ETCS might sort of improve interoperability
But the reason Eurostar is doing this NOW is ETCS is compulsory in Belgium from December 2027
And unlike SNCF, Eurostar isn’t just praying for an exception
You’d have hoped the rail press would know this but 🤷♂️

This is an important step, *but* it is not the most time critical one from here - signing the contract for the Alstom trains and hoping (contrary to their current performance) Alstom can deliver on time is the most important.

In 5 minutes I start a call with a research team working on a contract for a German government ministry. The question: what should Germany learn from the Channel Tunnel construction for how it plans international railway links?
The answer - I think - is very little, because of the specific nature of the Channel Tunnel
And - as ever - this isn't paid. Because everyone else who is asked to contribute has a full time job 🤷♂️
