  9. A quotation from Ben Franklin

What knowing Judgment, or what piercing Eye,
Can Man’s mysterious Maze of Falshood try?
Intriguing Man, of a suspicious Mind,
    Man only knows the Cunning of his Kind;
With equal Wit can counter-work his Foes,
And Art with Art, and Fraud with Fraud oppose.
Then heed ye Fair, e’er you their Cunning prove,
And think of Treach’ry, while they talk of Love.

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) American statesman, scientist, philosopher, aphorist
    Poor Richard (1742 ed.)

  21. Hard poem, but reflects how I feel these days…

    Acid - #MaryOliver

    In Jakarta,

    among the venders

    of #flowers and soft drinks,

    I saw a child
with a hideous mouth,

    #begging,

and I knew the #wound was made

for a way to stay alive.

    What I gave him

    wouldn’t keep a dog alive.

    What he gave me

from the brown coin

    of his sweating face

was a look of #cunning.

I carry it

like a bead of acid

    to remember how,

once in a while,

you can creep out of your own life

and become someone else—

    an #explosion

in that nest of wires

we call the #imagination.

    I will never see him

again, I suppose.

    But what of this rag,

this shadow

    flung like a boy’s body

    into the walls

    of my mind, bleeding

their sour taste—

    #insult and #anger,

    the great movers?

  24. I'm not sure what made me just remember this story from my late mother's aunt during the war, 1stWW I think...
She met her later husband not long before he was sent overseas. They came up with a cunning plan for sharing his location with a postcard and a map of the world which they both had a copy of.
The map had a tiny pin hole pushed through it and the card to tell her his location, she matched her map up with the received card! Clever huh 😏
