Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd, Jazz Samba, 1962 on Verve

Early work in the bossa nova trend in the US, recorded at Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church in DC and released two years before Getz/Gilberto. Includes “Desafinado” (which was also on Getz/Gilberto) and “Samba de Uma Nota” composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2023 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue on Verve by UMG / UMe, which is a fantastic pressing.

Paul Desmond, Pure Desmond, 1975 on CTI Records

Desmond (who composed Take Five and was a critical part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet) playing here with Ron Carter, Ed Bickert, and Connie Kay – recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in 1974 and produced by Creed Taylor.

One of five albums Desmond put out on CTI in the late 60s and 70s. including Summertime and Skylark (with Gabor Szabo). It’s very fusion, and features Ed Bickert on guitar as much as (or more so than) Desmond.

My copy, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR, is a 1975 issue with Van Gelder in the runouts.

Stan Getz & Bill Evans, Previously Unreleased Recordings, 1974 on Verve

Sometimes just referred to as Stan Getz & Bill Evans, this was recorded in 1964 but not released until 1974. Ron Carter (A side) and Richard Davis (B side) on bass, with Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs NJ and produced by Creed Taylor.

There’s a whole series of “Previously Unreleased Recordings” advertised on the rear jacket. Beautiful sounding LP well packaged.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is of the 2024 UMG/UMe reissue, overseen by Chad Kassem from Acoustic Sounds.

I have at least one more piece to write based on some history from #johnnyotis - It explains a great deal about why Esther made some of the choices she did.

For today though, I want to remember a ballsy woman who once walked into Creed Taylors office with a baseball bat under her fur coat to demand her royalty check.

Hey, citizens of the fediverse - I just wanted to remember the great Grover Washington, Jr. who left us this day, 25-years ago. Far too soon. Such a talent, such a nice, kind man.

Just 5-days after celebrating his 56th birthday, Grover had a heart attack in the green room, after performing and recording four songs for “The Saturday Early Show”, at CBS Studios in New York City. He was pronounced dead at 7:30pm that day, December 17th, 1999, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

He was still working in a department store when his first

Creed Taylor Month, established by A&M CTI in 1968, celebrates the influential music producer Creed Taylor. This year features a 1994 audio interview with Taylor by Michael Jarrett, detailing his craftsmanship in album production. My Tamiko Jones post is finally live. This was a massive 3-month project, and includes a mix of her music with previously unheard tracks from the Tonight Show that are not available in any other format.

Jones was one of the few people to speak out at longtime Recording Academy President Michael Greene, who abruptly resigned in 2002.

I must admit I've never seen CD's that were not packaged in plastic cases or cheap paper sleeves. These Japanese King Records releases are gorgeous. Very tactile just more like shrunk gatefold albums.

His picture from his social commentary "Study in Gray" - The Dull Life of Women in 1969 was used without permission or payment it seems on the cover of #DonSebesky album "Rape Of El Morro". I've had two great interviews this weekend with Alen MacWeeney. Alen was the ying to Pete Turners yang for album covers at CTI/KUDU. Where #PeteTurner did abstract, brightly colored covers that rarely included the artist, Alen included detailed closely cropped covers of the artist with a muted palate.
