MoJ orders deletion of UK’s largest court reporting archive

Interesting to compare this to government dismay when Meta shut down CrowdTangle; apparently government hates being held to account by third parties:

Enda Leahy, the Courtsdesk chief executive […said]: “We built the only system that could tell journalists what was actually happening in the criminal courts. “HMCTS’s own data proves they can’t do it — their records were accurate 4.2 per cent of the time, 1.6 million cases were heard without any advance notice to the press.

… An HMCTS spokesman said that the press always had and would retain full access to information from the courts to ensure accurate reporting.

Meta shut down CrowdTangle, a widely used tool for tracking misinformation on Facebook and Instagram, replacing it with the Meta Content Library (MCL). The new tool excludes most journalists and offers fewer features for researchers.

Critics argue MCL has only "1% of the features" of CrowdTangle and is less transparent. The timing is concerning, with the U.S. election approaching and increased disinformation activity expected (and already happening per recent reports).

This move aligns with a trend of social media companies limiting independent monitoring of their platforms. Twitter (now X) similarly restricted API access after Elon Musk's acquisition.

Meta has announced it will be abandoning CrowdTangle, its industry leading transparency tool, this August - in the middle of the biggest election year on record.

CrowdTangle is used by thousands of researchers, journalists and advocates to monitor political disinformation and hate speech on Facebook and Instagram.

The decision to kill this crucial tool without an equivalent replacement couldn’t come at a worse time: Elections affecting approximately half of the world’s population are taking place this year. Meta’s irresponsible decision poses a direct threat to our ability to safeguard the integrity of these elections - but we can still stop it.
