I once saw someone ask a Korean person, “What is native Korean?” — basically asking who the Indigenous people of Korea are.

It caught me off guard, because the distinction between “native Koreans” and just “Koreans” doesn’t really work the same way here.

Unlike settler countries such as the United States, Korea wasn’t established through large-scale overseas settlement and immigration. Most ethnic Koreans are descendants of populations that have lived on the Korean Peninsula for a very long time.

That doesn’t mean Korea has had no migration or population movement throughout history. Of course it has. It just means that different countries have very different histories of migration, settlement, and state formation, and concepts that make perfect sense in one country may not map neatly onto another.

Sometimes even a simple question can reveal how differently we imagine what a “country” is.

Deborah Tannen has this concept of level of engagement in #talking. Where in some cultures, you wait your turn to talk, while in others, everyone talks at once (I come from the latter, BTW). This is an often missed #CulturalDifference, which leads to... issues.
