  1. I got really tired of Mass Effect Legendary Edition breaking every other week because of the "EA App" crapware. If you're looking for a fix, "Mass Effect Legendary Edition nocd" is a pretty nice search query.

  3. I’m going back to my original love🍎Apple🍏.

Ancient history: I fell in love🥰 with the Apple IIe waaaay back in the early 80’s. Even tho it was monochrome (green on black) it was Superior to my Commodore at home 🏡 in almost all aspects. Thru the years I have happily & successfully supported whatever cheap HW & crap💩ware that other vendors produced, i.e. Atari, IBM, M$, Intel, Google, Alphabet … ¡no mas!

  4. New phone for my parents, and dealing with the registration for itsme and banking apps.

Itsme requires this connective app on PC, it kept telling me it needed an upgrade, proceeded to 'install' it with a success message, and then gave back this same screen urging me to upgrade.

Solution: uninstall it from Windows and let it do a fresh install. #crapware #itsme #connective

  10. I cannot fathom that, after the CrowdStrike debacle, gaming companies still force players to install kernel modules on their machines. It's a cybersecurity nightmare, and unless you have a dedicated gaming PC, you should definitely say no.

  14. This report about #Wacom graphics tablets is disturbing for a couple of reasons.

    1. They are surveilling users of their #tablet - a human-interface device analogous to a mouse or trackball - recording every application you open, or when you switch between windows of different applications. They are collecting this data via a trip through Google Analytics, aka Spyware Central. There is no possible way to justify collection of this particular data; it is none of their damn business how long you have your drawing program focused before switching to your browser and back again. The author notes their privacy policy really doesn't describe this collection of data correctly, so there really can't be informed consent in the first place.

    2. Why on earth is it possible in #Apple #OSX / #MacOS for a USB human interface device driver to capture this information in the first place? Apple shares a big slice of the blame here - this should just simply not be possible for the driver to collect in the first place. Having such a driver allowed to place outgoing HTTP requests is also a big "WTF are they thinking?" moment.

  18. Going through my machine looking for something, I found I still had left over crap from Adobe and their invassive creative suite.

I then did a registry search and found a load more bits and pieces in there too.

Would be nice if uninstall actually did just that, and not some cosmetic pretence of a removal.

So 3 months after uninstalling Adobe, I am now a little more free, not saying free, yet. 😉

  20. #Microsoft whole thing with #Recall is looking more and more fishy. Turns out that Recall code is needed in bits and pieces of the new explorer. Nuke Recall off the system as of 24H2, and you break the new file explorer.

Either these people have terrible code management, or microsoft is intentionally waging a dependency war on people uninstalling and neutering their #crapware and normalization of constant surveillance (at the workplace, through at home). And honestly, TPOASISID. So. Fuck MS.

  24. I'm reading @philvenables 's Security and Ten Laws of Technology and finding out about Wirth's Law is making me really sad.

"software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware becomes faster"

The thing that makes me most sad is that this was coined in 1995 and it's still accurate.

Why? What is the fundamental incentive which makes this law true?

( Sorry for the shitty misspelled Dall-E image attached, sunk cost fallacy dictates that I must post it because I have spent too much time trying to get GPT to generate it... Pro tip, "cross-stitch" is apparently objectionable and GPT will refuse to create it :-D )

  26. There's what looks like a good article from arstechnica on how to get rid of the obnoxious nonsense you get after windows 11 install.
Personally, I plan to stick with Windows 10 to the bitter end - after all Windows 10 was sold as the last ever version of Windows!

  28. LOL, a month ago @arstechnica reported windows was auto-installing "HP Smart" on PCs without HP printers (arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/1)

    Still happening, *today*

Bonus, despite denying permission to "make changes to this device" at boot, it still gets permission to use the camera

(I'm sure this is all plain vanilla incompetence, but one could definitely come up with a story involving malice)

A company I work for uses it; it's pretty typical remote-administration, helpdesk-assistance type stuff as far as I know. It's installed on all company machines, including the one they sent me.

  35. @jrychter I can just confirm what the others already have said: #Windows has become #bloated #crapware, especially starting with Windows 10 because of all the tracking/telemetry and ads. Candy Crush pre-installed? SERIOUSLY?!

  36. This is the worst part of all software being rentware nowadays, one day the owner decides he likes pink, so he walks in and paints all your walls pink.

You can try to refuse but he will knock on your door every morning asking, how about today?

And if you ignore him long enough, your locks stop working, then your microwave complains it won't work without pink walls, then your bank...

I had removed Edge and it returned somehow after an update? Paint triggered to open it... and now I have a 'search bar'?

  43. Fedora locked me out. I think I got my password wrong too many times late last night.

Turns out there's a known bug in Fedora since 2018: if you get locked out, the lockout never resets, and you can't start in single-user rescue mode either, it just tells you the root account is locked.

So I had to burn a live ISO, boot from that, and work out how to manually decrypt my LUKS-encrypted SSDs. Then it turns out that RAID-1 is handled by having two regular volumes and... something, there seems to be no superblock so mdadm won't touch it and nor will the GUI disk manager in the live boot.

So I had to mount each volume in turn, set up a chroot, chroot in and reset passwords, unmount it all, and finally reboot and log in.

To say that I am unhappy about spending my morning this way is an understatement. Definitely switching to a Mac now, work's got one on order for me. #Fedora #crapware

  45. Wow, Samsung packs their phones with a system partition that's *60GB* in size, and most of that is crapware. There's a reason I wouldn't buy a Samsung phone, and if I did, I'd root the thing and install a custom ROM first thing. Say what you want about iOS, Apple would never ship a phone stuffed to the gills with crapware like that.

  46. #bloatware pushes the Galaxy S23 Android OS to an incredible 60GB | Ars Technica

#samsung sells space in its devices to the highest bidder via pre-installed #crapware. A company like #facebook will buy a spot on Samsung's system partition, where it can get more intrusive system permissions that aren't granted to app store apps, letting it more effectively #spy on users.
