  1. A University of Auckland student has entered the NZ record book after being caught using pervert glasses to cheat in an exam.

The university says the student received "a penalty". Unfortunately it's not a public flogging.

  2. Reuters on Meta: “The company is facing a cash squeeze and investor scrutiny due to its dizzying AI spending, heightening the pressure to find savings. Meta plans to invest at least $130 billion in AI chips and other infrastructure this year, which analysts expect will eat up its operating cash for 2026, estimates from LSEG show.”

That is, throw more capital at AI rather than at working smarter. So typical of AI-hype. Purported new structure nor the thinking behind it very revolutionary either; swapping one rigidity for another with fewer staff & everyone “agile”. Meta did not “make available” anyone from within who Reuters wanted to interview. Reuters did a good job reporting given the difficulties of getting information.

Some good memes in the Reuters article too, like “Let them eat Snacks” poking fun at a recent notorious Meta product & the snack quality being improved to palliate the stroppy workers (how patronising, hope everyone who can gets out unscathed).

  3. In case you thought it was just a few creeps who wanted to make their Facebook / Meta "Pervert Glasses" record video without the tell-tale indicator light showing, here is a product mass-produced in a Chinese factory that enables it:

    aliexpress.com/item/1005010286

Lots of "Excellent product, fits perfectly the Rayban Meta Wayfare, hides the indicator LED well"-type comments. And you get two of them for $8 Canadian, including shipping.

Someone had to design this product and make the plastic-injection moulds to mass-produce this. That's expensive. They expect to sell many thousands of them.

So you are, in case you were questioning it, fully justified in assuming anyone wearing Pervert Glasses is, indeed, a pervert and that they are recording you without your consent. The traditional response to this is to non-consensually introduce their nose to your fist, rip the glasses from their face, and stomp them flat.

And if you see someone do so, NO YOU DIDN'T.

  4. @iamgerardthomas If we can’t rely on the techbro #billionaires to be socially responsible then I think an app on our phones which detects nearby #pervertglasses #creepglasses and emits a piercing warning siren would be in order. Shame the owners in public.

  5. Tiens. C'est la première fois que j'en vois un vrai dans la nature avec les #CreepGlasses.
On va dire que c'est le seul à ne pas mériter d'être flouté hein.

  6. How does the internet age verification push make sense, ostensibly to protect children, if internet spy devices just became widely wearable?

More good old patriarchal victim blaming double standards. Children can’t decide their url with freedom but some guy on a sex registry gets to comb over his footage fodder later.

Freedom in the US is mostly freedom to, and mostly for the same people who all the freedoms for the last two hundred and two score years.

  7. If, as reports suggest, Facebook [1] is going to release a version of their creep glasses that are (a) always recording, and which (b) do *not* have a tell-tale indicator that they are recording, then I would like to inform you that you have permission to punch anyone wearing them square in the face repeatedly until the glasses fall off their head. You may then stomp them. [2]

    I don't make the rules.

Remember: the way we make these creepy stalkerware things go away is the same way we made Google Glass go away - social opprobrium. "Glasshole" worked. Insult, criticize, point and laugh at, loudly announce "this creep is recording you without permission", do it all. Ensure that no one wants to take the chance of leaving their house with these things on their face. Make it a career/social-life-limiting-move to wear them.

[1] Don't call them "Meta". Don't help them rebrand away from a name they wanted to drop because it got too toxic. Similarly don't call Google "Alphabet".

[2] The glasses. Or maybe the wearer, your choice.

  8. @zuck i will refuse to talk to people who wear this #creepglasses
This is sick absolutely sick stuff, stop it.

  9. There are no "smart glasses".

Meta/Facebook and Ray-Ban would like you to call them that, but you shouldn't. You should call them by their proper, accurate name.

That is "creep glasses". People who wear them are "glassholes".

If you see anyone wearing them in public, you should stop what you're doing, point dramatically at them, and loudly say "Hey, this creep is recording you without your permission! He's a glasshole!" [1]. Ignore any protests of "I'm not recording!", because the tell-tale indicator is trivially bypassed, so you *have* to assume every user is recording, all the time.

Mock them. Insult them. Shun them. Make sure everyone knows they're a creep. If you know someone who has creep glasses, make sure they never, ever wear them in your presence. Warn everyone you know about them.

What killed creep glasses the last time around - remember Google Glass? - was social opprobrium. Do it again. Make it *extremely* uncomfortable to be caught wearing them in public, so they *stop* fucking wearing them in public. You want them gathering dust, in shame, in the back of a drawer somewhere. You want the creep owner to feel a deep pang of regret every time they think about them.

[1] It will be a "he". I guarantee it.

  10. Surveillance glasses recording people without their knowledge and consent, and especially if they collect nonconsensual data using AI or facial recognition, need to be banned and illegal to sell everywhere.

Tell your local representatives they need to outlaw this harmful technology.

    Privacy is a human right.
    We need to defend it.

  12. I saw a display for Meta's Ray-Ban Creep-Glasses™️ at the store.

It was very difficult to control my nausea and not throw up on it 🤢

Honestly, I couldn't blame anyone who were not able to stop themselves 👓🤮

  13. Never call them smart glasses,
    Always call them creep glasses.

    Because that's what they are.
