  2. Better Images of AI challenges the dominant visual clichés of artificial intelligence.
Instead of shiny humanoid robots and sci-fi tropes, the project calls for images that reflect how AI actually works: statistical, situated, human-made, and socially embedded.

  3. Maybe the unsettling part of LLMs isn’t that they’ll “wake up.”
It’s that we might fall asleep because autocomplete got just good enough.

Intelligence isn’t just answers; it’s the friction of thinking.
How do we protect that in an age of instant, eerily plausible text?

  11. Have you read @karenhao book #EmpireOfAI, chronicling the rise of Sam Altman and #OpenAI?

    Want to?

It's fantastic - meticulously researched, detailed and an incredible character analysis of one of the most influential people and companies of our time.

My favourite chapter is the last one - what would it take for the Empire of AI to fall?

    In #Melbourne #Naarm?

Come see Karen in conversation with @Kobotic presented by #ReadingsBooks, this Friday night at #RMIT.

Entry is free, tix going fast though.

  16. In a world shaped by AI, what kind of ethics do we need?
@RainerMuehlhoff’s new book The Ethics of AI: Power, Critique, Responsibility offers a power-aware framework for understanding how AI technologies shape subjectivity, prediction, and control.
A compelling manifesto for collective responsibility, regulation, and systemic change.

  18. “Flowers Blooming Backwards Into Noise” is a 22-minute documentary I released in June 2023 for an exhibition at the Forking Room in Seoul and later shown at DEFCON 32. A documentary made entirely with AI to discuss AI images, how they work, and especially the challenges of representation and bias. Watch it here: cyberneticforests.com/news/flo

  19. I’ve combined two pieces into a single essay: “The Hypothetical Image” begins with a history of generative AI in the context of data analytics and Big Data. The second looks at AI images as an aestheticization of Big Data’s politics. I’ve had a really great response to this piece, so I hope you all enjoy it! cyberneticforests.com/news/soc #aiart #criticalai #artcriticism #surveillancecapitalism

  20. Tomorrow at 6pm King's College London are holidng a Film: On Human and Machine Intelligence event hosted by the Department of #DigitalHumanites.

The event will showcase two short films that explore #AI, looking at how its machinic logic and technological creativity transform the creation of meaning.

Heidi Stokes’ #film ‘unhIndered AI’ dives into the mechanisms of AI systems to show their peculiarities and mannerisms. The film is a collaboration with Mercedes Bunz.

Joanna Zylinska’s film is an experiment that mobilises a variety of generative AI models to test the boundaries of #human and machine creativity. Taking Chris Marker’s famous apocalyptic photofilm, La Jetée, as a point of departure, it explores alternative counter-apocalyptic scenarios with a #gender twist.

The event concludes with a human-only reception. Humans need to register here to attend.

Unfortunately, for logistical reasons the event is in-person only.

  22. In the words of the avant-garde novelist Tom McCarthy, there is no truly original creation, just ‘repetition, repetition and repetition’. In which case what’s so unusual about ChatGPT, Dall-E et al? I’d be more inclined to agree with #jamesbridle's complaint that this kind of AI is based on the ‘wholesale appropriation of existing culture’, if more writers and artists didn’t themselves endlessly produce things that are different yet the same.

Talk about ways of being. Can’t the continual writing of books that are published as commercial products on a copyrighted, all rights reserved basis by a proprietorial corporation such as Verso or Penguin be itself seen as a highly predictable, preprogrammed mode of appropriative performance? Like those of AI image and text generators, aren’t outputs of this kind also ‘dependent on the uncredited and unrenumerated work’ of a multitude of others, including plants and machines?
