  1. Barnes & Noble's bi-annnual Criterion sale is on, and my disks arrived. =)

The Cameraman (which includes Spite Marriage) completes my Buster Keaton collection. Same for It Was Just an Accident with regards to Jafar Panahi's post-arrest work. All the Hitchcock stems from watching along with Eyebrow Cinema, one film a week all year long.

But I'm most excited for Resurrection, my favorite film of last year.

  7. Just finished watching “Je vous hais petites filles” (2008) by Yann Gonzalez on Criterion Channel and it’s really good.

How have I not heard of Kate Moran until now?

  13. This Neo-#Noir starts out slowly, but once it is up to speed in the third act it never slows down.

Everything about it is classic noir: everyone’s out for themselves, no one really has morals, and there’s even a ‘hard G’ in Los Angeles.

Sex, money, gutter-living; it’s all here, and presented with a wonderful script and performances.

    Highly recommended.

  15. I have a DVD version of this which isn’t sharp, plus is both contrasty and dark. This edition is far better.

The story is tight (with Wilder and Chandler, why wouldn’t it be?), and for decades set the standard for a new style called ‘#Noir.’ Lighting, score, dialogue rhythm, editing; all are without parallel.

The twists, plus double- and triple-crosses are never expected even after multiple viewings.

    Mandatory viewing.

  17. Despite the nearly immaculate picture and sound quality thanks to an excellent restoration, the real reason to see this is the rock-solid story.

Greatly told in narration, the twists and turns of the tale fit so perfectly together, it could be compared to a Swiss watch. Likewise, the characters are perfect noir performances: hard-living, life is nearly gone from them, their enthusiasm long ago spent.

    Very highly recommended.

  19. When Jules Dassin was blacklisted, he said to himself “████ them, I’m going to France and make movies there.” So he did. This is the result.

A classic noir — no one wins, everyone dies, people double cross each other, there’s oodles of money involved — and everyone is dressed beautifully.

There’s tension galore: despite me seeing it several times before, I was on the edge of my seat to the end.

    Very highly recommended.

  22. Maniac (1980) was really good and intensely disturbing! It nails lot of stuff about serial killers before actual research figured it out too, which sorta adds to the horror.

  24. My goodness what a silly thing this is. Best part is the initial attack in Shanty Town, plus the ending in a mall. In between it gets a bit dodgy, but — wow! — it’s a work of its time, so one needs to cut it a break.

The camera is really active. It’s moving, it’s zooming, the focus is racking… and that’s just the court room scene!

Honestly, this is more entertaining than a lot of things you could see. Give it a go!

Yes, it really has a Criterion edition!

    ★★★☆☆ (but a solid 3!)
