October 2017, Sanlucar/Alcoutim far up the Rio Guadiana (the border river between Portugal and Spain).

There's a little sailor's paradise up there, away from the sea on the navigable river. Either side has a dock although many cruisers simply anchor in the river, which is tidal and so changes direction a couple times per day.

Many sailors have sprouted roots here, in either of the towns or buying up dirt cheap surrounding farmland that has been abandoned due to drought and wildfire risk.

Some boats have been moored in the river a long time, solar panels and batteries removed and mounted on more or less improvised buildings ashore.

Sailors getting stuck here for years talk of "Guadiana glue".

Songbird, our old home, is back on the market, now under Danish flag.

Bittersweet looking at the photos. We've lost touch with the current owner after some weird emails, but it looks like he took reasonable care of the boat. There's some changes, but a lot of our old stuff is still there, even the same spray bottles under the companionway steps :)

There's a new chartplotter and radar installed, which is good, and an offset mounted hydrovane windsteering which didn't really fit, but at least it looks like the swim-ladder is still usable.

Seems the good old Volvo Perkins Prima is still ticking too.

Sad to see the cockpit varnish hasn't been maintained. I spent a lot of work restoring that. Oh well.

Probably still a great boat!

Bad cat. That's her name. Got a passport saying so.

Found by a friend, as kitten, in a dumpster, inside a tied up plastic bag. He adopted her as ships cat.

Loves to get greasy and once snuck aboard a French sailboat, got spooked, jumped into an open locker and disappeared into the voids of the boat, reappearing in a different locker, covered in black engine oil.

The frenchman was grateful, he could never get in there to clean the spill he said.

The iconic rock of Gibraltar, doing its thing:

Pushing up the warm, moist easterly (levanter) seabreeze and cooling it to condensation temperatures, creating a dense cloud that looms over the city. Local British weather at the southern tip of Spain.

Its other thing was to provide a high cannon emplacement overlooking the low plains of Spain, making Gibraltar unconquerable through history and inspire the Montgolfier brothers.

We went back in the water, after finishing painting a few new layers of anti fouling, checking the seacocks, replacing the anodes and a few other things. Other great news is that the parts for the engine have finally arrived so hopefully it will be repaired soon! Oh yeah, and happy birthday Fernando!

#sailing folks: Friends are looking to haul out their 7.5m beam cat somehwere in the La Linea - Cadiz area (Spain) and need a recommendation for a yard that can do osmosis on both hulls and has a good marine electrician who can sort out a badly designed LiFePo4 installation with multiple problems.

The whole installation is full of lessons on how not to do it, and that was done by an official Victron dealer 🤣
