, "Empirical Findings About Morse Code Learning and the Need For Further Research". I wrote it while researching how much of current Morse code learning lore had actually some empirical support. Comments welcome!

  6. A few years ago, I moved from Lloyds Bank to #Starling Bank, and until now have been universally happy with their service. However, having just completed the #CWOps fundamental course, I wanted to send a contribution to the wonderful Buzz (AC6AC) using PayPal and his email address. Unfortunately Starling blocked this, saying they are not allowing international transfers currently, and are working on "improving" their handling of them. The alternative offered is their own international transfer system. This would of course require me to ask for bank details, and an address for the recipient - an email is not enough. They are also blocking Wyse - another alternative I have. I am not happy about this - is this something all banks are implementing? It feels like it is either a possible money laundering prohibition requirement? They wouldn't even let me transfer funds to my PayPal account...
In other news, I want to move to an alternative OS for my phone (Google Pixel 7) but since Starling needs the app to be able to log into their website I have hesitated. Perhaps I am reaching a conjunction where changing banks to one where an app is not required could solve two problems at once! I don't need payment by phone - I have recently taken to using cash wherever possible - better for me, and better for the places where I am spending it! F*ck Google and all the other skimmers!
Suggestions for a better UK bank option welcome along with other suggestions about sending funds to an email address!

  11. I wrote this haiku as part of the homework for the #cwops advanced CW class last year:

    We went on the air
    Seeking stations far away
    Some success some fun

  26. I had this delightful baby iambic key arrive this week via AliExpress. It’s not going to win any contests, but it was something affordable to dip my toes into the iambic key waters.

So far I am really impressed as it brings timing consistency to my CW where I might have been considered a bit all over the place on a straight key. Much easier on the hand too.
