For some reason, this film was never on my radar, until recently. Wound up buying a DVD rather than rewarding our corporate overlords' stranglehold on culture.

What a melancholy, somber film. Having been alive in the 1960s, I can see where this film comes from—it's an extrapolation of the then-current and now ongoing battle between ecologists and corporations, to a final resolution. It's The Lorax, as a sci-fi film.

Watched YES, MADAM! (1985) ⭐⭐, one of Michelle Yeoh's first movies. 😆 The script is bonkers bad, but the fight scenes are NOT to be MISSED. Also, every male is either a criminal, or is ineffectual/inept (some are both). And the two women police officers not only are the best at their jobs, but also are the best at martial arts! What more can you want? A little unbalanced (okay, a lot), but worth it for some of the action scenes.

What follows is an Odyssean journey as the two of them crisscross Los Angeles to comb through Elle's past friends and lovers trying to scrape up the money.

Tomlin is the engine of this tale (age 76!), delivering a high-energy, mouthy, abrasive irritant who calls everyone out on their shit. Garner gets her role just right—somewhat unknowing, but also knowing just enough to correct things. Sam Elliott has an excellent cameo as patriarchy personified. Watch this movie if you want to see cranky old people demonstrate to the young that life is complicated and long.

A truffle hunter (Nicolas Cage) living like a hermit in the Oregon woods has his truffle pig stolen during a violent attack. He pairs up with his only contact to the outside world—the young guy he trades truffles to for supplies—to travel to Portland and find his pig.

What a strange buddy movie about love, loss, the past, and regrets. What a somber odyssey. "It wasn't what I was expecting" is the most common comment about this movie, and well, yeah—it's not. I'm not going to give anything away, because, well, that would ruin the fun. This isn't a big, devastating film, but it's good one.

This is one of the most lifelike movies I've ever seen—a straightforward and clear-eyed portrayal of post-trauma depression (and small town life!), without falling into standard filmic tropes. No Hollywood
tension–resolution plot here, and no huge reveals or crisis moments (don't believe the trailer's vibe), just a portrait of a vet sinking in the swamp, and trying not to sink further. Folks who have vets in their families (like me) may find this film hits really close to home.

While lacking the polish of other films nostalgic for this era (Super 8), and sometimes alternately scattered and dragging, this movie delivers parts sweetly rendered by young actors who now are midway through adult careers (filmed in 2004–06, it wasn't released until 2022). Emmi Chen nails high school love. Austin Pendleton surprises as a disillusioned filmmaking magazine editor. Worth watching even just as an artifact of the time.

And though it follows the conventional rom-com structure, as a rom-com it takes the idea of two people who are meant to be together into new ground. What if your true soul mate is someone you are supposed to play Bananagrams with until the end of time?
