  2. “With care, passion, honesty, and insightfulness, 'Trauma, Tresses & Truth' takes readers on a beautiful journey... Each chapter in this thought-provoking and at times heartbreaking collection invites the reader to learn and unlearn about Blackness, white supremacy, class, and surveillance.”—Treva B. Lindsey, PhD, author of "America, Goddam: Violence, Black Women, and the Struggle for Justice"

On Sunday, April 7th, we're excited to host Lyzette Wanzer, editor of "Trauma, Tresses & Truth," for a conversation with Valerie Carpenter and Barbara Ruth Saunders. Together they'll discuss the politics, policing, and perception of Black and Afro Latina women's natural hair in schools, academia, and corporate America!

Register for this free event, and grab a copy of the book at firestorm.coop/events/3164-tra (link in bio). Not sure if you can make the event? Sign up anyway and you'll receive a link to the recorded conversation when we post it!

  8. A Texas judge has ruled that a high school was not violating the CROWN Act by punishing student Darryl George for the length of his dreadlocks. George has been in in-school suspension or at an off-site disciplinary program for most of the school year since August. The school said that George's hair violated a dress code regarding length of boys' hair; the family argued that protective hairstyles — which are covered by the CROWN act — require a certain amount of length. The family plans to appeal the decision.

  16. Poole defended his district’s policy and wrote that districts with a traditional dress code are safer and had higher academic performance and that “being an American requires conformity.”

That could be the most brazenly un-American remark ever uttered.
