  3. What Could Possibly Happen?

The weather app indicates 34 degrees and a chance of rain.  And some wind.  Great.  The idea of leaving my cozy living room is less than wonderful. As I slog around the house getting all my gear, I wonder about this cycling addiction I have.  What draws me to long distance trips which, if you’ve ever read any of my blogs about said adventures, you will know, are not all ponies and unicorns.  Sunny and clear and very, very cold and windy. There are so many aspects to this kind of […]

  10. I came back to Australia with no family nearby, no connections — and somehow it felt harder to get a phone call than it did to get help from strangers in Uzbekistan.

  11. Quiet days in Laos turned into full-body culture shock.
A meditation café, an e-bike escape through Vientiane traffic, and then suddenly — me, the only foreigner, standing in a sea of faces at the That Luang Festival.

I came for a gentle walk.
I left with my perspective shaken (in the best way).

I don't have a complete picture, but I've been watching some "Foreigners reacting to German culture" videos for a while now.

They kinda used to be more ... balanced, or curious, in the past. Even if healthcare and safety from violence have always been a big plus for Europe.

But it's kinda striking that quite a few long time posters in this category recently moved to Europe, or moved back to Europe. Like "James Bray" or "Feli from Germany".

  14. 👷‍♂️🔨 Oh no, South Koreans are shocked—shocked!—to find out that working at Hyundai's plant in Georgia involves actual work (and also detentions). Next, we’ll find out the coffee machine doesn’t brew kimchi soup. 😂🌍

  15. "Albania vs. America: Daily Life Differences"

I haven't watched much of this guy's stuff since I'm not really into the entrepreneurial Digital Nomad types. But what he mentions about emergency preparedness here is true in my experience.

I was just asking about multi-story bldg escape routes today and I could tell the realtor felt I was a bit picky for asking. I guess a lot of folks just try not to think about it...

  16. I nowadays get the same uncomfortable feeling when engaging with that I used to get when dealing with . Maybe I'll soon reach the point where seeing someone use GitHub is as much of a culture shock as spotting someone searching with Google is to me today 💥

Hopefully all the projects I'm interested in would have moved on by then :forgejo:

  17. All through school, teachers, administrators, and professors had us refer to them by title and last name—Mr. Duda, Mrs. White, Prof. Samuels, etc.

It came as a shock to me, when I got my first job in corporate America, and bosses decades my senior insisted I call them by their first names.

  18. The new video from @TechConnectify initially made me feel like I'd fallen through a portal to another plane of reality where everything was weird.

.... Then, towards the end of it I realised that bizarro dimension was called "The United States of America"

Really amusing, if perhaps predictably in-character, how MP3 CDs weren't -- A thing -- Over there. Described as this niche feature of some players that no one really noticed or cared about.

They were the default media format over here in Brazil for some 15 years, until optical media started being phased out everywhere in the mid 10s.

.... And yes, 99.99% of them were pirated af, burned on the shops' own backroom (or, of course, at home if you were tech-y like I was) from tunes downloaded from eMule/Kazaa/etc.

So it does make sense it never really ~happened~ in the US. But still feels surreal.

  20. I had so little culture shock upon entering Europe, but even now, *months* after returning to the United States, I still catch myself bewildered or dismayed that this or that isn't like it is in Amsterdam; subconsciously I'm still there! 🇳🇱✈️🇺🇸😑

  22. Talking to an American friend and they mention that they don't like baked beans in tomato sauce, they only like baked beans. And I am confusious because baked beans ... is in tomato sauce, like there's no "baked beans in tomato sauce" it's just baked beans.

Found out they add brown sugar to their beans. I—I just.... HUH?

  23. A friend warns me I might be in for culture shock...upon *returning* to the US. Nobody seemed to think I'd get any upon *leaving*; just when I got back. Considering my reaction to parts of Europe that remind me more of my own country, they might just be right...

Painting is Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach's "Abschied".

  25. Re: Russians Don’t Smile

A Russian girl in Australia had her car's plates stolen. To replace them, 🇦🇺 police requires a statement confirming that she is in a relationship with her husband.

The Ru girl goes to the Justice of the Peace (that’s a police notary) at the police station to verify this relationship statement.

The Justice refuses to sign the document because the girl looks too grumpy.

  26. "What can I do to help Ukraine?"

Well -- you can boost this video of the superb band La Horsa Bianca doing a stellar cover of the Grateful Dead's classic China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider... in UKRAINIAN!

By doing so, you'll be pointing people toward Culture Shock in Kharkiv, which helps the UA army.

And of course, you can donate to support them:

  27. After a week or so of #twittermigration a few things on #learningmastodon:

💛 I love the culture of content warning and alt text for images. Taking care of strangers & not having to manage everything through blocks/mutes.

🤗 Hashtags and the federated timeline really work for connecting with new people.

⭐️ No algorithm and no promoted content makes engagement more meaningful, searches more relevant, and numbers less important.

☎️ I miss DM groups, but we are finding each other in other apps (#discord), and there’s something about a small instance community. #beigelove
