For those who might be curious, you can still buy actual sponges (Porifera) for your sponging needs. I'm posting in part because I recently had a conversation with a person who argued that loofahs (gourds in the genus Luffa that can be dried) were actual sponges. In case you're interested in stopping by Hale's Apple Farm stand in Sebastopol, they are now harvesting 'Jonagold', 'Mutsu', 'Golden Delicious' (which is supposed to taste much better when harvested tree-ripe, which is not what happens with supermarket produce), 'Northern Spy' and 'Newtown Pippin'. They also have their own 'Gravenstein' Apple Juice in the freezer if you ask for it.
And it's festive gourd season as well. They sell several kinds, including pie pumpkins. #Cucurbitaceae #Farm
