  3. Weekly output: Craig Newmark + Count von Count, T-Mobile freebies, Android fake call detection, election security

I’m on my way to the other half of the world tonight–once again, I’m speaking at Web Summit Rio. This time the organizers (who as per our usual arrangement are picking up airfare and lodging) have me moderating four panels. All of them are about AI in some way, and two only got added to my schedule this weekend.

6/1/2026: ‘Craigslist Founder Teams Up With a Muppet to Persuade People to Stop Clicking on Scams, PCMag

For the second time in six months, I had a video conversation with Craiglist founder-turned philanthropist about his Take9 efforts to get people to take a beat before clicking through sketchy links. This time, we discussed how Newmark has enlisted the help of a vaguely vampiric purple potentate–Sesame Street’s Count von Count–in this effort.

6/2/2026: T-Mobile Offers Fresh Set of Freebies for 10th Anniversary of T-Mobile Tuesdays, PCMag

T-Mobile offered an advance on this news but got the final version of their press release to me way too late in the workday on Monday. My editors were fine with me filing something Tuesday afternoon.

6/3/2026: Google Will Soon Spot Fake Calls on Supported Android Phones, PCMag

I noted some of the software dependencies of the new fake-call-detection feature, but Ars Technica’s Ryan Whitwam (once again) went into much more detail about them in his writeup.

6/3/2026: Report Cites Misinformation As Key Threat to Election Security, Doesn’t Name the Biggest Offenders, PCMag

The chance to quiz one of Check Point’s security experts about this report made for a more interesting post. Having to update it with a clarification about leaked credentials from the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue made for a more time-consuming post.

  7. Weekly output: Uber and Lucid’s robotaxi, Craig Newmark on dodging scams, Jensen Huang on engineering, Better Offline podcast

I got back from CES Friday morning, which means I’ve now more or less caught up with my sleep deficit from those frenetic five days in Las Vegas but still have a lot of writing to do.

1/5/2026: This Is the Robotaxi That Lucid and Nuro Are Building for Uber, PCMag

I wrote the first version of this off an embargoed copy of Uber’s announcement, then did an in-person inspection of Uber’s forthcoming self-driving version of the Lucid Gravity electric vehicle and updated the story two days later.

1/7/2026: Craiglist’s founder has some simple rules for not losing your mind—or money—on the internet, Fast Company

My video interview with Craig Newmark happened back in December–without any PR minder on the call–but online scams are an unfortunately evergreen topic.

1/7/2026: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: This Is Why I’m Lucky to Be an Engineer, PCMag

It was a treat to see Huang accept the engineering group IEEE’s annual medal of honor at a private event and gush a little about his chosen profession–the same one that my dad picked in college.

1/8/2026: CES 2026: Part Seven (Thursday), Better Offline

As I did last year, I wrapped up CES by joining tech gadfly Ed Zitron’s Better Offline podcast at the hotel suite he booked in Vegas for a lengthy conversation about what we saw at the show and what that says about the state of technology. My fellow guests in this Thursday night recording session: standup comedian Chloe Radlciffe and fellow writers Garrison Davis, Robert EvansWestin Lee, and Ed Ongweso. After some post-recording banter, I went from there to the airport and fell asleep within maybe 10 minutes of takeoff.

  11. Incredible to see Craig Newmark stepping up for our digital safety! With a generous commitment of $100 million, hes focusing on fortifying US cybersecurity. Half of that funding will go towards protecting our critical infrastructure, while the other half aims to empower individuals with essential knowledge on online safeguards. This initiative not only highlights the importance of cybersecurity but also showcases how philanthropy can drive meaningful change. Let's work together to create a safer digital world! 17. If Craig Newmark really wants to make a difference, his philanthropy should be giving to all of the surviving independent newspapers, a sector he single-handedly destroyed.

The resulting media concentration and the death of local news is a major contributor to the state we find ourselves in, where we have to express relief that a man with obvious brain damage lost a Senate election by a little over one percent of the vote.
