  1. Stan Getz & Bill Evans, Previously Unreleased Recordings, 1974 on Verve

Sometimes just referred to as Stan Getz & Bill Evans, this was recorded in 1964 but not released until 1974. Ron Carter (A side) and Richard Davis (B side) on bass, with Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs NJ and produced by Creed Taylor.

There’s a whole series of “Previously Unreleased Recordings” advertised on the rear jacket. Beautiful sounding LP well packaged.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is of the 2024 UMG/UMe reissue, overseen by Chad Kassem from Acoustic Sounds.

  2. Remembering Esther Phillips on the day she would have been 89-years old.

I've written a lot about Esther, I have a soft spot for her singing and am fascinated by her life story.

I have at least one more piece to write based on some history from #johnnyotis - It explains a great deal about why Esther made some of the choices she did.

For today though, I want to remember a ballsy woman who once walked into Creed Taylors office with a baseball bat under her fur coat to demand her royalty check.

  3. Hey, citizens of the fediverse - I just wanted to remember the great Grover Washington, Jr. who left us this day, 25-years ago. Far too soon. Such a talent, such a nice, kind man.

Just 5-days after celebrating his 56th birthday, Grover had a heart attack in the green room, after performing and recording four songs for “The Saturday Early Show”, at CBS Studios in New York City. He was pronounced dead at 7:30pm that day, December 17th, 1999, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

He was still working in a department store when his first

  4. Remembering #chrisconnor on her born day, this day in 1927. #creedtaylor recordings with Chris in August 1954 essentially saved #guswildi 's fledgling #bethlemrecords - Their recordings sound so "grown-up" both Creed and Chris were in their mid-20's.

  5. It's really quite interesting what an oversize role agents and managers played and continue to play in the music business. You can't really talk about #CreedTaylor without talking about #ClarenceAvant - you can't talk about Clarence without talking about #JoeGlaser and Joe without talking about the mafia and #louisarmstrong

    Meanwhile, 25-years they say?

**Deadmau5 has signed with CAA for global representation**, moving over from his previous agency, UTA. He continues to be managed by Seven20 and is represented in PR by Falcon Publicity. Known for his groundbreaking live shows and innovative music, Deadmau5 recently celebrated his 25-year career with his Retro5pective shows, performing at iconic venues like the Hollywood Bowl and Red Rocks. His distinctive Cube V3 stage setup returned for these events, enhancing the experience with immersive visuals and classic hits like Ghosts 'n' Stuff and The Veldt.

  6. Creed Taylor Month 2024

Creed Taylor Month, established by A&M CTI in 1968, celebrates the influential music producer Creed Taylor. This year features a 1994 audio interview with Taylor by Michael Jarrett, detailing his craftsmanship in album production. Jarrett, a retired music scholar, contributed to various music publications, highlighting Taylor’s significant role in jazz.

  7. My Tamiko Jones post is finally live. This was a massive 3-month project, and includes a mix of her music with previously unheard tracks from the Tonight Show that are not available in any other format.

Jones was one of the few people to speak out at longtime Recording Academy President Michael Greene, who abruptly resigned in 2002.

  8. Sounds: Supermarket Jazz

It's fairly well know that Creed's production techniques were not universally liked. Creed himself knew that and was often quite dismissive of critics in general. I've often quoted Creed himself on this, as early as 1963 he said:

These men[musicians], no longer concern themselves with critical limitations, imposed by journalists within the jazz frat

  9. Creed Taylor in 1979

Today marks what would have been the 95th birthday of Creed Taylor, a producer celebrated for his subtle yet impactful influence in the jazz music industry. Despite facing significant challenges, including CTI’s bankruptcy in 1978, Taylor's dedication to crossover music has left a lasting legacy, exemplified by

  10. To all the young bands and producers out there, if your first album doesn't work out, rethink and change direction.

I listen to a lot of really odd and offbeat albums that #CreedTaylor produced. (see my recent review of Mondo Cane #2). It's taken me a while to get a copy of #DonnaSummer and #giorgiomoroder first album, it's truly bland and mediocre. 18-months later they would rule the world.

  11. Mondo Cane #2 – The Worst Jazz Album Creed Produced?

Pop goes the ondioline - A really quite unusual production by Creed Taylor, but was it jazz? Kai Winding's "Mondo Cane #2" despite consisting of 12 short tracks diverges into space-era pop with Hawaiian themes, not pure jazz. Winding plays the ondioline on several tracks, attempting to capitalize on earlier success. A lo

  12. I must admit I've never seen CD's that were not packaged in plastic cases or cheap paper sleeves. These Japanese King Records releases are gorgeous. Very tactile just more like shrunk gatefold albums.

  13. Working on post to mark the day in 1962 when Creed Taylor and Rudy Van Gelder recorded Jack Teagarden.

Converting a bunch of old videos from laserdisc. Don't do this much these days, always forget which cables have to be plugged where... But off and running.

Anyone any idea who the drummer is in the second picture? #creedtaylor #rudyvangelder #Verve #jackteagarden

  14. Remembering Chris Connor on her born day.

It was a fascinating period in the mad men era, young trumpet player comes back from Korea, picks up production job in NY City without any practical history.

  15. Remembering Rudy Van Gelder on his born day. Rudy crafted much of the sound that we understand as (east coast) jazz these days. In an era of non-disposable equipment, Rudy developed habits in recording that lasted the test of time.

That said, he wasn't slow in adopting new technology, and wasn't afraid of taking on the establishment when it came to digital vs analog.

  16. CTI Record Streams

While I continue working on a couple of research projects that have consumed the past 6-weeks, I realized I hadn't posted here much, although I continue to dance of the grave of what used to be social-media daily. Here is a brief post on an interesting stream I've been listening too while screaming into the void - that the internet has become.

I've got the posters, got the album, and now the t-shirt...

Also, got to love Fred Wesley on this Hank Crawford's Back album.

  19. Obviously I'm biased, #PeteTurner worked hand-in-hand with #CreedTaylor from 1959 but Turner and his generation lifestyle / art pictures were almost the second original American art form between 1955 and at least 1978 - color, image, composure, layout, all just so good. Obvs #BobCiano contributed design concepts but Turner alone made the art of the photograph on album covers. Yes Francis Woolf, Chuck Stewart and many others, but they mostly did (great) pictures of people..

  21. It's been a fun few times talking to and poking about in the photographic, video and painting archive of Alan Kaplan. His picture from his social commentary "Study in Gray" - The Dull Life of Women in 1969 was used without permission or payment it seems on the cover of #DonSebesky album "Rape Of El Morro". In that context it's dark and brooding, seen in it's original context it takes on a whole different perspective. #CTIrecords #CreedTaylor
