A mediocre crime novel, where the exact same cold, detached, tedious tone is used for everything, from buttered naan to murders.

Way too much pseudosociology, racist undertones, and unlikable characters.
Very disappointing.

Four ordinary women, friends of convenience, stuck in dead-end jobs, poverty, and unhappy families are drawn into crime in 1990s Japan.
It's a great novel full of betrayals, twists, cynicism, and strong characters, but the ending is disappointing and hyper-violent.

W.R. Burnett's 1949 noir novel The Asphalt Jungle. The story of a heist but mostly the story of the men carrying out the heist. The psychological complexity and the sense of yearning for a largely imaginary past makes it a great crime novel.

Graham Greene’s novella The Third Man was written purely to use as the basis for his screenplay and was not intended for publication. He was later persuaded to publish it. He felt (correctly) that the film was better but the book is quite good.

Peter Marsh’s The Devil’s Daughter, published 1942. Unconventional noir with a femme fatale who doesn't fit the usual mould. A story of love and lust, of hate, of revenge and of suspicion and betrayal. Great stuff.

Castle Skull is an early John Dickson Carr mystery with lots of gothic fiction overtones. Fast-paced and nicely plotted with a wonderful setting - a castle in the form of a human skull. Lots of fun.

August Derleth's Solar Pons stories are among the very few Sherlock Holmes pastiches actually worth reading. Well-crafted and very entertaining and they feel Sherlockian. Derleth doesn’t make the mistake of trying for a tongue-in-cheek flavour.

Mickey Spillane’s 1964 novel The Snake is a sequel to The Girl Hunters and you absolutely must read The Girl Hunters first. This is a very different Mike Hammer - older, wiser and sadder. Both books are great, but read the earlier books first.

Sin Pit (1954) is Paul S. Meskil’s only novel. It's seriously hardboiled, most definitely noir and pretty sleazy. This is the seamy underside of 1950s America. A cynical cop gets drawn into a nightmare world of lust. Excellent book.

Leslie Charteris's The Saint Goes West, a 1942 collection of three Saint novellas. A transitional slightly Americanised version of Simon Templar which for me works less well than the earlier and later versions. But the stories are excellent.

W.R. Burnett's High Sierra, a great noir novel by a great writer. A bank robber just out of jail gets mixed up in a heist with a bunch of amateurs and a girl. He used to be a big shot. Now he's tired and fatalistic. The book packs a real punch.

Gang Rumble, a 1958 juvenile delinquent potboiler by Edward S. Aarons writing as Edward Ronns. Two young punks get closer and closer to the edge of insanity. Aarons refuses to sentimentalise juvenile delinquents. Has a few nice noirish touches.

John Dickson Carr’s The Devil in Velvet (1951) is certainly an unconventional detective novel. How many fictional detectives enlist Satan's help to solve the crime? And it involves time travel. Definitely not your average crime novel. I love it.

I started "Hamlet, Revenge!“ by Michael Innes. It seems to me ridiculously mannerist and self consciously meta, but I’m enjoying it immensely (probably because of its #benoitblanc like atmosphere). If you are into Dorothy Sayers brainy and literary mysteries , you might like this.

I‘m currently reading „Death of an Author“ by E. C. R. #Lorac, written literally decades before #Barthes, and Google really has a hard time coming up with results that are not completely useless to a little confusing. I think I would be relatively easy to concoct a theory about Barthes ripping of an English woman writer writing under pseudonym, just based on the search snippets. (Fun fact: The book discusses the socioeconomic functions of authorship.)
