  1. #Creationists love the idea that the #genetic #code and #computer code are fundamentally the same thing. Since of course #programs are #designed (not always #intelligently, but that's another post) they think this is proof that life was too.

They seize on one-liners from those they regard as infidels and heretics, because then they can say, "See? Even unbelievers admit that ..." Bill Gates and Richard Dawkins, both known for going outside their lanes, are popular choices. Gates: "#DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created." Dawkins: "I'm fascinated by the idea that genetics is digital. A #gene is a long sequence of coded letters, like computer information."

I get why this is a popular analogy. Unfortunately, it's also a bad one. Those of us with one foot in each field know the differences far outweigh the similarities. Which leads me to the following epigram:

Many #programmers say genes look like code. Many #biologists say code looks like genes. No #bioinformaticist says either.

  3. Young-Earth #Creationists Debunked (Again)

YECs claimed the lack of old #supernova remnants proved a young #universe. Wrong.

New #Radioteleskope surveys in #Australia just found dozens of ancient supernova remnants that were too faint to detect before.

The "missing" remnants weren't missing - they were just hard to see because they fade over time and emit mainly radio waves.

Bottom line: The universe is old. Science wins. 🔭

  4. Less than two weeks in, and already the #creationists are stirring - freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngul "they can’t just switch to stuffing creationism into science curricula (yet), so they instead water down and weaken the science, replacing “#evolution” with fuzzy pseudonyms." #trump #antiscience

  6. Good look at a bad problem. The author is a friend from grad schol at the #University of #Colorado, where she was a faculty member when I was a grad student. She’s since gone on to bigger and better things, and I’ve gone on to … well, things.

Anyway. I’ve never been particularly worried about #Cylons, #Skynet, etc. Humans doing stupid human tricks, and using #AI to do them much faster, OTOH, yeah.

The internet community of anti-science #cranks is an example of #model #collapse happening at human speed. #Antivaxers, #creationists, #climate change #deniers et al. prey on people with legitimate questions about some particular aspect of the broad #consensus. Those people often go down an increasingly loony rabbit hole, and end up propagating the absurdity, sometimes adding their own bizarre spin which their new-found colleagues happily add to the ideology.

If this becomes part of the #academic ecosystem, with AI reviewers approving AI-generated #papers and no human checks on the process, the scholarly corpus will become hopelessly contaminated. I have no idea what to do about that.

  8. It’s so cute when #creationists try to sound sciencey. Like little kids misusing big words to try to impress the grown-ups.

  12. One common feature of various anti-science ideologies is that their adherents lack a sense of scale. #FlatEarthers don’t understand distance, #creationists don’t understand time, #climate change #denialists don’t understand levels of emissions or rate of temperature change, #antivaxers don’t understand population morbidity and mortality. Probably other types of looniness with which I’m less familiar have the same underlying problem.

In a way I sympathize with this, because the numbers are so far outside normal human experience. But learn the #math and suddenly everything makes a lot more sense. We’re not talking about anything particularly advanced. Just grasp that intution breaks down when measuring something very large or very small.

  14. "Dr." Glenn Beck is an American right-wing "commentator", former rodeo clown, former Fox News clown, and high school graduate who got lucky. He presented his eponymous Glenn Beck Show on the Fox News cartoon channel until it was dropped in 2011 due to low ratings.

He currently has his own radio show and originally appeared on CNN's Headline News until viewers couldn't take it anymore (rumors that they were also mad as hell are slightly exaggerated). Beck now owns the subscription-based internet network The Blaze (formerly GBTV), which his Fox show was transferred to in September 2011. The network somehow made it onto Dish Network; however, it has not been picked up by the many cable providers Beck thought it would have, despite his aggressive campaign to get it on every cable plan in America.

  15. #Creationists Battling Over #Texas #SchoolBooks

    sensuouscurmudgeon.wordpress.c

It’s amusing to note that after a few years of apparently normal behavior, the Texas #BoardofEducation may be back in the news again. We found this at a site called #TexasValues. Their post — it’s actually a press release — is titled Alert! Did You Come From a Monkey?, and it has no author’s by-line.

  19. There are numerous Biblical prophecies, some vaguely fulfilled, others strangely unfulfilled. Of course, like the #Bible, the Quran also contains what its followers maintain are fulfilled prophesies. #Christians tend to find these unconvincing or silly — which is coincidentally the attitude which non-Christians have towards the claimed biblical prophecies.

Some Christians claim that fulfilled prophecies — if they actually existed — would prove that the Bible is inerrant or even literally true. #Creationists conclude it is accurate even on scientific subjects.

This article examines various prophecies from the Bible and gives an analysis of whether or not they have been fulfilled.

  20. CW: Twitter, misinformation

This is exactly why it's best not to debate (etc.) pseudo-science quacks and cranks – #anti-#vaccine, #climate #deniers, #creationists, etc.

Their ability to make money (and continue to spread and profit from misinformation) relies on engagement with #scientists and other #scholars.

Instead spread #truth, use real #data from real experts, and amplify others who are doing the same.

    Toot/Tweet/speak about #positive #solutions while being #honest about #reality.

  21. This is deeply wrong, but it’s an interesting kind of wrong.

Our perception of the past telescopes: there’s the recent past, what we remember; the middle past, what our parents and grandparents remember; the long past, out of living memory but still preserved in familiar stories; and everything else. As I’ve said before, a lot of Americans’ idea of human #history seems to go roughly as follows:

    1. #Cavemen.
    2. #Pyramids.
    3. #Jesus.
    4. Robin Hood and King Arthur.
    5. #Columbus and #pirates.
    6. #Pilgrims and George Washington.
    7. #Cowboys.
    8. World War Two. (One must have happened somewhere?)
    9. #Hippies and #Vietnam.
    10. The real world begins with the momentous event of my birth.

Nor is this uniquely an American problem—some places have better educational systems than others, but I think people everywhere hold similar mythologized versions of world events leading uniquely and inevitably to their own central place in the world.

So here’s an extreme version of the same phenomenon applied to natural history. Most reasonably educated people have some idea that not all prehistoric animals lived at the same time (although poor #Dimetrodon is forever going to be mixed in with #dinosaurs) but they do tend to lump enormous spans of time together: #mammoths and #sabertooths, before that all dinosaurs all at once, and before that … I dunno … jellyfish or something.

#Creationists, of course, turn it up to 11.
