  1. Downtown #VictoriaBC will be filled with music, colour and tradition on April 11 as the Victoria #BengaliCulturalSociety hosts its first outdoor celebration of #PohelaBoishakh - the #Bengali #NewYear. The #FreeEvent, set for #CentennialSquare at noon, marks a milestone for the local Bengali community, bringing one of its most recognized #cultural traditions into the public square. For the first time in Victoria, organizers will stage the #MongolShobhajatra -a “parade of well-being” recognized by #UNESCO. The procession will feature large, handcrafted masks and vibrant artistic structures, accompanied by drumming and music symbolizing #peace and #unity.

The parade is expected to begin around 1 p.m. The celebration will also include live Bengali music and dance performances, a food fair showcasing #SouthAsian cuisine, and vendor stalls offering traditional clothing and handmade goods. Organizers say the event is meant to highlight the #diversity of #cultures on #VancouverIsland while offering residents a chance to engage with Bengali traditions.

Since the beginning of this year, The Bartholomew Collective has been forming a relationship of mutual aid with Sara Abu Rida. Sara is a dear friend of ours from Gaza, doing everything she can to keep her loved ones alive. Her family includes her mother, nieces and nephews, extended family, and community. Since the escalation of the genocide, her family home has been destroyed by bombs, and her family has been displaced numerous times. Amongst rampant starvation, sickness, unending violence, and the complete destruction of Palestine's economy, Sara and her family have a constant need for funds.

  11. The Valencia Mascletà

Wikipedia says, “A mascletà (pronounced in Valencian: [maskleˈta]) is a pyrotechnic event characterized by the achievement of a noisy and rhythmic composition that features, particularly during daytime, in street festivities; it is typical of the Valencian Community (Spain). It gets its name from the masclets (very loud firecrackers) that are tied by a wick to form a line or firework display. These are usually fastened at a medium height with ropes or raised by cannons.”

They are LOUD. The sound reverberates around the city centre, and you can feel it shake your body, and even into your legs. Quite an experience!

I did try to protect my ears, but it’s two days later, and there’s a remnant of the mascletà still ringing gently in my left ear since this morning when I woke up. Only time will tell if that is permanent.

  16. We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

    Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!
