Rachele was one of my Zonta Club's women of achievement this year. I was able to present her an award and talk with her for awhile. She is an amazing woman providing doula services (and breastfeeding help, a baby pantry, and more) in rural northern Michigan. This is her C-section story. It took her awhile to be able to tell it, but she finds the courage to do so here.

I have not been able to read lately. Too overwhelmed with... Everything. But I decided to pick Invisible Labor: The Untold Story of the Cesarean Section by Rachel Somerstein.
Personally, I have had two abortions, one vaginal birth, and one planned C-section (high risk pregnancy). While I never experienced trauma, I bled for more than 6 months after my C-section which I assume is far from normal though my doctor never seemed concerned.

In #Idaho, the ONLY exception to the #trauma of unnecessary #labor & delivery or #CSection is if the #woman’s life would be MORE at risk that way. In other words, instead of having minutes-long #abortions, #women will be forced by the state to endure major #surgeries or #traumatic vaginal deliveries, even if that seriously affects their physical & mental #health.

Did you write out birth stories for your children?
Today is a birthday in our house. As with the other birthdays, I am taking a moment to enjoy a coffee and re-read her birth story. Around age 3, this child decided that her birth unfolded differently:
"First, I didn't want to come out and then I did, so I punched my way out and danced for the doctor." 😂
TW: Birth story includes details of a midwife-attended planned home birth, with transfer to hospital for a surgical birth. The overall experience was incredibly positive and empowering, but might be upsetting for some. Of my 6 live births, this remains my most empowering birth experience, even more than the VBAC that followed two years later. <3
