  1. Today has been a good day. I'm way beyond even my stretch goals for the day. All my parks are now secure from one another and from commons, all my gates open and close easily, all but one of them with working latches.

And I have an unexpected new arrival.

    I'm tired, but I'm pleased.

New calf isn't tagged, and I'm not going to do that tonight even though it will be much harder to catch her tomorrow; but sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

  2. Well, this is unexpected! Gorgon has produced the first calf of the year. She's healthy, and Gorgon is a good, experienced mother, so I'm not at all anxious about it, but I wasn't expecting calves until May.

  3. Three gates on hinges and stock proof. One wooden gate loaded up to be relocated. This feels like a useful afternoon's work.

  4. Well, that's another gate hung. It has to be said Icarus isn't impressed. #Crofting #TheJoyOfCrofting

  5. Bringing new gates and fence posts over the hill. Nothing in the least dodgy about this load, no sirree. Hopefully this means I can get all my parks stock proof and the bulls separated from the cows (and ideally sold) before the cows calve.

  6. Alasdair Maclean’s NIGHT FALLS ON ARDNAMURCHAN (1984) was his only full-length prose work. Hilary Mantel called it

“a book like an animated shipping forecast… You hear the ocean and the voice of a salt-laden gale in this sharp, thoughtful, eloquent memoir”

  7. In March we start our harvesting.
We dig ourselves down out of sight
    in a peat bog,
    continuing perhaps all summer
    when the weather lets us,
    till the job is done…

  8. Well, this afternoon I have found and fixed the earth leak problem on my electric fences; and in the process, of course, I've given myself a full 9.8KV shock. It doesn't injure, but jings! It hurts!

  9. Right! After, frankly, way too much work, I once again have a garden gate which opens properly and easily both ways, and which closes and latches properly and easily. I don't love the galvanised steel gatepost, but it should not need to be replaced again in my lifetime.

  10. Today's cattle trough ice was about 60mm thick. It was really heavy to lift!

  11. First properly hard frost of the winter, so that's taking the ice off the cattle troughs added to the daily jobs.

  12. Today was hardly the ideal day to be grodgelling in the dirt like one of Jinian Footseer's gobblemoles, but then today was not the ideal day for the cattle to demolish the garden gatepost. Fortunately, I did have a replacement steel gatepost ready to go in.

  13. Crofter and Cottar returns and the Napier Commission
    via National Records of Scotland
"The Commission was set up in response to unrest in crofting communities in the Highlands and Islands.

    The written records include:
    * names of estate owners, crofters & cottars
    * land rented to each crofter
    * rent paid
    * other sources of income, and more

  14. In the summer of 1976 I went north to the Isle of Lewis. I saw some superb photos in a pharmacy window that were not for sale. I told my mother-in-law, who I was staying with, about them. She proceeded to 'persuade' the pharmacist, the photographer A.M. MacDonald ARPS, to part with them. They are the most precious things I brought home, though I still feel sorry for MacDonald. They are now with Am Baile, the repository for the crofting counties of Scotland.

  16. Meet Einriði the Robin, who visits us daily on the Croft.

In Norse mythology, the Robin was associated with the god Thor and Einriði is another name for Thor in one of the Sagas, composed around the 10th Century.
It means “The one who rides alone”

  24. CW: Sick animal

Not great. Had to help a neighbour carry a sick old ewe down to their barn, through the rain and mud (slick as ice). Poor thing has withered desperately thin and barely has the strength to walk. Put in a barn to dry, with water and a selection of food, but seems the back teeth have worn away, so she seems to struggle to eat. Still, she had the fight to walk a bit of the way, which is good.

Hopefully it's a peaceful exit, all given.

  25. South Uist, 2021.

It isn't unusual for people (and especially photographers) to get all dreamy about abandoned croft houses such as these when often the reality is much more prosaic. This family croft house simply wasn't up to modern standards, the new family house is the other side of the ridge. There is no real need to demolish this house, so it doesn't get demolished.
