💁🏻♀️ TIL: #Google’s Debug program, with #Monash University and #mosquito control districts, applied for an #EPA permit to release 64 million male #Culex mosquitoes in #California and #Florida. 🦟
The males carry #Wolbachia #bacteria, making their offspring non-viable. Only females bite, so no biting mosquitoes are added. 🦠

Researchers document mosquito species in Puerto Rico that launches eggs aerially, one at a time, into the pools of water that collect between bracts of a plant. See figure 2. Seriously, see figure 2. #Household #expenditure on control of #urban #mosquitoes #Aedes albopictus and #Culex pipiens in #Emilia-Romagna, Northern #Italy https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0012552
Control activities that lower the #mosquito #density in both private and public areas could reduce the use of household #insecticides in urban environments and the related costs, and the risk of spread of imported #arboviruses as well.

#Oropouche #Fever, #Cuba, May 2024, Emerg Infect Dis.: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/30/10/24-0900_article
Phylogenetic analyses showed that virus responsible for a May 2024 Oropouche fever #outbreak in Cuba was closely related to viruses from #Brazil in 2023. Pools of Ceratopogonidae spp. biting #midges and #Culex quinquefasciatus #mosquitoes were positive for Oropouche viral RNA. No cases were severe. Virus extension to new areas may increase case numbers and severity.

The First Isolation of #Insect-Specific #Alphavirus (Agua Salud alphavirus) in #Culex (Melanoconion) #Mosquitoes in the Brazilian #Amazon https://www.mdpi.com/1999-4915/16/9/1355
This study is the first report on insect-specific alphavirus isolation in Brazil and the first-ever description of Agua Salud alphavirus isolation within Amazon Forest remnants.

Raft of mosquito eggs in one of my Bti honeypots. I think it's a Culex. Not sure whether species ID is possible — Pennsylvania has at least four species in the genus. But can rule out Culex erraticus because they oviposit onto margins of aquatic leaves in a very distinctive pattern. #mosquitoes #biology #nature #entomology #diptera #insects #culex

#Virulence and #transmission vary between #Usutu virus #lineages in #Culex pipiens https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0012295
Therefore, we found evidence of lineage-specific differences in vectorial capacity and virulence to both the vector and vertebrate host which lead to balanced propagation of both viral lineages.

In a #replicated, #controlled #experiment on wild-caught #Culex spp. #mosquitoes, Thormeyer and Tseng (2023) found no effect of #microplastics at either high doses of at field-relevant doses.
Quote: “Overall, our results showed that doses of 200 or 20,000 #particles per ml of 4.8–5.8 μm polystyrene beads had no effect on the #body #size, #development, or #growth #rate of Cx #pipiens or Cx #tarsalis.”
