Thinking about my #cultish upbringing in the #ChurchOfChrist #CoC #CofC and how glad I am that I got out before my daughter was born.
Until recently, I'm afraid, spouse and I still allowed her to go to church with her grandparents when she spent a Saturday night with them.
I always knew that would end as soon as she expressed discomfort at being there. That expression happened this past summer.

@RamenCatholic My one "consolation" was that two of the men apologized to me in private about my having been "embarrassed."
I wasn't embarrassed. I was dismayed and livid.
It took another 4 or 5 years, but I finally left and have not looked back.

@bookstodon My #review of #Cultish by #AmandaMontell is now live! A really intriguing read, this one. I liked the attempt at a neutral approach towards things that feel cultish, even though they might not be dangerous.

Finished this #Book from 2021 today. #Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism gives an overview of the #linguistics of #cults & #CultLike groups, from #MLMs to fitness groups. It intersects with several of my own interests including #religion and #linguistics. Anyone interested in these topics or the phenomena of viral movements in general will appreciate this well organized, straightforward work that provides thoughtful reflection on what draws humans to these movements. #reading #viral #Books
