Right on the heels of #CSUN, I'll be giving my Intro to Web #Accessibility class and a shortened version of my Be a Better Tester talk online on March 18th, 7-9pm Eastern. We'll go over learning resources, the industry in general, and how to write successful and actionable feedback for apps and websites! It's a free virtual workshop hosted by the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Books library and you can register here: https://nypl.zoom.us/meeting/register/WnFhNoHdQRSbrN3B5O7GJg#/registration

So ... the #CSUN list of exhibitors page is now a bunch of buttons that, when pressed, tell screen readers absolutely nothing and add a modal to the end of the DOM that you have to go find, which in turn has buttons that go to a website for said exhibitor.
Premier #blindness conference in the US and we can't even follow basic #web #accessibility practices I see. Great look guys, incredibly impressed. /s -
-
🙋🏽 not going to #CSUN this year as I believe it is unsafe to travel to the US under the current regime
-
I had this hilarious idea for #CSUN, and they just materialized at my door. Behold! My Unlabeled Buttons! These are sure to make fellow #Accessibility geeks laugh and make others remember to label their damned buttons and controls. I'll have 100 of these at the conference!

come check out the #WebAIM virtual conference tomorrow! Ted Drake and I will be talking about the challenges involved with trying to use AI to draft alt text; inaccuracies, hallucinations/confabulations, sanitization of disability representation and bias, lack of surrounding context, and more. Now with new potential solutions and prompts from when we presented this same topic back at #CSUN. #A11y https://conference.webaim.org/

hi Internet & #AcademicChatter:
does anyone know of a publication that might be interested in my writing about why I'm leaving #CSUN after my leave of absence—that the #JewishStudies department isn't a safe space for disabled students, let alone #AntiZionist students, let alone #AntiZionistJews?
I started to write it as a thread on Bluesky, but it's too long to condense into posts, too awkward when individual sentences are the length of the character limit here sometimes (yes I write long sentences). but more than that, although I have chosen to leave rather than fight harder, I want this heard.
I want to pitch it somewhere, #Academia #AmWriting #CalState #Freelancing #OpEd #Pitching #Writers #Writing, but I'm not sure where's going to be receptive and I'm open to suggestions.

Two years ago at #CSUN I learned about what became my favorite browser extension, BeeLine Reader. I've been a subscriber ever since.
It's easy to set up on desktop, but has been some struggle to get working on Android. But this week I discovered it works with Microsoft's Edge Canary mobile browser, which has experimental support for extensions. Instructions are here: https://u.osu.edu/keck.60/2023/03/26/beeline-reader-android

There was a time in my life, maybe 30 years ago, when I would have crawled across broken glass on my knees for the opportunnity to attend the #CSUN conference. A friend is trying to convince Sarah to go, and she asked if I had any interest. Thinking about it, I actually don’t have much interest at all. There was a time when I kept up with as much of the access tech goings-on as I could. But, at some point, that world blew right past me. Now, when I read posts from knowledgeable techies, it oftentimes feels like they could be speaking Swahili. I’ve completely lost the plot, and I might be too old at this point to get my mojo back even if I might be so inclined. I don’t like it, it makes me feel like I just checked out, but it is what it is. So I don’t think it would wind up being a good time for me, except maybe crossing paths with some old friends. And, oh, those hotel room prices! #StickerShock to the max!

It's been a few weeks, but #CSUN was a blast! It was fantastic meeting and networking with folks in person who I've only ever interacted with virtually. I made a lot of AeroPress coffee for those that visited our suite, had a lot of great conversations about #TactileGraphics and #Design while showing off my work, played with some cool tech, and came to the realization that I should have started coming to this event earlier in my #a11y career. Looking forward to it again next year!

Thank you everyone for a wonderful week at #CSUNatc24 it was fantastic to meet so many wonderful friends, new and old. We had a great time giving our presentation to a full room, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone again next #CSUN
