Death by suicide is a male emergency. Although three times as many women as men report suicidal ideation and attempts, the vast majority of deaths by suicide in the U.S. — up to 80% — are among men. The reasons: higher impulsivity, lower reported fear of death, and, crucially, easy access to guns.
The most recent report from Crisis Text Line — a nonprofit working with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to provide free and confidential text-based mental health support — sheds light on another explanation: Men reach out for help a lot less than women.

CW: crisis lines, services - tools to resist exploitation
I'm realizing that #AIDefeat & #NoConsent could be effective tools w/ #Solidarity to resist tech companies bringing "AI" & surveillance to care systems for emotional distress, such as they are. These tools combined with organizing and support to empower people seeking help, who are vulnerable.
It's a paradox, wanting to avoid putting any burden on persons at their most difficult moments. This is also the moment of exploitation for their data and when meaningful consent is not possible for any complicated ask.
This is creative work, these tools could have power of their own. Hopeful.

Cyrano de Bergerac approach to #CrisisLines care is coming.The software "AI" LLM will feed the volunteer their lines with the "probably right thing to say", based on calibration off unethically sourced data. Complete with probabilities of success, real-time effectiveness scores.

Just to clarify that #CrisisTextLine did not end its relationship with #Loris.ai. To my knowledge they still hold shares, though they've sold them down w/in the last year or two to less than majority share.

When someone makes the choice to contact a crisis line, first that's no easy choice.Second, it's generally not a moment when a person's mind is at its most clear.
Third, this may be a child.
My advocacy is to put a stop to the patronizing, disrespectful, repugnant practice of taking advantage of persons who use crisis lines, and the volunteers who answer. The trampling of consent with the boots of "data for good". #CrisisTextLine, #TheTrevorProject, #988Lifeline, #danahboyd.

Between Monday Jan 2 and today Crisis Text Line removed Dr. danah boyd from their website listing of board of director members. I have been critical of her leadership (blog: https://reformcrisistextline.com/deception-has-no-place-here/)
