An impressive crane fly from this morning.

Giant crane fly (Tipula abdominalis). If you include the legs it was approximately 5 inches in length, so definitely a fly of unusual size (FOUS). I've cropped the image to show how pretty the thorax is. #diptera #cranefly #flies #entomology #tipula #tipulidae #insects #nature

Sometimes I swear creatures understand us even if they can't speak or understand our language.
I was working in my studio when I saw a cranefly. I kept working but started talking to them about how it's a shame they became trapped inside and I should find a way to get them back outside where they'd be happy. As soon as I finished what I was doing they flew to me, landing on my shirt, and we went outside where they could fly free. #cranefly #creature #nature #life -

There are monsters around! With my luck re pests in my plant nursery this year (still fighting the fungus gnats infestation with SP nematodes, sea algae soaks, fans, UV "mosquito lamp" and lots and lots of sticky tape) this #CraneFly is most likely one of the #Tipulidae that are considered pests in Europe (is it Tipula paludosa?) as their larvae attack seedling roots and stems. Which is exactly what fungus gnat larvae were doing already so... [insert random profanities].
About photos, pardon the odd colours as this crane fly thought to rest under my full-spectrum LEDs on a chili plant and it's being illuminated by, well, all colours of the rainbow really.

In between thunderstorms yesterday I looked for insects in my yard. I think this is Gnophomyia tristissima, a fun insect to photograph because you can jostle the leaf and they simply don't care. Very chill. Larvae are said to develop inside rotting wood. #insects #fly #diptera #cranefly #nature #entomology

A beautiful crane fly, hanging inside a sunlit bush. (This is who I was trying to photograph when I took the picture of the syrphid fly I posted yesterday. I recommend sticking your head under a bush occasionally. There's a whole other world in there.)
