  4. Yesterday, on the day of Oraza Bayram, at the #FreeAzov rally I held a sign that read "We are waiting for them" in Crimean Tatar and English. It was dedicated to Ernest Baranov, a #CrimeanTatar soldier from the 503rd Marine Battalion. He has been missing for nearly three years, but his parents still believe he is in captivity.

Many #CrimeanTatars have been fighting in Ukraine’s Armed Forces since the war began in 2014, and many more joined in 2022. For safety reasons we don’t know all their names, but that doesn’t stop us from believing with all our hearts in their return and praying for their lives. We are waiting for our defenders, and we remember our heroes — both those who are still with us and those who have fallen.

  6. An excellent conversation with Rory Finnin on the subject of Crimean Tatars and his recent book, Blood of Others. He talks about Crimean Tatar culture, and the power of literature to change our world - what he calls the 'poetics of solidarity'.

  7. I especially enjoyed the question about Crimean Tatar culture available to us in the wider world.

As a result of this question I learned that Homeward - a Crimean Tatar film directed by Nariman Aliev - is available to watch in the UK on iPlayer! I am looking forward to watching it.

  8. A really interesting talk about Crimea and Crimean Tatars. Featuring speakers Alim Aliev, Elmira Muratova, Emine Ziyatdinova, Rory Finnin.

The talk took place in May, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Sürgünlik or Deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944.

They talk about the Sürgünlik, but also life for Crimean Tatars over the recent decades and other topics.

  10. On this day, 1944, the Deportation of Crimean Tatars began. All the women, children, elderly loaded onto cattle wagons and exiled across the soviet union.

When the men returned home from fighting the Germans they found their families gone and russians living in their homes.

As a result of the Deportation, or Sürgünlik, 46% of the Crimean Tatar population died. Families torn apart. Culture and history destroyed.

  14. Incredible article by @avedjema about some Crimean Tatar women and their struggles against repression. I loved reading about the lives of these women. And was very moved to see their photos as youngsters and elders, fighting the same fight their whole life. We have to help ensure their victory forever.

The article is in Ukrainian but is readable using a translator. Very worth doing that.

  15. Brilliant article from @timkmak, interviewing Dilaver Saidakhmetov about Crimean Tatars and what Ramadan means to them and their culture. Especially moved by how the private act of fasting helped them to hold onto their identity under deportation, exile and russian repressions.
